On a recent trip to Michael’s to grab a few crafting supplies, I stumbled upon these three-wick fall scented candles with wooden lids.

I loved the blank canvas of the wooden lid, but I thought to myself, “What could I do to make this candle even cozier?”

I was reminded of a DIY project I completed last Christmas where I hot glued natural bottle brush trees to the wooden lid of a candle very similar to the candles in this blog post.

That DIY was incredibly simple to make, so I knew I could easily create something like that again, but for the fall season.

I took another stroll down the seasonal crafting aisles of Micheal’s, looking for inspiration.

The miniature pumpkins, hay bales, & apples caught my eye, and that’s when it hit me…I could create a tiny fall scene right on top of the candle lid.

So cute and cozy!!!

If you’re looking for a fun, simple, and budget-friendly DIY project to get into the autumn spirit, transforming a candle lid into a cozy piece of art is a great way to do just that.

I’ll show you how you can have a personalized, one-of-a-kind candle for your home (or for gift giving) in no time at all!

Find everything you need to make the most of the coziest season of the year.

One. Prepare the Candle Lid

Using a rag or paper towel, gently wipe the candle lid to remove any dirt or debris.

This will help your fall decorations adhere.

Two. Plan Your Fall Scene

Before you start gluing, arrange your miniature decorations on the lid to see how they fit together.

This is the fun part and where you can get creative!

Play around with different placements until you’re happy with the layout.

Maybe you want to create a tiny pumpkin patch or a woodland scene with mini trees and animals.

Three. Glue it Down

Once you’ve decided on your layout, use the hot glue gun to secure each piece in place.

Start with the larger decorations first, and then attach the smaller ones.

Take your time to ensure each item is firmly secured and positioned just right.

Four. Add Finishing Touches

After everything is glued down, step back and take a look to make sure the decorations look somewhat symmetrical and balanced around the candle lid.

You can add a few final touches, like sprinkling a faux moss around the base of your decorations for added texture, or maybe use ribbon to tie a small bow for added whimsy and charm.

Five. Display Your Candle Art

Your candle lid transformation is complete!

Display your decorated candle on a shelf, mantel, dining room table, kitchen counter, or even use it as part of a larger fall centerpiece.

Tips

  • Before you start using the hot glue, arrange your miniature decorations on the lid to experiment with different layouts. This allows you to visualize the look and make adjustments without committing.
  • A little hot glue goes a long way. Apply small dots of glue to avoid excess that might ooze out and become visible.
  • Create a dynamic scene by layering your decorations. Place taller decorations at the back, and smaller items in the front.

Can I use a different candle for this fall DIY?

Yes, you can absolutely use another candle for this fall project.

You’ll want to keep in mind that it’s easier to work with a larger candle because of the extra surface area. This gives you more space to create a detailed fall scene.

I personally think the wooden lid adds a cozy, rustic touch that enhances the autumnal feel of this DIY project, however you can certainly create your fall scene on a metal or plastic candle lid as well.
