Last week I was given an opportunity I’ve been hoping and praying for over the last few years (a little behind-the-scenes blogger thing).

A couple of years ago, I went after the very same thing and was turned down.

At the time, that “no” felt devastating.

I had poured so much time and energy into the blog, and being told I wasn’t ready stung more than I cared to admit.

Honestly, I even questioned if this blogging/content creating path was right for me.

But here’s the thing…looking back now, I can see how that “no” was actually one of the best things that could’ve happened.

It pushed me to learn more, to work harder, and to keep showing up even when the results weren’t immediate.

It gave me the space to grow into the the blogger I needed to be in order to be ready for this “yes.”

If I had gotten it back then, I know I wouldn’t have appreciated it as much as I do now.

Isn’t it funny how life works?

We want things on our timeline, but more often than not, life has its own timing and that timing usually ends up being better.

Waiting is hard, detours are frustrating, and rejection is painful, but those seasons are often what prepare us for the opportunities that are meant for us.

So while I know this is a very “blogger” kind of milestone, the lesson is universal…

Often times the things we hope for don’t happen right away, but that doesn’t mean they’re not coming.

And when they do, the joy is that much sweeter.

1. EASY DECORATING TIP OF THE WEEK: When styling a surface, like an entry table or sideboard, start with one large item that serves as the anchor piece – then style smaller items in relation to it. Anchor pieces are items such as a mirror, artwork, a lamp (or two), or a large decorative item.

Why this works: An anchor piece provides structure to a vignette on these types of surfaces and gives your eye a starting point and makes the overall display look intentional. Without it, smaller items can look scattered or cluttered.

2. DID YOU KNOW: Walnuts aren’t just for eating. Did you know that rubbing one over scratches on wood furniture can help disguise them? It’s due to the natural oils in the nut that seep into the wood and make the marks much less noticeable.

3. FAVORITE RECENT PURCHASE: I looked everywhere for something that felt both fresh and personal for my guest bathroom. This is exactly what I wanted and adds such a classic finishing touch!

4. LOVELY, GRACIOUS LIVING AND BEYOND: Simple living leads to less stress and goes hand-in-hand with gracious living. One small way to simplify your life is to have a go-to outfit formula that you can easily reach for every morning. Something like a favorite pair of pants and a rotating set of tops will remove “decision fatigue” while still keeping your look polished.

5. READER QUESTION OF THE WEEK: How do I determine the best size chandelier to go above my dining table? See #10 for the answer!

6. WEEKLY AWESOME FINDS: September’s most popular finds for your home – if you missed them the first time around, here’s your chance to check them out!

  • You loved this cookware and now that I’ve been using it myself for several weeks, I can attest to how amazing it is.
  • Details matter and you guys have been loving these for a couple of months now. They made such a difference on my foyer console.
  • Speaking of my foyer console table – it was a hit with you in September.
  • Lots of you are getting ready for entertaining season and gifting season. This covered charcuterie board is a great find.

7. WEARABLE STYLE: These are the pieces that topped the list in September—classic styles worth a second look.

8. HOME HACK: Take advantage of a deep cabinet by adding several tension rods (place vertically, one in the front and one in the back) to hold cookie sheets and cooling racks upright. They will be so much easier to access than piled in a stack in the drawer under your oven.

9. FAVORITE STYLING MOMENT: With so many things still packed away and construction all around me at the moment, it’s nice to have a little slice of calm and a little touch of fall. You can see, from the image above, that I pulled together a couple of items that I could get access to and paired them with a new cachepot for a simple vignette on my kitchen counter.

10. ANSWER TO READER QUESTION (#5): To keep thing proportionally correct, a good rule of thumb is that the diameter of the fixture to be about half to two-thirds the width of your table. For example, if your table is 40 inches wide, look for a fixture that’s roughly 20–27 inches across. Then, hang it so the bottom of the chandelier is 30–34 inches above the tabletop. That height keeps it low enough to feel connected to the table, but high enough that no one bumps their head.

1. OCTOBER BUCKET LIST: A new month calls for cozy plans! Here are a few simple ways to soak up the new month:

  • Go pumpkin picking at a pick-your-own farm.
  • Bake something pumpkin like bread, pie, or cookies.
  • Take a drive to see the fall foliage.
  • Have a cozy movie night with a spooky classic. (Hocus Pocus is a fav in our house!)

2. COZY TIP OF THE WEEK: Don’t be afraid to mix fake florals with real greenery. The combination of the two makes arrangements look fuller, last longer, and still feel fresh.

3. LITTLE THINGS I’M LOVING:

4. FROM MY KITCHEN TO YOURS: Today is National Pumpkin Spice Day so to celebrate, whip up a batch of my pumpkin pie cookies. They’ve got all the cozy flavors of classic pumpkin pie, but in fun handheld form!

6. UPDATING MY WARDROBE:

  • I’m going to be wearing this cozy cardigan and pants sweater set all winter long.
  • Pair this sweater with a pair of jeans and you’re ready for the pumpkin patch.
  • Neutral plaid flannel pajama set…yes please!!! They come in regular, tall, & petite!
  • I was sold on these jeans when I read in the description, “All Day Stretch”.

7. MAKE THIS WITH ME: You might have more candy laying around your house this month because of Halloween, so why not give it a cozy home. These DIY candy jars are simple to make, just spray paint thrifted ceramic houses white, hot glue them to the tops of glass jars, and fill with your favorite sweets.

8. OVER ON THE ‘GRAM: I swapped out our cotton sheets for flannel ones this week, officially declaring it flannel season in our house. But here’s something I didn’t know until followers pointed it out from the reel…the pattern on a top sheet is supposed to face down! That way, when you fold it over, the pattern actually shows. How did I never know this?!

9. WEEKLY MOTIVATIONAL QUOTE:

“You can’t be brave if you’ve only had wonderful things happen to you.”

mary tyler moore

10. PLANNING AHEAD TO THE HOLIDAYS: When it comes to Christmas decorating, it’s easy to get swept up in all the new things hitting the shelves (I know from experience). But knowing what’s actually worth buying and what you can skip makes decorating less stressful and more meaningful.

Whisk 1 cup vegetable oil, 1 cup sugar, 1 cup brown sugar, 2/3 cup water, 4 eggs, and 1 (15-oz) can pumpkin. In another bowl, mix 3 1/2 cups flour, 2 tsp baking soda, 1 tsp baking powder, 1 tsp salt, 1 tsp cinnamon, 1 tsp ginger, 1/2 tsp cloves, 1/2 tsp nutmeg, 1/2 tsp allspice. Stir dry into wet until just combined. Divide into pans. Bake 50–60 minutes until a toothpick comes out clean. Cool for 10 minutes, then transfer to a rack. Enjoy!

10. THE LAST WORD: Add another layer of fall coziness by lighting candles, diffusing essential oils, or fall spices and fruits on the stove. Each one fills your home with a seasonal fragrance, making it feel warm and inviting.

ANSWER TO #7: October’s beautiful flowers are marigolds and cosmos. And the birthstones are opal and tourmaline.
