Winter Home Décor to Brighten Your Day
Winter home décor ideas to brighten your day that are colorful, fresh, cozy, and perfect for fighting the seasonal winter blues.

Typically during the winter months here in the Northeast we are dealing with snow. Sometimes it’s a lot of snow, sometimes it’s a little snow. This winter…no snow. It’s been cloudy, rainy and just plain dark and dreary.
While I do not technically suffer from the winter blues, I do find that my mood has been affected lately by the lack of sunlight and small doses of vitamin D. So, the other day I decided to take matters into my own hands. If the sun won’t shine, I decided to create some of my own! Styling areas of our home always makes me happy, so I decided to do something I love and add a few pieces into our winter home décor that adds brightness, freshness…and puts a smile on my face & warmth in my heart.
If you’re feeling a touch of the winter blues or just need a little mid-winter pick me up, try the tips in this blog post. They work! Customize them to make them your own and to fit your home’s design style. Utilize pieces that are special and meaningful to you, to create your own rays of sunshine on the dreariest of winter days.

Add a Pop of Color to Winter Home Décor
Neutral is always a part of our home’s aesthetic. I love a neutral color palette all year long. However, sometimes it’s nice to add a little pop of color to brighten our home and our spirits.
These purple rain boots do just that. Not only do they serve as functional décor (rain boots are essential for all of these rainy days), they also add just a small touch of color to our neutral, winter home décor. The lavender color of these boots makes me smile and reminds me that warm, sunny spring days are not that far away.

The pop of color you add to your home’s décor is entirely up to you. Use a color that feels happy and uplifting to you. It doesn’t matter if the color is red, brown, orange, or yellow. As long as that color makes you happy, that is all that matters.
Bring Fresh Flowers Into Winter Home Décor
I have to admit, it had been a while since I’ve purchased fresh flowers to display in our home. I think it’s mainly because our Trader Joe’s has not had the best selection of flowers lately. Every time I’ve shopped the florals, I’ve felt uninspired.
Since it I had not purchased fresh flowers in quite some time, I decided to create a floral centerpiece for a recent blog post (you can read the soup tureen centerpiece blog post here). With a color palette in mind, I was able to shop the limited selection of flowers at TJ’s and select fresh flowers for an arrangement.

Creating the arrangement was therapeutic. It felt good to work with something I love, get my hands dirty, and create a centerpiece to display in our home.
Now, you don’t have to create an elaborate centerpiece to enjoy fresh flowers in your home. Simply grab a bouquet of your favorite flowers (or any bouquet of flowers you think are pretty) from the local grocery store and place them in a pretty vase. It’s that easy!
Fresh flowers are a wonderful element to add to winter home décor. It is scientifically proven that the flowers can boost moods, reduce feelings of depression, and create a sense of well-being & happiness. Which makes flowers an excellent way to beat the winter blues!

Fresh Fruit in Winter Home Décor
Fresh fruit is a great decorating resource any time of the year. I always love to decorate our home with natural elements, which includes fresh fruit.
The fruit I use in our home décor changes seasonally. I like to use citrus fruits in the spring, peaches in the summer, apples in the fall, and oranges & cranberries during the holidays. Why decorate with fresh fruit? It’s another way to incorporate freshness into your décor, adds a pop of color, is widely available at the grocery store, fairly inexpensive, and it’s a decoration you can snack on (for the most part!).

Instead of stashing your fruit in the refrigerator the next time you grocery shop. Try adding a bowl of fresh fruit to your counter, incorporating it into a centerpiece or tablescape, or displaying them in a vase on shelf.
Hang a Green Leaf Wreath
A really great and easy way to change your home décor seasonally is by changing the wreaths you have on display. Just a simple addition of a seasonal wreath can change the look and feel of a space. Sometimes it is the smallest changes we make in our homes that have the greatest impact!

I added this green leaf wreath to this entrance of our home to add a little color and brightness. The green leaves pop against the white beadboard giving me early spring vibes!
For a little charm and texture, I tied a natural & white striped ribbon to the wreath. I tied the ribbon my favorite way…long and floppy! I don’t like our home to feel harsh or stiff, and so tying the bow this way adds a softness I just love.

Use Décor That Brings a Smile to Your Face
The biggest take away from the blog post…always decorate with pieces that make you happy and brings a smile to your face. Something you treasure may have little meaning to anyone else, but because it’s meaningful to you, makes it ideal decor for your home.
Decorating your home this way will create a happy, warm, cozy aesthetic. Your house will become a place you can’t wait to come home to at the end of the day. It will help you survive the long days of winter and fend off the winter blues.
Think about which pieces make you happy and find ways to incorporate them into your winter home décor.
Other Ways to Brighten Winter Days
Here are a few other simple ideas to your brighten your day and bring warmth and comfort to your home & life.
- Transform a corner of your home into a mini-retreat. Place your favorite reading materials, a Bluetooth speaker, cozy blanket, and a decorative lamp on a side table. Settle in with your favorite pillow.
- Teach yourself a cozy craft; like knitting, crochet, or embroidery.
- Love the smell of fresh bread with no time to bake? Buy a loaf of bread from the bakery, slice it, top with olive oil & spices, wrap in foil, and warm in the oven.
- Light candles.
- Wear a scarf around the house on a chilly day. Drape it around your neck and enjoy its warmth even while you’re inside.
- Place an old quilt on the floor and enjoy an indoor picnic.
- Watch your favorite movie.
- Surround yourself with fragrances you love. Choose dish soups, hand soups, cleaners, and essential oils that will fill your home with beautiful scents.
- Hang twinkle lights.

Hi Rose, I am so glad you found me & Eleanor Rose Home! I don’t believe those are available any longer. I found them at Target last summer. Sorry!

Hi Bunny, I am sorry that is happening. I have it set up so that subscribers do not get pop ups. I will look into the settings to make sure that is the case. I apologize for the inconvenience!
Not happy that a declutter download printables pop up registration is required before a subscriber (me) can get past in order to read the current day’s blog post.
