I don’t think I’ve ever said this out loud before but…

There are 4 things that I shop for WAY TOO MUCH.

And those things are, drumroll please…

Throw pillow covers, lamps, artwork, and accent rugs.

For some reason they just tickle my fancy.

I think because they’re the kinds of pieces that can change the feeling of a room without requiring much effort.

No painting.

No furniture rearranging.

Just simple swaps that add warmth but don’t include a full body workout.

My fav!!!

In this post, we’re going to focus on the 4th item I like to shop for…accent rugs.

They’re cozy, practical, and incredibly versatile.

You can move them from room to room, layer them, swap them out seasonally, or use them to warm up those spots in your home that can feel a little cold.

And since January is such a good time to refresh your home without going overboard, I rounded up a collection of affordable cozy accent rugs from Walmart that I’m loving right now.

Every single one is under $50 and will work beautifully in almost any room of your home.

Why Accent Rugs are Great for Cozy Homes:

  • They instantly warm up cold floors (your feet will thank you).
  • They add texture and softness where ever you place them.
  • They help define small areas.
  • They’re easy to swap seasonally.
  • And most importantly…they make a room feel finished.

What is an accent rug?

Let’s start this post by answering this basic rug question…

A throw rug is a smaller rug that you can use to add warmth, texture, and visual interest to a room without covering the entire floor like a large area rug would.

Think of it as a cozy layer that can help a room feel complete.

Accent rugs are usually placed in specific spots like beside a bed, in front of the kitchen sink, or near an entryway.

They’re not meant to anchor furniture or define the whole room.

Instead, they highlight a spot and add just an extra bit of comfort under your feet.

Because they’re smaller and more affordable, scatter rugs are also an easy way to refresh your home seasonally.

If you’re wondering whether a rug counts as an accent rug, here’s a quick way to tell:

  • Smaller in size (often 2×3, 3×5, or runners).
  • Placed to highlight a specific spot or function.
  • Easy to move, layer, or swap out seasonally.
  • Focused more on cozy detail than anchoring furniture.

Rooms Where You Can Use Accent Rugs

  • Entryways
  • Kitchens (In front of the sink or stove.)
  • Bathrooms
  • Bedrooms (Beside or at the foot of the bed.)
  • Living Rooms (Layered or placed near chairs.)
  • Laundry Rooms or Mudrooms

Accent Rug vs. Area Rug: What’s the difference?

Budget-friendly accent rugs for your home from Walmart under $50.

An area rug is larger and meant to anchor furniture and define a room.

In the living room, it usually sits under the sofa and chairs.

In a bedroom, it lives under the bed.

Area rugs are the foundation of a space and help everything feel grounded and pulled together.

An accent rug, on the other hand, is smaller and more flexible.

They are great for layering, highlighting a specific spot, or softening hard floors.

I like to think of it this way, if an area rug is the foundation of a room, a throw rug is the cozy cherry on top.

What to Look for When Shopping for Accent Rugs

When it comes to throw rugs, shop for ones that feel cozy, works with your home, and fits your lifestyle.

Since these rugs are smaller and easier to swap out more often, you can have a little fun without overthinking it.

I always like to keep these things in mind when shopping for accent rugs:

Size Matters

Accent rugs are meant to fit a spot, not a whole room. Think about where the rug will live and how much floor space you want it to cover.

Texture Over Trend

For a cozy home, texture is everything. Look for rugs that feel soft or add visual interest through weaving or low pile patterns.

Easy Care Is Key

Life happens as I’m sure you know…spills, muddy shoes, pets, kids, etc. Choosing accent rugs that are easy to clean, low pile, or even washable makes a big difference.

I’ll show you that your home can become a place of warmth, comfort, and style with practical tips, creative ideas, and my own journey to help you create a space that feels like you…welcoming, personal, and full of charm.

Consider the Room

Where the rug will be used matters. A kitchen or entryway rug should be durable and easy to clean, while a bedroom or bathroom rug can be a little softer and cozier.

Stick With What You Love

Trends come and go, but the best rugs are the ones that make you happy. If it works with your home and feels good under your feet, you’ve made the right choice.

COZY TIP: Think about how the rug will feel, not just how it looks. A rug that adds warmth under your feet and works with your everyday life will always feel cozier than choosing one just because it’s on-trend.

Affordable Cozy Accent Rugs I’m Loving From Walmart Right Now

If January has taught me anything, it’s that a little cozy goes a long way, especially when it doesn’t break the bank.

I went down a Walmart rug rabbit hole and found a bunch of affordable cozy scatter rugs that are stylish, comfy, and under $50.

These work in every room of the house and are just the kind of small scale update that makes a room feel warmer and inviting.

Below are some of my current favorites that hit the sweet spot between budget-friendly, texturally cozy, and stylishly simple.

The Best Way to Keep an Accent Rug From Sliding

One of my biggest pet peeves is a rug that slips and slides all over the floor every time you step on it.

Oh and in our house, Eleanor is notorious for dragging rugs around the house that aren’t secured to the floor!

Now some of the rugs I shared in this post do come with a rubber non-slip backing, which is great for high traffic areas and on hard floors.

However, if the rug you love doesn’t have a nonslip backing, our go-to solution is carpet tape.

It’s simple, inexpensive, and easy to use.

A few small strips placed along the corners or edges of the rug are usually enough to keep it from sliding around, without damaging your floors.

Here is the link to the carpet tape we use, I’ve also heard these rug grippers work great too.

Frequently Asked Questions About Accent Rugs

What size is considered an accent rug?
Accent rugs are smaller in size, most commonly 2×3, 3×5, or runner sizes. They’re meant to highlight a specific area rather than anchor furniture or define an entire room.

Are accent rugs good for small spaces?
Absolutely. Accent rugs are perfect for small spaces because they add warmth and style without being too overwhelming. Entryways, bathrooms, kitchens, and bedrooms all benefit from a smaller rug.

Are affordable rugs good quality?
Budget-friendly does not mean low quality. I’ve purchased quite a few scatter rugs from Walmart and they have all been well-made and durable. Choosing the right material and construction matters more than the price tag.
