How to Download, Resize, and Print Free Art

Once you’ve found a piece you love, download the highest resolution version available to your digital device.

A higher-quality file will give you the sharpest print, especially if you want to print a larger size.

Resizing Prints

The easiest way to resize digital artwork is with Canva.

It’s free to use (you don’t need the paid version), takes just a few minutes, and makes it simple to create artwork that fits the frame you already own.

How to do it:

Create a new design in Canva using the dimensions of your frame. For example, if you’re printing an 8″ × 10″ print, create an 8″ × 10″ design.
Upload your vintage art by clicking “Uploads” in the left-hand menu and selecting the image you downloaded.
Drag the artwork onto your canvas. Canva will automatically place it on your page.
Resize and reposition the image by dragging the corners to make it larger or smaller. If the artwork doesn’t perfectly match the proportions of your frame, double-click the image to adjust the crop until you’re happy with how it looks.
Download your finished print as a high-quality PDF or PNG file before sending it to your printer or print shop.

Once you’ve resized your artwork, it’s time to print so you can display it in your home.

A home printer can give you good results when you’re printing smaller sizes like 5″ × 7″ or 8″ × 10″ prints.

Just be sure to use heavyweight matte paper or cardstock instead of regular copy paper.

The thicker paper gives vintage artwork a richer, more authentic look with less glare.

For larger prints, I recommend using a local print shop or an online printing service.

They have professional printers that produce sharper details, richer colors, and smoother gradients than most home printers.

Millet first treated this subject in a woodcut, one of ten in the series Labors of the Fields that were published in a popular periodical in 1853.

In 1874, Tait stayed all year at Long Lake in the Adirondacks where he painted a number of hunting pictures. In this work, English hunting dogs (Pointers and Gordon Setters) chase ruffled grouse. The dogs probably belonged to one of Tait's neighbors at Long Lake, perhaps a wealthy patron who commissioned the picture.

Dashing in his snugly fitting riding clothes, the sitter of this portrait was the scion of a wealthy banking family. Married at age seventeen, he later “ruined his life by gambling and dissipation,” according to a family historian, and abandoned his wife and children. In depicting Drummond as a paragon of landed masculinity, Raeburn drew on the longstanding tradition of equestrian portraits

Sun-streaked clouds scudding across the sky dominate this placid landscape, a classic example of the luminous style that made Cuyp a beloved artist among eighteenth- and nineteenth-century collectors. Based on studies made in nature, the painting is nonetheless a studio confection. Resting livestock and agrarian laborers appear as timeless parts of the landscape in a reassuring vision for the landowning collectors able to display such a monumental scene.

An entry in Mount’s diary from November 1862 records that he began a painting of houses in Setauket, New York.

This painting dates from a peak period of James Peale's career. While he typically used somber colors and linear forms, his use of vivid colors and painterly execution in this work suggest that it is a somewhat experimental exercise. With its focus on lavish vegetable forms, this work resembles still lifes of the Spanish school. The vegetables are, from left to right, okra, blue-green cabbage, crinkly Savoy cabbage, Hubbard squash, eggplant, balsam apple, tomatoes, and purple-red cabbage.

The numbers and variety of game on the Plains provided a varied diet for Catlin and the soldiers and traders who lived along the frontier. In 1835, Catlin returned from Fort Snelling to Prairie du Chien, this time by canoe, living principally on game during the trip.

English-born artist Guy settled in New York City in 1854. In this lively domestic scene, commissioned by the financier Robert Gordon, three children vie for a small corsage while a fourth seeks comfort in her mother’s lap.

In this early painting, which is interesting for its slightly eccentric, off-balance composition, Fantin had yet to achieve the extraordinary realism associated with his still lifes of the mid- to late 1860s.

This painting, made from life about 1856, depicts a dog that belonged to a gentleman known as the Vicomte d'Armaille. It is one of Bonheur's numerous portraits of hunting dogs and pets.
