On our recent trip to Pella, Iowa, Mr. ERH and I stayed at the CUTEST and COZIEST Airbnb.
We honestly haven’t stayed in many Airbnbs, but this one made us feel right at home the second we walked through the door.
It had that perfect balance of feeling relaxed, welcoming, and lived-in all at the same time.
The week we were there, we had summer temperatures and I found myself noticing how the living room in particular felt extra toasty even with the a/c on.
Why?
Because the living room still had a lot of the heavier elements we gravitate toward during the colder months.
Thick knit blankets and pillows, darker textures, heavier fabrics…all things that make a space feel cozy during fall and winter, but in the middle of summer, can make a room feel warmer than it actually is.
Now, the tricky thing about summer decorating is that sometimes when you try to make a room feel lighter, you accidentally remove all of the personality and warmth from it too.
Suddenly the room feels cold and empty.
But staying in our Airbnb on Franklin Street really got me thinking about how there’s a middle ground.
(Nope, my decorating brain never shuts off!)
Your home can still feel cozy in the summer months without feeling visually heavy.
You can still have softness, texture, warmth, personality, layered decor, and all those little cozy touches we love, just in a lighter, more relaxed way that fits the season better.
By the end of our trip I started making a mental list of all the simple ways you can make a living room feel cozy for summer without it feeling hot, cluttered, and weighed down.
Here it is…
What Makes a Living Room Feel Cozy in the Summer Months

Cozy during summer looks a little different than cozy in fall and winter.
In the colder months, we lean into heavier textures, darker colors, layered blankets, candles, and all the visual warmth that helps a home feel comforting during cold weather.
But summer coziness is softer.
Lighter fabrics, natural lighting, a fan humming in the background (my personal favorite), or fresh flowers on the coffee table.
And I think this is where people get stuck with summer decorating.
They assume cozy and airy can’t exist together.
But they absolutely can.
A cozy summer living room isn’t about stripping your home of personality for the sake of minimalism.
It’s about creating balance.
Keeping the warmth and comfort while allowing the room to breathe a little more for the season.
What to do Before You Start Decorating Your Living Room for Summer
Before you begin swapping decor or convincing yourself you need an entirely different living room because someone on Instagram styled their house like a coastal resort…
Take a breath.
One of the biggest mistakes when it comes to decorating for summer is removing everything cozy in an attempt to make it feel lighter for the season.
The goal isn’t to make your living room feel empty, cold, or sterile.
The goal is to make it feel relaxed.
There’s a difference.
Before decorating, I always think it helps to first take a look around your living room and ask yourself a few simple questions:
- Does the room look “heavy”?
- Are there too many dark or bulky textures?
- Does the space feel cluttered?
- Is there enough breathing room between decor?
- Does the room feel bright and airy during the daytime?
- What “summery” elements are already in the room that I can work with?
Making your living room feel cozy for summer has less to do with buying new things and more to do with editing, rearranging, and lightening up what you already have.
Rearrange Before You Replace
Don’t overlook the power of moving things around your home. Sometimes a lamp from another room, a different pillow combination, or moving a chair to a new corner can make your living room feel completely refreshed.

One. Swap Heavy Textiles for Lighter Layers

If there’s one change that will make the biggest difference in your living room this summer, it’s swapping out your textiles.
Heavy blankets and chunky knit throw pillows are wonderful in January, but they can make a room feel stuffy and heavy once the warm weather rolls in.
The good news is that a textile swap is one of the easiest and most affordable ways to refresh your space.
Look for throws in linen, cotton, or a lightweight woven fabric.
You want something that still looks cozy draped over the arm of a sofa but won’t make you sweat just looking at it.
For throw pillows, choose lighter fabrics and softer patterns.
Gingham, simple stripes, and florals all feel fresh and summery without trying too hard.
Remember, you don’t need to replace everything.
Just swapping out two or three pillow covers and draping a lighter blanket over your sofa can make your whole living room feel completely different.
Living Room Textiles to Swap
- Throw Blankets: Replace chunky knits and heavy fleece throws with lightweight cotton, linen, or woven blankets.
- Pillow Covers: Swap darker winter fabrics for softer patterns like gingham, florals, or stripes.
- Curtains: Trade heavy curtains for airy linen or cotton panels that let more natural light into the room.
- Area Rugs: Consider lighter colors or natural woven rugs like jute or sisal to visually lighten the space.
- Slipcovers: If you use them, lighter slipcovers can completely refresh the look and feel of your living room.
Two. Show Off Your Quilt Collection

If you have a quilt collection tucked away in a closet somewhere, or even just one or two quilts you love, summer is the perfect time to bring them out.
Quilts have a unique way of making a family room feel cozy and collected, especially during the summer months when lighter bedding and fabrics take center stage.
Not to mention quilts are huge right now in home decor, and I don’t see them going anywhere anytime soon.
Whether they’re vintage, handmade, thrifted, or passed down through family, quilts add texture, color, and character to a room without making it feel visually heavy.
A few ways to decorate with quilts in your living room:
- Drape one over the arm of a sofa.
- Fold inside a basket.
- Layer over the back of a chair.
- Hang on a wall with quilt hooks.
- Display a folded stack of quilts on a bench or ottoman.
Three. Decorate With Summer Greenery

Nothing makes a living room feel fresh and cozy like greenery.
A few stems in a vase, a potted plant on a side table, or greenery tucked onto a shelf is an easy way to change the mood of a room.
During the summer, I personally gravitate to greenery and florals that are more relaxed and cottage inspired rather than anything too perfectly styled or overly tropical.
Some of my favorite summer greenery to decorate with:
- Chamomile
- Faux Blueberry Stems
- Olive Branches
- Ferns
- Potted Herbs
- Geraniums
- Hydrangeas
Four. Use Softer Lighting

During the summer months, I like to keep our home feeling bright and airy during the daytime by opening curtains and letting in natural light (not necessarily direct blazing afternoon sun that turns our living room into a sauna).
Light filtered through linen curtains or roman shades creates a soft glow and makes a room feel calm and relaxed.
Once the sun starts going down, skip the harsh overhead lighting whenever possible.
Nothing kills a cozy atmosphere faster than one giant ceiling light blazing down on everyone like you’re sitting in a doctor’s office waiting room.
Know what I mean?
Instead, turn on lamps throughout the room to create softer pockets of light.
For some reason, a lamp glowing in the corner of a living room on a summer evening is incredibly comforting and nostalgic for me.
The moral of the story…lighting changes everything.
Even simple decor can feel warm and inviting with soft lighting, while the prettiest room in the world can feel cold under harsh overhead lights.
The Coziest Lightbulb
Contrary to popular belief, not all lightbulbs are created equal. These are the only lightbulbs we use in our home because they give off a true, warm white glow.
Five. Add Natural Textures

Summer is the perfect season to pull things out like wicker baskets, rattan trays, linen curtains, wood accents, and ceramic pieces.
Natural materials are the secret sauce to making a room feel warm, relaxed, and lived in without having to try too hard.
Put plainly, texture is what keeps a summer living room from feeling flat.
When you start removing heavier winter blankets, darker decor, and thicker fabrics, natural textures help fill that gap while still keeping the room feeling light and airy.
Even something as simple as a woven basket beside the couch or a rattan tray on a coffee table adds warmth and character to a space.

Six. Use Cozy Summer Scents

Scent has the ability to completely change the feeling of any room in any home.
Summer coziness smells different than fall coziness though.
Personally, I gravitate toward scents like fresh cut grass, laundry drying on the clothesline, tomato vine, chamomile, and fresh cut herbs this time of year.
But the interesting thing about scent is that it’s incredibly personal.
What smells cozy and comforting to me might be completely different for you, and that’s actually what makes a home feel unique.
Maybe summer coziness reminds you of sunscreen, lavender, salty air, citrus, coconut, or flowers from the garden.
Seven. Style Your Coffee Table and Side Tables With Fewer Pieces
We don’t have a coffee table in our living room (I sure wish we did), but whether you’re decorating a coffee table, side tables, an ottoman, or a console table, summer is a great time to simplify your surfaces.
Instead of filling every surface with decorations, try scaling things back a little and focusing on a few meaningful pieces you really love.
Some ideas for you:
- Stack of Books
- Candle
- Vase of Greenery or Flowers
- Framed Family Photo
- Decorative Bowl
- Woven Tray
- Coasters
- Small Lamp
- Pottery or Ceramic Pieces
- Bowl of Fruit, Seashells, Sea Glass, or Buttons
Eight. Bring in Vintage Inspired Colors

One thing I love about summer decorating is that you need to completely change your home’s color scheme to make it feel seasonal.
During the summer months, I find myself gravitating toward colors that feel nostalgic like:
- Butter Yellow
- Faded Blue
- Soft Green
- Warm White
- Red
- Natural Wood Tones
There’s something about these softer vintage inspired colors that feels cozy without the heaviness.
That’s probably why I avoid super bright or overly trendy summer color palettes in our home.
I still want our living room to feel calm, warm, and relaxing…just a little lighter for summer.
Nine. Let Your Windows Feel Open and Airy

Windows are one of the biggest features in most living rooms, and how you dress them can have a huge impact on how the entire space feels.
During the summer months, I like to keep things feeling as open and airy as possible.
That doesn’t mean removing all of your window treatments, but swapping heavier curtains for lighter panels or simply opening them more often during the day (when the weather allows).
Sometimes we focus so much on decorating shelves, coffee tables, and sofas that we forget how much of an impact our windows have on a room.
A bright, airy window can make an entire living room feel fresh and welcoming without changing anything else.
Ten. Incorporate Pieces That Tell a Story

Fill your home with pieces that actually mean something to you and your family.
- A vintage frame you found while thrifting.
- A lamp you almost walked away from but still think about years later.
- Books you genuinely read instead of just stacking for decoration.
- A handmade quilt.
- Family photographs.
- Pottery picked up from a small local shop.
- Something old that was passed down through generations.
Those are the kinds of things that give a home personality not perfection, trends, or buying all new decorations every season.
It’s the collected layers that tell the story of your home and the people living inside it.

Eleven. Add a Basket for Summer Essentials

I don’t think you can ever have too many baskets.
During the summer months, I like to keep a basket beside a sofa or chair filled with things we actually use (i.e. blankets, magazines, quilts).
That’s one of the reasons baskets feel so cozy, they’re decorative but functional too.
Twelve. Decorate With Seasonal Artwork
Swapping your art seasonally is affordable, takes a few minutes, and can completely change the look of a room without having to move furniture or buy a bunch of new decor.
During the summer months, I like to look for artwork that feels light, relaxed, and a little nostalgic.
Pieces with landscapes, botanicals, Americana prints, or simple floral paintings.
And don’t feel like you need to replace every piece of artwork in your living room either.
Changing just one frame on a shelf, mantel, or gallery wall is enough to make a room feel seasonal.

Thirteen. Mix Patterns for a Collected Look

I know it might seem scary to mix patterns in your living room, but I promise it’s much easier than you think.
The key is not treating every pattern like it has to match perfectly.
Summer Pattern Combinations to Try
- Gingham + Florals
- Stripes + Florals
- Block Prints + Gingham
- Plaids + Ticking Stripes
- Gingham + Botanical Prints
One trick that makes pattern mixing feel less intimidating is sticking to a similar color scheme.
When the colors relate to one another, the patterns work together naturally.
Fourteen. Add a Touch of Americana

Summer decorating naturally lends itself to Americana style.
And before you start picturing rooms covered in flags and 4th of July decorations, that’s not necessarily what I’m talking about.
To me, Americana decorating is more about creating a feeling than following a theme.
It’s faded blues, reds, warm whites, natural wood tones, vintage artwork, quilts, baskets, and pieces that feel collected through the years.
What I love most is that many of these pieces can stay out all summer long.
They don’t scream holiday decor, but they still bring a warm, nostalgic feeling to a space.
Fifteen. Focus on How You Want Your Living Room to Feel

Last but probably most importantly, focus on how you want your family room to feel.
It’s easy to get caught up in decorating trends, what everyone else is doing on social media, or feeling like you need to buy something new every season to keep your home looking current.
But before you decorate any room, try to think about the feeling you want to create.
For our home, I want our living room to feel warm, welcoming, comfortable, and like a place people actually want to spend time.
At the end of the day, creating a cozy summer living room isn’t about the accessories.
Yes those things help, but they’re not what people remember.
People remember how a room made them feel.
So as you decorate for summer, don’t worry about making your living room look perfect.
Instead, focus on creating a space that feels cozy, relaxed, and welcoming.

Decorating a Living Room for Summer Frequently Asked Questions
Can a living room feel cozy in the summer?
Absolutely. Summer coziness just looks a little different than fall and winter cozy. Instead of heavy blankets and dark colors, think lighter textiles, softer color palettes, lamps, and natural elements like florals and woven textures. The goal is a space that feels relaxed, comfortable, and inviting no matter what season it is.
What colors make a living room feel cozy in summer?
Blues, creamy whites, warm taupes, sage greens, and pops of red all work well in a cozy summer living room. These shades feel fresh and light without making the room feel cold or stark. Layer in natural textures alongside your color scheme for the best effect.
How do I make my living room feel cozy without spending a lot of money?
The most budget-friendly approach is to work with what you already have. Swap out heavy throw pillow covers for lighter ones, rearrange your furniture to create a new layout, bring in a few fresh stems from outdoors, and lean on your lamps instead of overhead lighting. Small changes add up quickly.
What textiles work best for a cozy summer living room?
Linen, cotton, and lightweight woven fabrics are your best friends in summer. Look for linen throw blankets, cotton pillow covers, and woven baskets. All of these add texture and warmth without feeling heavy or visually stuffy.
