Cozy Fall Home Tour

A cozy home is essential during the season of fall. There is no better feeling than walking through the doors of our home on a brisk autumn day to a warm, inviting, cozy space. I love the ambiance, warm textures, & spicy scents that welcome our family home. That warm, cozy fall feeling can easily be achieved in any home by creating an atmosphere that engages all five senses. The more you can “sense” coziness with each of the senses, the more at home you, your family, and your guests will be.

If this is your first time stopping by Eleanor Rose Home, welcome and thank you for being here! I’m Heidi, the creative mind behind ERH. My family and I are lucky enough to call New England home, which I think might be the prettiest place to live in fall! I love creating a cozy home for my family with new & collected décor, natural elements, textures, and of course seasonal touches.

Cozy Fall Kitchen

I love being in the kitchen the most during the fall months. After grilling and eating most of our dinners outside during the summer months, filling our home with the delicious scents of comforting, oven baked food during the cooler months makes our home feel so cozy.

Cozy Fall Kitchen

You can always find fresh baked goods in our kitchen during the fall. 3 ingredient pumpkin muffins are a cozy fall favorite of ours. What tastes and smells like fall more than pumpkin, cinnamon, and cloves?! I like to take advantage of seasonal flavors, because before you know it, the season is over and we are on to the next!

Last spring, we added a peg rail and shelf to this area of our kitchen. It has quickly turned into my favorite area in our home to style.

I recently added a few small touches of Halloween to our kitchen peg rail and shelf. We are not huge Halloween fans in our house so the Halloween décor in our home is more on the spooky side rather than scary. The spooky ghost garland was a fun DIY, and is the cutest addition to our peg rail.

These glass bon bon jars are a favorite among ERH followers! These jars are not only beautiful on our kitchen countertops, but are functional too. You can shop these bon bon jars, here.

Natural, seasonal elements are essential in our home. For spring it’s tulips & daffodils, summer it’s hydrangeas, and for fall it’s oak leaves, pumpkins, and rich fall colored flowers. This pumpkin centerpiece is the perfect natural & seasonal addition to our cozy fall kitchen décor.

For more on this gorgeous heirloom pumpkin centerpiece, check out this post!

Seasonal Fall Kitchen

As we move from the kitchen into the dining room, this side entrance to our home is another favorite area of mine to style. Over the summer, we added these adorable gold sweet home signs with hooks. The side door leads to our pool area, so this spot was perfect for hanging towels and other essentials for the pool over the summer.

With the pool now closed this door is not used much. So, I simply added a DIY oak leaf wreath (see how I made it, here) along with a cozy shawl, and a pair of rain boots for intentional, seasonal styling.

Cozy Fall Dining Room

The dining room is the latest update to our first floor. This room was actually what we called “the library”, with a long sofa in front of the fireplace. We sold the antique sofa, and moved our kitchen table into the now dining room. The dining room is still a work in progress, however we are now able to gather here as a family for dinner or family game night.

Cozy Fall Dining Room

We placed this rug in the dining room. The rug has a thick, cozy texture, a simple plaid pattern, and ties the entire room together beautifully.

The décor on our dining room table is very simple with more natural, seasonal elements that include pumpkins and oak leaves. For a more formal dining table, I recently styled this fall tablescape with the help of Birch Lane.

Fall Tablescape
Fall Tablescape

To create this informal tablescape, I started by adding a gingham tablecloth to the table. I added an olive bucket with oak leaves right from our yard to the table with a brown, satin ribbon for a whimsical, romantic touch. Then, I placed a stack of faux pumpkins with a few real small white pumpkins sprinkled throughout. Finally, I added a group of candles to complete this simple, cozy fall tablescape.

Cozy Fall Tablescape

You will notice candles in almost every room of our home. Lighting is key for the look of a cozy fall home. The warm light of a candle, fireplace, or lamp is essential in creating a cozy atmosphere in any room.

I can’t wait until it’s cool enough to have the glow of the pellet stove filling our home too!

Cozy Fall Dining Room

The antique dresser next to the pellet stove is another new addition to our downstairs. We had this glass cabinet here before, however I was craving something with a little more character & warmth. I accidentally stumbled upon this dresser on Facebook Marketplace, and it’s been love ever since!

Fall Dining Room

Demijohns are one of my favorite vintage items to utilize in our fall décor. I placed an odd number of them on top of the dresser and then filled each one with hydrangeas from our yard. The color and texture of hydrangeas as they dry out are just gorgeous, don’t you think?

To tie the dresser in with the dining room table, I added a few more of the small white pumpkins and scattered them among the demijohns.

Cozy Fall Living Room

Our cozy fall living room is where we gather the most as a family. We love to snuggle in blankets on the sofa with one of our favorite fall movies on the television. As much I love peace & quiet, there is no better sound than a movie we love on the TV with giggles coming from the kids on the sofa.

Cozy Fall Living Room

To create the coziest fall living room, I like to switch our pillow covers from the light linen fabrics of summer to cozy woven and bouclé’s for fall. Thicker textured pillows along with warm neutral colors make the sofa as well as the living room feel warmer and inviting.

Cozy Couch

Here are a few of my favorite textured fall pillows for a cozy couch; this cozy teddy faux fur pillow cover from Pottery Barn, this woven plaid pillow from Studio McGee, and this floral block print pillow from Target.

Throw Pillows

Throw blankets are another must for a cozy fall living room. We have throw blankets scattered throughout our living room so that when someone is chilly, they can easily grab a blanket, and snuggle on the couch.

Some of the cozy throw blankets I’ve been shopping for are this pom pom sherpa blanket, this striped throw, and this chunky hand knit throw. We currently have this inexpensive plush throw blanket on our couch (it’s very warm & cozy) and it happens to be Eleanor’s favorite!

Farmhouse Living Room

I’ve been intentional & purposeful with the décor in our built-in bookshelves this year (read more on what I mean by intentional décor, here). I’ve kept the styling very simple with books for reading, baskets for storage & texture, and lamps for a cozy atmosphere.

The window seats built into our bookshelves are a great place to sit and peek outside, especially on rainy or snowy days. It’s the perfect spot to sit with the lamp on and a good book in hand on a cozy autumn day!

Our Favorite Cozy Fall Movies

Here are a few of our favorite fall movies to get cozy on the couch and watch as a family. Do you have favorite fall movies you like to watch as a family?

  • Harry Potter Series
  • Planes, Trains, & Automobiles – We only discovered this movie a few years ago and laugh so hard each time we watch it!
  • Hocus Pocus
  • The Goonies
  • Hotel Transylvania
  • The Lord of the Rings Trilogy

How to Style a Dresser in the Living Room for Fall

Let me show you how to style a dresser in the living room for fall. I think you’ll find it’s easier than you think!

How to Style a Dresser in the Living Room

I think I may have won the lottery when I recently spotted this antique dresser for sale on Facebook Marketplace! I’d been on the hunt for an antique dresser like this for years, and to finally have found what I was looking for was like…the skies parting and angels singing Halleluiah.

That’s a bit dramatic but, you know what I mean! To finally find something you’ve been searching for, for so long, is exciting!

Antique Wooden Dresser

I’ve dreamed of adding an antique piece of furniture with loads of character to this exact spot. Do you remember the glass cabinet that was here previously? If not, check it out here. Although we loved the glass cabinet, it always felt a little cold and lacked the character I wanted in our living room. By removing the glass cabinet and adding the wooden dresser, I think we have added the warmth and coziness I was craving to this space.

How to Style a Dresser in the Living Room

Can you put a dresser in the living room?

I know what you must be thinking, “Can you really put a dresser in the living room?”

Dressers are typically found in the bedroom, however they absolutely can be used in any room in your house including the living room. Dresser drawers are great for storing frequently used items like board games, blankets, books, toys, electronics, etc.

Wooden Dresser

How to Style a Dresser in the Living Room

Once the antique wooden dresser was in place, my mind began to swirl with ideas on how to style a dresser in the living room for fall. Lately, I’ve been decorating our home with intention and trying (trying is the key word!) to keep the décor in our home simple, beautiful, and meaningful. I approached styling this dresser the same way.

Curious about what I mean by decorating with intention? You can read more about it in this blog post.

If you have a dresser or are thinking of adding a dresser to your living room, here area few tips to style a dresser for fall. All you need are a few pieces to create a beautiful, intentional, and meaningful space!

Living Room Décor

Hang a Mirror or Artwork on the Wall

I was lucky enough to have the mirror we hung on the wall behind the dresser in storage. I bought it years ago to place on our fireplace mantle, but unfortunately it was too tall. So, off to storage it went. Fast forward to now and I am so glad I never returned or sold this mirror! It fits perfectly in the space between the dresser and the ceiling.

Dresser in the Living Room

The wood tone of the mirror frame matches perfectly with the warm tones of the dresser. And, I love how the scallop detail at the top of the mirror mimics the scallop detail at the bottom of the dresser. It’s like they were made to be together!

This mirror is still sold at Target, you can shop it here. We actually have the smaller sister mirror in our upstairs bathroom. Can you tell how much I love the style of this mirror?!

A large piece of artwork would also look great above a dresser in the living room. Or a gallery wall would look really nice too!

Vintage Dictionary & Candles

Place an Anchor Piece on the Top of the Dresser

I talk about anchor pieces quite often when sharing how I style a shelf, table, or counter. Styling the top of a dresser is no different. By adding a larger item (the anchor) you can add smaller décor around that to create a cohesive group. The anchor piece holds everything together and helps to create balance.

For the anchor piece on the top of the dresser I added an old, vintage dictionary. Old books add warmth and character to fall décor, and are fun to read curled up on the couch on a cool autumn day. I placed the dictionary with the weathered pages facing out for extra texture & character on top of the dresser.

How to Style a Dresser With a Group of Candles

On top of the vintage dictionary, I added a group of three candles. I loved the simplicity of this grouping and the ambiance of the light reflecting off the mirror.

Group of Candles

The gold candlestick holders are simple and beautiful and were the perfect height for stacking on top of the dictionary. I added basic ivory taper candles to the candlestick holders to add a lighter color among all of the brown and tan hues.

How to Style a Dresser With Garland

I always love to have an element of the outdoors in any space I style. This faux bay leaf garland added that element here.

The faux garland on the dresser is actually a happy accident! When this garland came in the mail, I tossed it on top of the dresser to get it out of my way. As I continued to walk by the dresser with the garland haphazardly placed on top…I thought, I actually like how this looks!

Vintage Wooden Dresser

This faux bay leaf garland was very easy to work with and manipulate with it’s wire base and flexible leaves. I just kept bending and fluffing the garland on the dresser until I was able to achieve the look I wanted. Faux florals & greenery should always appear real. So, I styled the garland to look organic and natural. Free-flowing up and over the dresser.

Here are a couple other garlands I am loving for fall:

How to Style a Dresser With Ribbon

And finally the cherry on top…a satin ribbon tied in a bow!

I think I would tie a bow on anything and everything if I could. It adds the cutest, whimsical detail! Thick, brown, satin ribbon is my current favorite for fall. It adds the perfect pop of brown, and I think it could also work in Christmas décor as well (hmmm…you may be seeing this ribbon for quite a few months in our house!).

Brown Satin Ribbon

To create the prettiest, coziest bow, tie large loops in your ribbon that are floppy and leave long ribbon tails. You don’t want a bow that looks too structured & harsh. Instead, you want a bow that is flowing and blends in with the décor it’s accenting.

Finish styling your bow by folding the end of the ribbon in half (lengthwise) and cutting an upside down “V”. This creates a beautiful, finished edge to the end of the ribbon tail.

Ribbon Tied on Dresser

What looks good on a dresser in the living room?

There are so many ways to decorate the top of a dresser in the living room. Here are a few other ideas for accent pieces that would look great styled on a dresser.

  • Framed Photos
  • Decorative boxes
  • Vase With Fresh or Faux Stems
  • Potted Plants
  • Stack of Books
  • Basket or Tray With Collected Items
  • Cloche
