Easy Avocado Chicken Salad Without Mayo or Yogurt

This easy avocado chicken salad is made without mayo or yogurt, just creamy avocado, tender rotisserie chicken, and a few fresh ingredients. It’s a healthy and flavorful twist on a classic!

Want to know a secret about me?
Well, it’s not really a secret if you know me, but I CANNOT (big caps here) eat mayo, Greek yogurt, sour cream, or cream cheese.
I know, for someone who shares a lot of comfort food and cozy recipes, that might come as a surprise.
But creamy condiments and I do not get along.
I don’t know exactly why, but something about the texture and the smell… it’s a no for me and always has been.
So, when it comes to recipes that traditionally rely on those ingredients, I have to get a little creative.
That’s how this avocado chicken salad with no mayo or yogurt was born.
It’s everything you love about classic chicken salad (creamy, flavorful, satisfying) but without any of the ingredients I avoid.
I promise, you won’t miss the mayo!
This salad is still rich and creamy but in a fresh kind of way thanks to ripe avocados, a squeeze of lime, and a drizzle of olive oil.
It comes together in just minutes, and it’s perfect for picnics (you don’t have to worry about keeping this chicken salad cold), lunches, or a lazy dinner.
Whether you despise mayo like me or just looking for a lighter twist on a classic, this recipe might just become your new favorite!
Why Avocado in Chicken Salad
You might not immediately think of pairing avocado with chicken salad, however avocado adds a naturally creamy texture that eliminates the need for dairy or heavy dressings.
It acts as a binder and flavor booster adding richness, healthy fats, and a subtle buttery taste that complements the chicken perfectly.
Plus, the avocado keeps the salad feeling fresh and light.

Ingredients You’ll Need for Chicken Avocado Salad
Here’s what goes into this simple chicken salad made with avocados…
Why Rotisserie Chicken?
It’s one of my favorite kitchen shortcuts. Rotisserie chicken is tender and flavorful but most importantly it saves so much time! Instead of cooking and shredding chicken yourself, you can grab a rotisserie chicken from your local grocery store and have most of the work already done for you.

01
Mash the Avocados
In a large mixing bowl, mash the peeled and pitted avocados with lime juice, olive oil, salt, and pepper.
Now if you want a chunkier salad, mash lightly.
For a smoother texture, mash more thoroughly.
02
Combine the Ingredients
Stir in the shredded chicken and minced red onion.
Gently toss everything together until fully combined.
03
Serve and Enjoy
Scoop the salad onto croissant rolls, sandwich bread, or lettuce cups.
You can also serve it as a dip with crackers or tortilla chips!

Helpful Tips
- Make sure your avocados are soft to the touch but not mushy. Ripe avocados will mash easily and give the salad its creamy texture.
- The finer you shred the chicken, the better it blends into the avocado mixture and stays on sandwiches or wraps without falling apart.
- Don’t wait to add the lime juice. It helps prevent the avocados from browning and gives the salad a bright flavor.
How to Serve Easy Avocado Chicken Salad
My favorite way to serve this chicken salad is piled high on buttery croissants.
You could also spread it on your favorite sandwich bread for a quick lunch or light dinner.
If you want a low-carb option, you can scoop it into lettuce cups or spoon it over a bed of greens for a hearty salad.
It also makes a tasty dip, just serve it with crackers, pita chips, or sliced veggies.
NOTE: When making an avocado chicken salad sandwich, add the salad to the bread right before serving. The chicken salad will soften the bread over time especially if you’re using croissants or soft sandwich rolls. If you’re prepping ahead, store the salad and bread separately and assemble when you’re ready to eat.
How to Store Chicken Salad
Since this salad is avocado based, it’s best enjoyed the same day it’s made.
But you can, store any leftovers in an airtight container with plastic wrap pressed directly onto the surface to minimize browning.
You’ll want to enjoy this chicken salad within a day for best flavor and color.
