I have to say, some of my best DIY and home decor ideas come to me when I’m not even trying.

You know those random moments when you’re supposed to be doing something else but then suddenly you’re rearranging a shelf or reaching for the hot glue gun?

Maybe that’s just me…

But anyways, this was one of those spur-of-the-moment, I feel like crafting on a Saturday morning kind of projects.

Making a fall candle ring wasn’t on my to-do list.

Not even on my radar.

However, I had picked up a bunch of fresh olive branches at Trader Joe’s earlier in the week, and instead of popping them in a vase like I normally would, I felt like trying something different.

A little more creative.

I remembered I had a few grapevine wreaths and small white pumpkins tucked away in a closet from last fall, along with a bag of whole nuts in the pantry that I never used for who-knows-what last Christmas.

In a nutshell, that’s how simply this DIY came together.

What I love about this fall candle ring is how incredibly easy it is to make and how effortlessly beautiful it looks.

And quite honestly, those are my favorite kinds of DIYs.

If you’re like me and you’ve got the itch to get a little crafty lately, here’s how you can make your own cozy candle ring in just a few simple steps.

Why You’ll Love This DIY

  • AFFORDABLE: Most of these items you might already have at home or can gather from your own backyard.
  • CUSTOMIZABLE: If you don’t have (or can’t find) real olive branches you can try eucalyptus, bittersweet, or faux stems.
  • QUICK & EASY: You can complete this fall DIY project in less than 30 minutes and you don’t need any special crafting skills.

Supplies You’ll Need to Make a DIY Candle Ring

Here’s the materials you’ll want to collect to create your own DIY fall candle wreath…

The materials you'll need to make this DIY candle ring include a grapevine wreath, small white pumpkin, olive branches, and whole nuts in their shell.
  • 10″ Grapevine Wreath: The base for your candle ring.
  • One Bunch Real Olive Branches: You can use fresh or dried.
  • Floral Wire: To secure the olive branches to the wreath. I had green on hand, but brown would work best.
  • One Small Faux Pumpkin or Gourd: A real pumpkin can be used if they’re in season.
  • Whole Nuts in Their Shell: Walnuts, acorns, almonds, hazelnuts…use a mix for texture. If you don’t have nuts in a shell, pinecones could be used instead.
  • Hot Glue Gun: To keep the pumpkin and nuts in place.
  • Pillar Candle: Or a flameless candle if you’re putting this in a spot where you don’t want an open flame.

Step One: Start With the Grapevine Wreath

Place your grapevine wreath on a flat surface and gently fluff or adjust any branches that seem too tight or uneven. The rustic, imperfect shape gives this project its charm, so don’t overthink it.

Step Two: Attach the Olive Branches

Take the bunch of real olive branches and begin layering them around the wreath. Position all of the stems in a clockwise or counter-clockwise direction for a natural flow. Use florist wire to secure the stems to the grapevine base, wrapping it around both the branch and wreath to keep them in place.

Step Three: Add the Faux Pumpkin

Nestle the small faux pumpkin (or gourd) into the olive branches, slightly off-center for an organic, asymmetrical look. Use hot glue to keep it secure.

Step Four: Tuck in the Walnuts, Acorns, & Almonds

Hot glue a few whole nuts (like walnuts, acorns, and almonds) on either side of the pumpkin. I also added a small cluster of nuts on the other side of the DIY wreath.

Step Five: Finish With a Candle

Place a pillar candle in the center of your ring, and your fall decoration is ready to be displayed!

Helpful Tips

  • Swap olive branches for eucalyptus stems, faux fall leaves, dried florals, or clippings from your own backyard. Just stick with bendable stems that are easy to shape around the wreath.
  • If you want your candle ring to last for years, I suggest using faux stems instead of real ones.
  • I love the neutral colors of this candle ring, but if you want a pop of color you could add seasonal berries, small faux florals, or mini orange pumpkins.
  • Use pine cones in place of the nuts (or in addition to them for more texture).
  • A 10″ grapevine wreath works well for most candles, but you can size up or down depending on the look you’re going for or where you’ll be displaying it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use faux stems instead of real olive branches?
Absolutely. Faux stems can be used and will hold up longer if you want to reuse your candle ring year after year.

Will real olive branches dry out?
Yes, over time they will dry out however, I love the look of the dried olive leaves just as much as fresh!

Can I use a different type of wreath base?
A grapevine wreath is great for tucking in stems, but straw, wire, or foam wreath bases would work too. Keep in mind that you may need more flower wire or hot glue to hold things in place.

Is this DIY candle ring safe to use with a real candle?
If you plan to light a real candle in the center, make sure there’s plenty of space between the flame and any decorative elements.

How long does this DIY take to make?
Less than 30 minutes, I promise!
