If someone said to me, “Heidi, you can only decorate with one pattern in your home for the rest of your life, which would it be?”

I would hem & haw for a few minutes, mentally debating between all of the different options there are to choose from.

I mean…gingham is charming and timeless, stripes are classic and versatile, and florals bring a touch of nature indoors. But ultimately, my heart (and mind) would choose block print.

Do you remember that Savage Garden song, “Truly, Madly, Deeply”? Yup, that’s how I feel about block print patterns.

I love ’em. To me, there’s something irresistible and beautiful about them.

From rich colors to small and large patterns, block print offers endless possibilities to personalize home decor with warmth and charm.

In this blog post, we’ll explore some block print decor ideas that you can try in your home.

These ideas will help you bring this timeless pattern into your living spaces, whether you’re looking to make a bold statement or just a few subtle accents.

What is block print?

Block print, also known as block printing, is a traditional textile printing technique that originated in India over 2,000 years ago.

It involves carving intricate designs onto wooden blocks and using them to hand-stamp patterns onto fabric or paper, creating detailed prints with straight lines and well defined negative space.

This art form is renowned for its unique designs, bright colors, and the artisanal skill involved in creating each piece.

How are block print fabrics made?

Block print fabric is made through a simple process where skilled artisans carve intricate designs onto wooden blocks.

These blocks are then dipped in dye or ink pads and hand stamped onto fabric, creating a perfect block print.

After printing, the fabric is dried and often treated to set the colors, resulting in vibrant, unique, and durable patterns.

Block printing was actually a Road Block on an episode of the Amazing Race (unfortunately, I don’t remember which season). The process looked so fun, but also made you realize how difficult block printing can be, especially when different colors are involved.

Today, some manufacturers use modern methods to streamline the block print process for mass production.

These methods might include mechanized stamping or digital fabric printing to replicate the look of block print while increasing efficiency and consistency for larger scale production.

Why incorporate block print into your home decor?

Incorporating block print into your home decor is an easy way to elevate your space.

The intricate patterns of block print add depth and character, making them versatile enough to complement a wide range of design styles (traditional, farmhouse, vintage, minimalist, etc.).

Their versatility also allows them to be used in various ways, from curtains and bedding to rugs and accent pillows, easily tying together different elements of your decor.

Before we begin decorating with block print, here are a few things to consider:

  • Start Small: If you’re new to block print, begin with smaller items like throw pillows, napkins, or table runners. This is a great way to introduce the pattern without overwhelming your space.
  • Mix Patterns Carefully: While block print patterns are versatile, mixing them with other patterns requires thoughtful consideration. Choose complementary colors or mix scales (large & small patterns) to create visual interest without clashing.
  • Focus on Balance: Balance bold block print patterns with neutral elements in your decor. This will help prevent the space from feeling too busy.
  • Use as Statement Pieces: Use block print as statement pieces in your room. A block print duvet cover or curtains can serve as a focal point and anchor the entire room.
  • Consider the Season: Swap out block print accents seasonally to keep your decor fresh. Opt for lighter colors and airy fabrics in spring and summer, and richer colors and heavier textures in fall and winter.

I like to mix and match different block print designs to create a curated look.

On our sofa, I combined larger block print patterned pillows with smaller block print patterned pillows.

The combination of big & small patterns makes your eyes bounce around from pillow to pillow adding visual interest.

You can also pair a block print pillow with solid colored pillows as well. Pick a dominant color from the block print and use that as the solid color for contrast and balance.

Pro Tip: When shopping for throw pillows, always choose ones with removable covers. Removable covers make it easy to clean and maintain your pillows. They also offer the flexibility to change up your decor seasonally or whenever you desire a new look, without needing to purchase entirely new pillows.

Curtains & Drapes

This is my personal favorite way to change up the look of a room. I’ve loved curtains ever since I can remember.

They have this amazing ability to transform the feeling of a space with coziness, warmth, texture, and personality.

So when it comes to incorporating block print into your home decor, curtains and drapes are a great option.

I’ve repurposed block print tablecloths into curtains for our living room, creating a one-of-a-kind look when I couldn’t find a block print pattern I loved in-store or online.

Another creative project I did involved turning block print bed sheets into charming cafe curtains, proving that decor doesn’t always need to come from traditional sources.

Most recently, I discovered stunning block print curtains on Amazon and repurposed them into aprons for the bottom of our kitchen hutch.

This unexpected twist added a touch of whimsy and practicality to our kitchen, which I think shows the versatility of block print beyond the traditional window treatments.

If you’re looking for an easy way to elevate the look of your kitchen or dining table, using a block print tablecloth, runner, placemats, or block print napkins is an easy way to do that.

The patterns can range from florals and paisleys to geometric designs which is great for complimenting various dining and decor styles.

Block print table linens are also practical.

They are typically made from durable linen fabrics (I always make sure to read the label before making a purchase) that are easy to maintain and wash, making them perfect for everyday use or for special occasions.

We have bold floral wallpaper behind our bed which I love, but it can be a little difficult to find bedding that doesn’t compete with the wallpaper.

So, we have a gingham duvet cover with block print sheets in coordinating colors.

This combination works well because the gingham pattern is simple and neutral, allowing the intricate block print designs on the sheets to add just the right amount of visual interest without clashing with the floral wallpaper.
