When I was planning the holiday decorations for our kitchen this year, I knew I wanted to keep things simple but meaningful.

As I was going through one of our closets looking for who knows what, I stumbled on a few frames that I purchased years ago but never used.

Upon seeing those frames I completely forgot about, I thought…What if I could turn them into something special for the holidays?

That’s when I remembered the holiday recipes magazine by Joanna Gaines that I had recently picked up.

The pages were filled with delicious, comforting recipes radiating cozy holiday charm.

And just like that, the lightbulb went off.

I could frame a few of those recipes and turn them into nostalgic decor that would warm up our kitchen for the season!

It was the perfect way to blend simplicity with sentiment, creating something that not only celebrates the joy (and deliciousness) of the holidays, but can also stay relevant all year long.

So in this post, I’m excited to share how you can easily do the same in your own home, using recipes from a magazine or recipe cards that might have sentimental value to you!

Framed Recipes for Kitchen Art

I like to think of recipes as more than just instructions. They can be a window into your family history and traditions.

Framing recipes gives them the spotlight they deserve, transforming them into a piece of wall art that tells a story whether you’re framing recipes passed down from loved ones or ones that inspire your creativity.

While these framed recipes feel extra special during the holidays, they can be perfect in your home decor all year long.

I love the idea of switching the recipes seasonally.

You could frame a pumpkin recipe for fall, a hearty stew for winter, a fresh salad for spring, or a peach pie for summer.

The possibilities are endless!

Framing Recipes Supplies

These are the materials I used to create our framed recipes…

  • Gold Picture Frames: The metallic finish adds a timeless elegance, perfect for any kitchen decor. If you don’t have gold frames, don’t worry! Just use what you already have on hand or you can paint them gold if desired.
  • Mat Board: These create a clean, classic backdrop that enhances the beauty of the recipes.
  • Pencil: Use this to trace out the recipe you’re putting into the frame.
  • Scissors: You’ll need these if you’re cutting out the recipe from a magazine or cookbook.
  • Tape: Helps secure the recipe to the mat board.
  • Recipe: I stumbled on recipes in a holiday magazine, however you could also use a handwritten recipe on a recipe card, or a page from a cookbook.

How to Make DIY Framed Recipes

Follow these step by step instructions, and you’ll have nostalgic kitchen decor for the holidays or anytime of the year in mere minutes…

One. Gather Your Recipes

Decide on the recipes you’d like to frame.

If I had handwritten recipes handed down to me from my mom or my grandmothers, I would have used those in the frames.

However, I think these printed recipes from Magnolia Table worked just fine.

Use magazines or cookbooks to find recipes to frame in the kitchen.

Two. Choose Your Frames & Mats

I chose to use floating frames because I already had them tucked away in storage.

To give the recipes a more polished and elevated look, I added cream mats, which create a clean backdrop and help the recipes stand out a little bit more.

Three. Prepare the Recipes

To ensure the recipes fit perfectly, I used the 5″x7″ placeholder photo that came with the floating frame as a template. This made it easy to cut the recipes from the magazine to the exact size needed to fit within the mat opening.

Using scotch tape, I secured the back side of the recipe to the back of the cream mat.

I eyeballed the placement to make sure the recipe was centered on the mat, but you could use a ruler or tape measure to find the exact center of the mat before taping down your recipe.

pro Tip
  • If you’re worried about scotch tape damaging your recipe over time, choose acid-free tape. It’s safe for delicate papers and will help preserve your recipe’s condition for years to come.

Four. Assemble the Frames & Hang Kitchen Artwork

Place the matted recipes into the frames, making sure that the recipe looks centered and even within the mat & frame.

Secure the frame backing, and your framed recipes are ready for hanging or displaying!

Tips

  • Don’t feel limited to a specific type of frame. This diy is a great way to use any frames you already own or might have in storage.
  • Magazine clippings are perfect for this project, but you can also use pages from an old cookbook, handwritten recipe cards, or even photocopies of family recipes.
  • Framed recipes make thoughtful Christmas gifts. Frame a handwritten recipe from a loved one or a dish that has special meaning to your family.

Displaying Framed Recipes

Once your framed recipes are ready, the fun begins—deciding where and how to display them!

Kitchen Wall Decor

The first and most obvious choice is to hang your framed recipes on your kitchen walls.

You can create a charming gallery wall by grouping them together or find a special spot, like above a countertop or near a pantry, to make a single framed recipe the star of your cooking space.

Open Shelves

To make the framed recipes the focal point in our kitchen, I hung them on the wall above our open kitchen shelves.

Displaying them here draws the eye upward and creates a curated look that blends practicality with decor.

You could also lean framed recipes directly on the shelves themselves.

Note: For a festive holiday touch, I added delicate bows to our framed recipes using 1/4″ satin ribbon (shop ribbon here). It’s a simple addition that instantly elevates the frames with a little bit of charm!

Countertop Display

Prop a framed recipe on your countertop or kitchen island, especially if it’s one you plan to cook often.

It adds charm to the heart of the home and serves as a functional piece of decor!
