You may have noticed through the years that I never buy a summer wreath for our front door.

It’s not that I don’t love the look of them, because I absolutely do!

It’s just that I’ve found that with a little creativity, it’s easy to take something I already have and give it a fresh seasonal twist.

And let’s be honest…who doesn’t love saving a little money and freeing up space in the storage closet at the same time?!

This spring, I splurged on a faux geranium wreath knowing I could use it for multiple seasons, and that it would be the perfect base for simple updates throughout the year.

Instead of heading to the store for a few patriotic embellishments to create my annual summer wreath, I reached into my stash of craft supplies, and grabbed a couple of flags and spools of ribbon.

In under five minutes, I had a wreath for our front door that felt festive, thoughtful, and did not cost me a dime.

That’s the beauty of a simple DIY patriotic wreath.

It doesn’t require a lot of time, money, or effort, but it will make your home feel just a little more special for Memorial Day, 4th of July, Labor Day, or if you just love a good red, white, and blue moment.

You can watch me create this DIY summer wreath in this popular Instagram reel.

What you’ll love about this diy:

  • It’s fast and budget-friendly.
  • No glue gun required!
  • You can remove the flags after Memorial Day, Flag Day, or fourth of July and return your wreath to everyday summer decor.
  • It adds just the right touch of red, white, and blue without feeling over the top.

Supplies You’ll Need for This DIY Wreath

Here’s what you’ll need to make your own patriotic wreath…

  • Floral Wreath: Honestly, any summer (or spring) wreath will do! I used one with greenery and florals.
  • Two 8″x10″ American Flags: Use the flags that come on wooden sticks which you can find online, at most craft stores, or even the dollar store.
  • 1 1/2″ Wide Ribbon: For a little vintage charm, I used a red & white striped ribbon and a light blue ribbon but you can use any ribbon you like or have on hand.
  • Scissors: For trimming the ribbon to length.

01

Start With a Floral Base

Use the wreath you already have hanging on your door or grab a simple one with greenery and flowers.

This gives you an easy starting point without having to build the wreath from scratch.

02

Add the Flags

Gently tuck the two American flags into one side of the wreath.

I just wedged the sticks between the floral stems.

When shopping for flags, look for ones that are made in the USA. Not only are you supporting American jobs, but you’re also making sure your patriotic wreath stays true to its spirit. Many packaging labels will note the origin, so take a quick peek before you buy!

03

Tie the Ribbon

Cut a long length of both the red striped ribbon and the blue ribbon, just be sure they’re roughly the same length.

The exact length of the ribbon depends on how long you’d like the tails of your bow to drape.

Layer the two ribbons together, placing the striped ribbon on the outside of the blue so it stands out more on the wreath.

Tie the layered ribbons in a single knot around the flag sticks to hold them securely in place.

This knot is what keeps the flags attached to the wreath, so be sure to pull it nice and tight.

Once knotted, finish it off by tying a simple bow with the layered ribbons.

Adjust the loops and tails until you achieve the look you love!

Helpful Tips
  • Angle the flag sticks slightly outward instead of straight up and down for a more natural, styled look.
  • If you live in a windy area, you might want to use floral wire or hot glue to secure the flags to the wreath.
  • Trim the ribbon tails at an angle or in a dovetail (V-shape) to give your bow that professional finish.
  • Choose a wreath with light or neutral colors so the red, white, and blue accents pop without clashing.

Your FAQs Answered

Absolutely! That’s what makes this DIY so quick and budget-friendly. A neutral floral or greenery wreath works best, but you can use whatever you have on hand.

Most craft stores, dollar stores, big box retailers (Target or Walmart), and Amazon carry small flags on sticks during the summer months especially leading up to Memorial Day and the 4th of July.

Yes, if tucked in securely and tied tightly with ribbon, the flags should easily stay in place. For extra hold, you can definitely use flower wire or hot glue.

You can use any ribbon you like. I used grosgrain ribbon because I felt like it added to that vintage style, however feel free to choose whatever fits your style!

Yes, which is why I love this DIY project so much. Just untie and remove the flags and patriotic ribbons, and your base wreath is ready to be styled for late summer.

My Final Thoughts

All you need is a little ribbon and a couple of flags to give a simple wreath a whole new purpose.

This quick DIY adds charm and color to your home for summer without any stress or glue guns.

I hope this wreath idea inspires you to take something you already have and give it a fresh new look for the season!
