Hi.

My name’s Heidi, and I’m a stencil-aholic.

Just kidding…well, kind of.

I shared a blog post a couple of days ago on how to stencil tea towels, and that pretty much sealed my fate.

Once I remembered how easy stenciling is (and how satisfying it is to peel that stencil back and see a crisp design underneath), I started looking around our house wondering what else I could stencil.

That’s when plain flower pots caught my eye.

There’s something about a flower pot that feels full of potential.

They’re simple.

Classic.

But they can also be, a tad bit boring.

Stenciling adds the perfect little detail that can make something (like a flower pot) feel collected and personal.

What I love about this craft is that it takes less than 10 minutes, requires minimal supplies, and instantly makes a shelf, porch, or kitchen windowsill feel special.

If you’ve been wanting an easy spring project that feels creative but not complicated, this one’s for you!

Why You’ll Love This Stenciled Flower Pot DIY

  • They’re beginner-friendly (no artistic talent required).
  • Inexpensive using pots, paint, and stencils you might already have on hand.
  • Completely customizable.
  • A great way to decorate for spring and summer.
  • It’s a nostalgic craft that feels fresh.

Supplies You’ll Need to Customize Flower Pots With a Stencil

Here’s everything you’ll need to make your own stenciled flower pots…

The supplies you'll need to make custom flower pots include stencils, craft paint, and flower pots.
  • Flower Pots: Plain, unsealed pots work best because they absorb paint nicely and give that classic, natural look. Terracotta pots would be perfect for this.
  • Floral Stencil (or Simple Pattern): I recommend choosing a smaller scale design so it doesn’t overwhelm the size of the pot.
  • Acrylic Craft Paint: Soft neutrals, muted greens, or dusty blues keep the look cozy and cottage inspired.
  • Stencil Brush: These help you apply paint with a dabbing motion for clean, even coverage.
  • Painter’s Tape: If the back of your stencil isn’t sticky like mine, masking tape will help to secure the stencil tightly to the pot.
  • Paper Plate: For removing excess paint from the paintbrush.
  • Optional – Clear Matte Sealer Spray: Especially helpful if you plant to use your pots outdoors.

What’s the difference between stenciling and painting?

Painting is done freehand so you create the design yourself with a brush. Stenciling uses a pre-cut template and a light dabbing motion to apply paint over the openings, creating clean, consistent shapes. It’s perfect for beginners because it gives you a polished look while still feeling handmade.

Step One: Make sure your pot is clean and completely dry. Then, decide where you want your design. You can center it on one side or repeat it around the pot.

Step Two: Dip your stencil brush lightly into the paint, then dab most of it off onto a paper plate. You want very little paint on your brush to prevent bleeding. Attach the stencil to the pot.

Using a paintbrush, dab the acrylic paint onto the flower pot to apply the stencil.

Step Three: Gently tap the paint onto the stencil using an up-and-down motion. Don’t swirl or drag. Just soft tapping with the paintbrush.

Remove stencil from the flower pot to reveal the stenciled design.

Step Four: This is the most satisfying part! Peel it back slowly while the paint is still slightly wet. If you’re adding a real plant or sealing it for outdoor use, let the paint dry completely before doing so.

Helpful Tips

  • Use less paint than you think you need. Too much paint is the number one cause of bleeding under the stencil.
  • Test your design first. Practice on scrap paper to get a feel for pressure and paint coverage.
  • Secure the stencil. Use painter’s tape to keep everything firmly in place so it doesn’t shift while you’re painting.
  • Lift the stencil straight up. Avoid dragging it to prevent smudging.
  • Don’t stress about tiny imperfections. Slight variations will make your flower pot feel handmade instead of factory produced.
  • Seal for outdoor use. If your pots will live on a porch or patio, finish with a matte sealer to protect the design from moisture.

One of the best things about stenciling your own flower pots is that you can customize them however you want.

If you’re not sure what direction to go, here are a few ideas:

  • Botanical border around the top or bottom rim.
  • A single floral motif centered on the front.
  • Repeating pattern all the way around.

COZY TIP: Keep the scale of the stencil proportional to the size of your pot. I feel that smaller designs feel more intentional and less overwhelming.

Stenciling Flower Pots Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best paint to use for stenciling flower pots?
Acrylic craft paint is perfect for this project. It’s affordable, easy to find, and dries quickly. If you plan on putting your pots outdoors, you might want to consider sealing them afterward for extra protection.

How do I keep the paint from bleeding under the stencil?
The key is using very little paint and applying it with a light dabbing motion. Always remove most of the paint onto a paper plate first. Too much paint is the main reason stencils bleed.

Can I use this technique on plastic, ceramic, or metal pots? What about glass vases?
Yes. This technique works on plastic, ceramic, and metal pots as well as glass vases. See photo below!

How long does acrylic paint take to dry?
Most acrylic paint dries to the touch within 15–20 minutes. However, allow it to fully cure for several hours before sealing or adding a plant.

Can I wash the pots after they’re painted?
Absolutely. I would just avoid soaking or scrubbing aggressively because that can remove the paint.
