I have a soft spot in my heart for anything that feels nostalgic.

Vintage dishes.

Scrubbed pine furniture.

Stencils.

Patterns that remind me of childhood kitchens and summer picnics.

And over the past couple of years, I’ve been noticing one pattern popping up over, and over, and over again…

Gingham.

With any “trend”, I thought gingham would stick around for a season or two, but I noticed that it’s not going anywhere in home decor or fashion anytime soon.

In fact, the opposite is happening.

Gingham is making it’s way back into our homes like classic patterns tend to do.

You’ll see it everywhere these days on kitchen towels, curtains, wallpaper, throw pillows, dresses, ribbon, and furniture.

And the reason is pretty simple.

Gingham never really goes out of style.

It’s one of those patterns that feels cheerful and familiar at the same time.

It feels like home.

As more of us look for ways to make our homes feel warmer, more personal, and less “perfect,” it makes sense that this checkered pattern is finding its way back into our everyday spaces.

What exactly is gingham?

Home decorating with gingham in the living room for a classic, nostalgic look.

Gingham is a woven fabric (or printed pattern) with evenly spaced checks in two colors, typically one color and white.

Unlike plaid, which uses multiple colors and varies in stripe width, gingham is simple.

Just two colors and the same size checks, every, single, time.

The pattern first emerged in rural homes in the 18th and 19th centuries and was loved because it was lightweight, affordable, and durable.

It appeared on practical everyday fabrics like tablecloths, curtains, aprons, and bed linens.

Fast forward to today, and that same combination of simplicity and character is exactly why designers and home decorators are drawn to it.

Why Gingham is Making a Comeback in Home Decor

Here’s the thing about gingham…

It never really went away.

It just faded into the background for a while other patterns had their moment.

But something has been shifting over the past few years that I think most of us have noticed.

We’re tired of homes that look perfect but don’t feel like anything.

We want warmth, texture, and patterns that remind us of something.

And that’s exactly what gingham does.

You’ll find it on more than just tablecloths and aprons these days…accent chairs, wallpaper, and upholstered headboards are just a few examples of where this charming pattern is making a comeback.

I think it’s probably safe to say that gingham has officially crossed over from “quaint” to “design-forward.”

Why Gingham Works in a Cozy Home

  • Timeless. Gingham has been used in homes for generations, which gives it a familiar and nostalgic feel.
  • Adds pattern without feeling busy. The simple check design brings interest to a room while still feeling calm and balanced.
  • Mixes well with other patterns. Gingham easily pairs with florals, stripes, plaids, and other classic prints.
  • Works with neutral color palettes. Soft colors like cream, beige, blue, and green gingham blend easily into cozy, relaxed spaces.
  • Fits naturally with vintage and cottage style decor. Gingham feels right at home alongside scrubbed pine furniture, woven baskets, and thrifted finds.
  • Easy to layer. Gingham can be added in small touches with home accents like throw pillows, curtains, lamp shades, kitchen linens, bedding, and furniture.

How to Decorate With Gingham Room by Room

As I mentioned earlier, gingham is extremely versatile and can literally work in any room in your home, but how you use it should shift depending on the space.

From a single throw pillow in the living room to a shower curtain in the bathroom, here’s how to approach each room with confidence…

Living Room Decor Featuring Gingham

The living room is one of the best places to experiment with gingham, because there are so many ways to use it from throw pillows to a full upholstered sofa.

Here’s how you can approach it at different commitment levels:

  • Low Commitment: Start with gingham throw pillows on your sofa. This is the easiest way to try the trend without redecorating the entire room.
  • Medium Commitment: A gingham lamp shade, a gingham patterned rug, or a gingham throw blanket draped over an armchair adds pattern without being too dominating.
  • Bold Statement: A gingham accent chair or a gingham upholstered sofa becomes the room’s focal point.
  • Unexpected Choice: Large scale gingham wallpaper can make a big statement if you want to go all in.

Gingham Bedroom Ideas

Gingham in the bedroom has a naturally cozy, restful feel especially when used in bedding and soft furnishings.

I think it’s one of the rooms where the pattern really stands out.

Gingham bed sheets, duvet covers, and pillowcases are always a bestseller for a reason…the checked pattern adds visual interest without being overstimulating, and it goes well with almost every style of bedroom.

  • Layer a gingham duvet or quilt with solid linen pillowcases in a coordinating color for an easy, layered look.
  • If you have a floral comforter, gingham curtains can be a great choice for visual appeal.
  • A gingham upholstered headboard makes a strong statement without requiring many other decorations.
  • For a children’s bedroom, gingham is a timeless choice that grows with the child and works in both boys’ and girls’ rooms.

COZY TIP: For a cottage style bedroom, pair gingham bedding with floral prints, ruffled pillow edges, and antique inspired accessories like vintage picture frames.

Gingham in the Kitchen and Dining Room

The kitchen and dining room are perhaps gingham’s most natural home, it’s where the pattern has the longest history.

Now the key in the kitchen is not to overdo it.

You don’t want your cooking space to look like something out of “Little House on the Prairie.”

Or maybe you do, and that’s fine too!

  • Tablecloth or Table Runner: A gingham tablecloth or runner is the easiest way to add a touch of gingham.
  • Sink Skirt: A gingham fabric sink skirt is a charming, budget-friendly way to add character to any kitchen. It’s something I want to try in the future!
  • Seat Cushions: Chair pads in gingham on kitchen or dining room chairs are practical and stylish.
  • Accessories: Dish towels, oven mitts, napkins, and placemats in gingham add warmth without a big commitment.

Bathroom Decorating With Gingham

The bathroom is one of the most overlooked rooms when it comes to decor.

But, it’s such a great space to add a little pattern!

Gingham actually works beautifully in a bathroom, because it doesn’t take much to make the room feel cozy and intentional.

  • A gingham shower curtain is one of the easiest changes you can make, and probably one of the most impactful.
  • Check print towels and a matching bathmat bring the pattern in without any commitment.
  • A gingham sink skirt adds that charming, vintage touch that works especially well in a cottage style bathroom.

How to Mix Gingham With Other Patterns

One of the biggest mistakes people make when decorating with gingham is treating it as a pattern that can’t play with others.

In reality, gingham is one of the most mixable prints in interior design, you just need to know how to do it.

  • Gingham + Florals = Classic cottage style combination that’s soft and timeless.
  • Gingham + Ticking Stripes = The structure of both patterns balances each other.
  • Gingham + Plaid = Perfect for cozy spaces and layered textiles.
  • Gingham + Toile = Great for vintage inspired or French country homes.
  • Gingham + Block Prints = Creates a collected, cozy look.

COZY TIP: When layering multiple patterns, vary the scale. If your gingham is medium scale, pair it with a large-scale floral and a small scale stripe. This keeps the patterns from competing for attention and allows the eye to move through the room.

Heidi’s 7 Expert Tips for Decorating With Gingham

It doesn’t matter if you’re just dipping your toe in with a throw pillow or committing to a full gingham overhaul, these ideas will keep your home looking intentional rather than accidental…

  • Start With Color: Choose your gingham color first, then build the rest of the room’s color scheme around it.
  • Consider Scale Carefully: Small scale checks add subtle texture; large scale checks make a statement. Match the scale to the size of the piece and the room.
  • Pair With Natural Materials: Wood, linen, rattan, stone, and woven textures all complement gingham.
  • Avoid an Overdose: I love gingham as an accent. Let one or two gingham pieces anchor the room.
  • Mix Check Sizes: Two different scales of gingham can work together because the eye reads them as related, but distinct.
  • Seasonal Swap: Gingham works all year round, but I especially love it in spring and summer. Think about slipcovers or throw pillow covers so you can rotate gingham in for the warmer months.
  • Let it Breathe: Gingham is a pattern with strong visual energy. Give it blank space, plain walls, and solid sofas so it has room to make an impact.

Frequently Asked Questions About How to Decorate With Gingham

Is gingham in style?
Yes and honestly, I don’t see it going anywhere anytime soon. Gingham is one of those patterns that keeps coming back because it never really left. It’s showing up everywhere on wallpaper, furniture, bedding, kitchen accessories.

Is gingham timeless or trendy?
It’s both and that’s what makes it a smart choice for your home. Gingham has been around for centuries, so it’s never going to feel dated, but right now it also happens to be having a major moment.

What colors of gingham are best for home decor?
This is a personal choice, but some of my favorites right now are dusty blue and white, green and white, and camel and cream. Classic red and white will always have a place (especially in kitchens) and black and white is having a moment too if you want something more modern.

What patterns go well with gingham?
Gingham is one of the most mixable patterns out there, which is part of why I love it so much. It’s beautiful with florals, stripes, and toile. When in doubt, just mix it with simple, solid linens and let it shine on its own.

What is the difference between gingham and plaid?
Great question, they get mixed up a lot! Gingham is simple with just two colors (always one color plus white), always the same size check, and always symmetrical. Plaid uses multiple colors and varying stripe widths, so it’s busier and more complex looking.
