Decorating Ideas for an Antique Secretary Desk in Your Home
Secretary desk decorating ideas with tips on styling and what to look for when shopping for the perfect antique piece to add charm & character to your home.

I’m excited to share our “new” antique secretary desk with you that we added to our living room over Christmas break!
You might remember we had a vintage dresser in this spot previously, but if not, you can see it here.
I’ve been secretly wanting to add an old secretary desk to this corner of our home for a while, but finding a desk that felt just right, took some time.
After a couple of months of searching our local thrift stores and FB Marketplace, I finally came across this antique desk.
And if I’m being completely honest, it wasn’t love at first sight.
The desk was a little smaller than I originally wanted and it didn’t have the bonnet top that you typically associate with a secretary desk.
However, after examining the desk more closely I found it was in great condition, and there were so many unique details that added so much character to the piece (I’ll talk about those more in a few minutes) that I couldn’t pass it up.
Plus the $125 price tag sealed the deal for me!
So in this post, I’m sharing what made this piece so special, tips on what to look for when shopping for a secretary desk, and how I styled ours to fit seamlessly into our home.
If you’ve been considering adding a secretary desk to your space or are just curious about how to decorate one, keep reading…I’ve got plenty of ideas to inspire you.
Why choose a vintage secretary desk?
An antique secretary desk is so much more than just a piece of furniture.
It’s a cozy and timeless addition that brings character and charm to your home.
I think there’s something so special about the history and craftsmanship that an antique piece carries with it. The intricate details, like unique carvings or original hardware, tell a story.
One of the reasons I’ve always loved secretary desks is their ability to blend beauty and function.
They’re compact and perfect for smaller spaces.
The fold down writing area and hidden compartments are not only practical but also add a sense of whimsy and surprise that I adore. It’s like uncovering little secrets every time you open it!
What I love most is how a secretary desk can become a focal point.
Styled with meaningful decor, books, or seasonal accents, it becomes a piece that makes your home feel unique, collected, and inviting.
The History of Secretary Desks
Secretary desks date back to the 17th century. Originally designed for letter writing and keeping important documents secure, these desks were often used by nobility and wealthy households. Over time their designs evolved with ornate carvings, inlays, and unique features like hidden compartments and fold down writing surfaces. By the 18th and 19th centuries, secretary desks became a staple in homes, valued for their compact design and ability to combine beauty with practicality.

Where to Shop for an Antique Desk
Secretary desks are pretty common finds both online and in secondhand shops, making it relatively easy to start your search.
There are plenty of options to explore whether you’re looking for a piece with a little damage or something in more pristine condition.
Local thrift stores and antique shops are great places to begin.
A thrift store often has affordable pieces, although you’ll need to check frequently as inventory changes very quickly.
Antique shops, on the other hand, tend to have a more curated selection, often showcasing desks that have been well cared for or restored.
Estate sales and flea markets can be a treasure troves for unique finds.
At estate sales, you may come across desks with rich histories at reasonable prices while flea markets can offer one-of-a-kind pieces but might require a little DIY.
Facebook Marketplace is another great resource. It allows you to shop locally and communicate directly with sellers.
Sometimes, the best finds come through word of mouth. Let friends and family know you’re looking for a secretary desk, they might know someone ready to part with a beloved piece.
No matter where you shop, patience is key!
Finding the perfect antique secretary desk can take time, but the reward of discovering a piece that fits your style is well worth the hunt.
What to Look for When Shopping for an Old Secretary Desk
When shopping for a secretary desk, there are a few things to keep in mind to ensure you find a piece that fits your style, needs, and home perfectly.
Here are a few questions that I asked myself when I was considering purchasing a thrifted antique desk…
- What is my budget? Can I invest in a higher quality piece, or do I want to hunt for a more affordable option that might be in rough shape and need some TLC?
- Am I willing to DIY? If the desk needs repairs or refinishing, do I have the time to tackle a project like this?
- How will I use the desk? Do I need it for storage, as a workspace, or primarily for decorative purposes?
- Does the desk fit my space? Will it work with the scale of our room and other furniture?
- Do I want a specific style? Am I looking for ornate details like a bonnet top, or do I prefer something simpler and more understated?
What I Love About the Antique Secretary Desk We Purchased
As I mentioned earlier, I did not instantly fall in love with the desk we bought.
It was kind of like when you first meet someone you don’t know. They seem nice at first, but as you get to know them, you realize just how special and unique they really are.
That’s exactly how I felt about this antique secretary desk!
At first glance, it seemed unassuming, a little smaller than I imagined and lacking the traditional bonnet top I had wanted.
However, the more I looked at it and appreciated its details, the more I fell in love.
So, what was it that drew me to this desk?
The carved feet were one of the first features I noticed. They add a sense of craftsmanship that really adds to the history and character of the piece.
The gorgeous antique drawer pulls with their worn patina, are another feature I adore. They’re functional yet brimming with vintage charm.

Then there are the arched glass doors, which provide the perfect peek inside the cabinet where I can display seasonal (and non-seasonal) decorations.
An actual working lock and key felt like finding a hidden treasure that makes the desk even more special.

And then there are the smaller details that truly make this piece one-of-a-kind, like the delicate carving on the front of the fold-down desk and the scalloped detail framing the letter slots on the inside.

All of these features create a desk I treasure and feel so lucky to have found.
It’s proof that sometimes the things that grow on you, turn out to be the ones you love most.

Highlight the Glass Doors
If your desk has a secretary hutch or bookcase with glass doors, use them to display your favorite decor items.
Glass doors not only protect what’s inside but also draw the eye in, making the contents a central part of the desk’s overall aesthetic.
Create a Focal Point
You can stack a few hardcover books with interesting spines, and top them with a small decorative objects, like a cloche, vintage clock, brass figurines or a small potted plant.
This combination will add height and visual interest to the shelves.
Layer Your Decor
When styling, think in layers for depth and to make your shelves look more dynamic.
Place larger items like a framed photo, a piece of art, or a decorative platter at the back of the shelf, and layer smaller items like candles, trinket boxes, or figurines in front.

Play With Symmetry
To keep your eye moving around the shelves of the hutch, remember to incorporate symmetry into your display.
Symmetry creates balance, which makes your decorations feel more cohesive and visually pleasing.
Start by dividing the hutch into sections, especially if it has multiple glass panels or shelves.
Treat each section as a mirror image of the other.
For example, place identical or similar item on either side of the hutch. This immediately creates balance and draws the eye to the center.
You can also vary the objects while maintaining symmetry in height or scale.
For instance, place a stack of books on one side and a small box or a planter of similar height on the other.
The important thing to remember is that symmetry doesn’t mean rigid uniformity.
Incorporate Seasonal Decor
The desk hutch is a perfect spot to infuse seasonal charm into your home.
By swapping out decor items with each season, you can keep the space feeling fresh, festive, and aligned with the time of year.

Keep it Simple
Avoid overcrowding the shelves behind the glass doors.
Too many items can make the display feel cluttered and detract from the overall look of the desk.
Instead, focus on a few thoughtful pieces that complement each other.
Use Color & Texture
Introduce a variety of textures and tones to keep your desk visually engaging.
Combine materials like wood, glass, ceramic, and metal, and choose a color scheme that complements the desk and the room.
I always lean to neutral tones with pops of color because it feels timeless and cozy.

Add Personal Touches
Glass doors are a great way to showcase meaningful items like a favorite heirloom, a collection of vintage teacups, or a framed piece of artwork.
These personal touches will make your desk unique to your home.

Style the Fold Down Surface
The fold-down surface of a secretary desk is one of its most charming and functional features!
No matter how you use this part of the desk, whether it becomes a workspace, a decorative display, or a mix of both, styling this area can elevate the look of your desk and make it a focal point in your home.
If you plan to use the surface as a workspace, you’ll want to keep the decor simple and functional.
A small notepad, a beautiful pen, or a stack of stationery adds purpose without overwhelming the space.

To make the area feel cozy and inviting, think about adding a table lamp or candles. These elements not only make the desk look charming, but also create ambiance, especially in the evening.

If you plan to use the surface as a decorative display, this is the perfect spot to showcase a few of your favorite items.
A framed photograph, a small vase filled with fresh flowers, or a decorative figurine can add meaning to the desk.
Make Use of the Letter Slots
The letter slots inside a secretary desk are not only practical for organizing small items, but also offer an opportunity to add a decorative touch.
This part of the desk was originally designed for holding letters and important documents, but these slots can now be repurposed to reflect your personal style.
One way to use the letter slots is to organize pretty stationery, envelopes, and note cards.
Choose stationery with elegant designs or vintage inspired patterns to make these slots feel both functional and beautiful.

You can also use the letter slots to store small decorative items like a favorite postcard, a piece of patterned scrapbook paper, or even a pressed flower.
If you want a more practical approach, the slots are perfect for keeping your everyday essentials like receipts, to-do lists, or recipe cards organized.
Add Decor to the Top
If your secretary desk has a bonnet top, you may not want to distract from its architectural beauty with decorations placed on the top.
The curves and intricate details of a bonnet top can stand alone as a focal point.
However, for desks like ours, the top becomes an excellent spot to have a little fun and add extra charm & personality.
Since our desk does not have a bonnet top and is on the shorter side, I wanted to use the space above it to draw the eye upward and make the piece feel more prominent in the room.

To achieve this, I placed a swan planter filled with faux red geraniums (read more on the unexpected red theory) on the top of the desk.
The planter adds a pop of color and the bold blooms balance the warm tones of the desk and make the overall look feel fresh and inviting.
One thing you don’t want to forget is scale when styling the top of your desk.
Items that are too large can overpower the desk, while items that are too small will feel lost.
Aim for a balanced look that complements the desk’s size and design, ensuring the decor feels intentional rather than cluttered.

Cheryl your desk sounds lovely! I do not know what type of wood our desk is, it could be mahogany but I’m not 100% sure.
Oh Heide, I love every thing about your secretary desk. All the details are charming. It looks like Maple wood to me. Do you know what type of wood it is? My style leans more towards cottage core and roll top desks, which I have. My beloved grandmother bought it for me 40 years ago. I cherish it. I think what you choose fits in beautifully, and I love the option of decorating the top.
