What is salt dough?
It’s a simple mixture of flour, salt, and water that can be molded into various shapes. It’s commonly used in DIY projects because it’s easy to shape, bake, or air-dry into a hardened form. The salt in the dough acts as a preservative, helping it harden and last for many years.

One. Cut Out the Leaf Shapes
Once your pumpkin salt dough is ready, roll it out to about a 1/4″ thickness.
Using small leaf shaped cookie cutters, cut out as many leaves as you can.

I used a combination of three leaf shapes for this wreath but feel free to use any variety of shapes you like.
The leaves will be the star of your DIY salt dough wreath, so the more variety, the better!

Two. Bake the Salt Dough Leaves
After cutting out the leaves, place them on a parchment lined cookie sheet.
Preheat your oven to 200 degrees and bake the leaves for about 2 hours.

Halfway through baking, turn the leaves upside down so that each side of the dough dries out evenly.
Make sure to keep an eye on your leaf shapes. Once they’re completely dry and hard to the touch, they’re ready to come out.
Let your salt dough ornaments cool completely on a wire rack before moving on to the next step.
pro Tip
- If your salt dough cut outs develop a white, powdery layer after baking, don’t worry! It’s just some of the salt rising to the surface. Simply wipe them with a tiny bit of vegetable oil using a cloth or paper towel. This will restore their rich, dark brown color.
Three. Tie Ribbon to Wreath Form
This step is optional, but for for an extra touch of charm, tie a seasonal ribbon to your wreath base before you begin attaching the salt dough leaves.
Tie the ribbon into a simple bow at the top, bottom, or even on one side of the wreath (whichever you prefer).

I like my bows to appear floppy for a cozier, more rustic look.
Here are a few examples of ribbon you can use to add a charming fall touch to your DIY wreath…
- Gingham Ribbon: A simple checkered pattern in fall colors is a great choice for this wreath. I’ve been using this brown gingham ribbon all over our home this fall.
- Burlap Ribbon: Adds a rustic, earthy vibe that pairs beautifully with the natural elements of the wreath.
- Velvet Ribbon: Velvet adds elegance and softness to the wreath which is why I decided to use a cream colored one for this DIY project.
- Plaid Ribbon: Classic fall plaid patterns in shades of red, orange, or brown bring a traditional and cozy feel.
- Satin Ribbon: A smooth, shiny satin ribbon gives a sleek and sophisticated look.

Four. Hot Glue the Leaves
Now it’s time to start attaching your salt dough leaves!
Attach a single layer of leaves around the entire wreath ring using the hot glue.
Going around the wreath, add another layer of leaves.
I added 3 layers of salt dough leaves, but you can add as many or as few leaves as you like, depending on how full you want your wreath to look.

Five. Hang & Enjoy
Your DIY salt dough wreath is now ready to be hung!
Find the perfect spot in your home to display your DIY fall wreath.
It will not only add warmth to your home decor, but it will also give off the most delicious, subtle scent of pumpkin spice, making your house smell like fall too!

Tips
- Use different sized cookie cutters to add depth and dimension in your wreath.
- Keep an eye on the leaves toward the end of baking. Overbaking can cause the leaves to crack or curl at the edges.
- The salt dough leaves should be completely hard to the touch before attaching them to the wreath form. If any feel soft, they should be baked in the oven a little longer.
- Feel free to add other fall embellishments to your wreath like pine cones, dried flowers, or putka pods for more texture and variety.
- Remember, you’re not aiming for perfection! The beauty of a salt dough fall wreath is in its handmade charm. Imperfections in the leaves or their arrangement add character and give the wreath a more natural, rustic look. So don’t worry if everything isn’t symmetrical or perfectly shaped. It’s all part of the cozy, homemade feel.
Can I use a grapevine wreath as the base for this DIY?
Absolutely!
A grapevine wreath would be a great way to add a little more texture to the overall look and would complement the earthy tones of the salt dough leaves.
FAQ: DIY Salt Dough Wreath
Can I make the salt dough leaves ahead of time?
You can bake the salt dough leaves in advance and store them in an airtight container until you’re ready to assemble the wreath.
What can I do if my pumpkin spice salt dough turns white during baking?
A white, powdery appearance is common with salt dough. You can easily restore the dark brown color by wiping the leaves with a little vegetable oil after baking.
How long will the salt dough wreath last?
If kept dry and stored carefully, the wreath can last for several years. You can use an acrylic sealer to help protect the wreath from moisture.
Can I hang my salt dough wreath outside?
I don’t recommend hanging your DIY wreath outside.
It’s best to keep the wreath indoors. Exposure to rain and moisture can cause the salt dough to soften or break.
