If you’ve been on social media the past couple of summers, chances are you’ve heard whispers (or shouts) of Tomato Girl Summer.

It was one of those aesthetic trends that took over of the internet.

Imagine dresses flowing in the breeze, ripe tomatoes from the garden, a glass of wine in hand, and afternoons straight out of a vintage postcard from the Amalfi Coast.

But here’s the thing…I actually didn’t pay attention to this trend when it first became popular.

Like, at all.

It wasn’t until recently when I stumbled upon an article (I can’t remember where for the life of me I saw it) that said something to the effect of…tomato girl summer is back.

Being my curious self, I started reading the article, and realized that the tomato girl aesthetic is more than a trend, it’s a lifestyle choice.

It wasn’t the fashion or the vacation photos that drew me in.

It was the feeling behind all of it.

The idea of slowing down.

Savoring a homegrown tomato with a sprinkle of sea salt.

Letting the laundry dry in the sun.

Living a little more like you’re on a slow summer holiday, even if you never leave your backyard.

So even though I may have missed the trend when it first became popular (typical for me lol), I’m all in now!

I think it’s the perfect mindset to carry with us into summer and beyond, let me tell you why…

What is a tomato girl summer?

I’m not sure who the first person was that started this trend, but tomato girl summer gained popularity on TikTok and Instagram where creators shared sun soaked vignettes of their lives that looked like they were plucked from an old European film.

It’s rooted in Italian coastal charm, with a heavy dose of Mediterranean flair and vintage nostalgia.

Think bowls of tomatoes on the counter, simple summer meals eaten al fresco, bare feet on warm cobblestone, and just a general sense of slowness.

The aesthetic is warm, rustic, and delightfully imperfect which is exactly my cup of tea.

It’s about messy buns (yes!!!!), breezy linen outfits, bronzed skin, and spending your days barefoot in the kitchen making sauce from scratch.

A European summer sounds delightful, right?!

Why Tomato Girl Summer is Still Relevant

Personally, the idea of a tomato girl summer resonates with me, because it feels attainable.

You don’t need to hop on a plane, you don’t need a passport, and you don’t need to spend your vacation fund.

All you need is a ripe tomato, sunshine, and a mindset that values presence over perfection.

Tomato girl summer is a reminder that beauty isn’t just in far off places or elaborate plans, it’s in our kitchens, our gardens, and our quiet routines.

That’s why it still matters.

Because more than anything, it invites us to live with presence and nostalgia, and who doesn’t need more of that?

A few easy ways to channel your inner tomato girl this summer:

  • Start your day slow, with a journal and a cappuccino.
  • Spend time in the garden or snip fresh herbs from your windowsill.
  • Share meals with loved ones, even if it’s just a simple bowl of pasta.
  • Make bruschetta with fresh tomatoes and crusty bread.
  • Unplug in the evening and enjoy stroll around your neighborhood.

Tomato girl is all about engaging the five senses. Feel the sun on your skin, taste a juicy tomato, smell fresh basil, hear soft music playing in the background, and surround yourself with beauty you can see and touch.

Visit Your Local Farmer’s Market

There’s something so lovely about walking through a local farmer’s market on a summer morning from the baskets overflowing with seasonal produce to the hum of friendly conversations.

Make it a weekly ritual.

Grab the juiciest heirloom tomatoes you can find, a bunch of fragrant basil (or parsley if you’re not a fan of basil like me), and a crusty loaf of bread to bring home.

And don’t forget to treat yourself to a bouquet of wildflowers.

Display them in a glass mason jar on your kitchen countertop to make everyday life feel a little more special.

Dress the Part

You don’t need a suitcase packed for Italy to dress like a tomato girl.

Choose breathable, natural materials like linen or cotton, and silhouettes that feel effortless like midi dresses, puff sleeves, and of course a pair of espadrilles.

Add a wicker tote bag, straw hat, and a pair of oversized sunglasses (you know, the ones like Jacqueline Kennedy used to wear).

Remember tomato girl fashion isn’t about perfection, it’s about being comfortable and feeling naturally beautiful.

Cook With Love

Tomato girl summer is rooted in the kitchen.

But not in a complicated, follow-this-exact-recipe kind of way.

It’s throwing together simple ingredients with care.

Slice those fresh tomatoes you picked up, drizzle with a good olive oil, sprinkle with salt, and layer with basil.

Voilà, the perfect meal for a summer day!

Or slowly simmer a pot of tomato sauce on the stove while Italian music plays in the background.

Cooking becomes less of a chore and more of a love language when it’s done slowly, intentionally, and with a little joy.

Eat Al Fresco

One of my favorite things to do in the summer, is to eat outside.

I don’t know why, but there’s something about dining al fresco that makes a meal feel more relaxed and more cozy.

You don’t need a fancy setup.

Just a small table, a linen or checkered tablecloth, some candles, string lights, and maybe a pitcher of something refreshing.

Whether it’s dinner with family or a lunch alone with a good book, this is how you can bring the vibe of a sun drenched Italian café to your own backyard.

It’s la dolce vita.

The sweet life, in its most beautiful, everyday form.

Slowing down, savoring the moment, and turning an ordinary meal into something you want to linger over.

Romanticize Your Routine

Romanticizing the little things is the heart of the whole tomato girl lifestyle.

Start your morning with coffee in a favorite mug.

Light a candle while you wash the dishes.

Play music while folding laundry.

Add lemon slices to your water.

These may seem like small gestures, but they have a unique way of turning ordinary moments into ones that feel meaningful and special.

Life doesn’t have to be grand to be beautiful, it just has to be…noticed.
