When to Decorate for Christmas: The Best Time to Deck the Halls
Shop This Post
Wondering when to decorate for Christmas? Find the best time to deck the halls, from traditional start dates to tips for creating a festive home on your own timeline.

One of the most debatable questions in the home decor world is, “When is the right time to decorate for Christmas?”
It’s right up there with, “How many throw pillows should you have on your couch?”
Now I know I start holiday planning and decorating well ahead of most people.
Every October without fail, while carving pumpkins and sneaking Reese’s from our candy stash, I’m secretly daydreaming about where the garland will go and how soon I can justify putting up the Christmas tree.
By the time Halloween rolls around, I’m ready to deck the halls with boughs of holly.
Some might call it too early.
I like to think of it as being enthusiastically prepared.
And honestly, isn’t that what the holidays are all about…finding joy in the little things and stretching the season out as long as possible?
I’d much rather spend extra weeks enjoying twinkle lights than waiting around for a date circled on the calendar.
Of course, not everyone agrees and that’s ok.
Some hold fast to the tradition of decorating the weekend after Thanksgiving, others insist on December 1st, and traditionalists won’t let a single ornament out of the box until Advent officially begins.
So, who’s right?
Well, that depends on who you ask.
But here’s the good news, when it comes to decorating for Christmas, there are no hard and fast rules.
The “right time” is simply the time that feels best for you, your family, and your home.
Let’s discuss!
When to Decorate for the Holidays
When it comes to the holidays, the question of when to decorate is almost as personal as how you decorate.
Here are a few of the most popular times people deck the halls…
After Thanksgiving
One of the most popular times to decorate is the weekend after Thanksgiving.
Once the turkey leftovers are packed away and Black Friday shopping is done (or avoided entirely as I do), many families use that long weekend to change their homes from fall to festive.
It’s practical, you’ve got extra time off, helping hands are around, and the shift from pumpkins to pine feels natural.
Plus, if you’re someone who wants to soak in every possible moment of the season, starting right after Thanksgiving gives you a full month of twinkle lights and cozy nights by the tree.
December 1st
For others, Christmas decorations don’t make their appearance until December 1st.
There’s something satisfying about flipping the calendar to a new month and letting that be the official start of the season.
It’s a tidy tradition…fall had its moment, November was for gratitude and turkey, and December is for all things merry and bright.
This timeline also pairs perfectly with Advent calendars and holiday countdowns, making December one big festive celebration from start to finish.

Advent Sunday
In more traditional homes, the timing of Christmas decorations is tied to Advent, which begins on the fourth Sunday before Christmas.
Many families mark this day by bringing out the first touches of the season like an Advent wreath or candles and then layering in more decorations as the weeks go by.
This approach creates a slower, more meaningful buildup to Christmas and ties the decorating process back to the faith and traditions that inspire the holiday in the first place.

When it Feels Right to You
And then there’s my personal favorite option, decorate when it feels right for you.
Maybe that means sprinkling in a few Christmas decorations in early November because you just can’t resist.
Or maybe it means holding off until mid-December because you want to keep the season short and sweet.
There’s no one “correct” date circled on the calendar.
It’s about what makes your home feel the most joyful, cozy, and festive.
After all, these decorations are for you and your family to enjoy.

Why It’s Fun to Start Christmas Decorating Early
There’s something magical about sneaking Christmas decor into your home before the season officially begins.
Starting early doesn’t just mean more weeks with the tree lit up (though that’s definitely a perk), I think it also makes the whole holiday season feel less rushed.
When you start in early November, you can ease into the season without the pressure of cramming all your decorating, shopping, and baking into just a few short weeks.
It gives you space to enjoy the process, maybe even spreading it out over a couple of weekends instead of tackling it all in one exhausting day.
And to be honest, nothing makes folding laundry in November a little cheerier than glancing over at a twinkling garland or catching the scent of a Christmas candle.
Decorating early also lets you double up on the cozy factor.
The days are getting shorter, the weather’s turning colder, and those first hints of holiday glow can make evenings at home feel extra special.
For me, it’s less about rushing the season and more about creating little bits of joy that help carry us through the darker, busier months ahead.

Why Waiting Can be Wonderful Too
As tempting as it is to dive headfirst into Christmas the second Halloween ends, there’s also something really special about waiting.
Holding off until Thanksgiving is over, or even until December, can make the season feel more magical because it doesn’t stretch on too long.
Instead of weeks and weeks of holiday overload, you get a concentrated burst of Christmas cheer that feels exciting from start to finish.
Waiting also gives each season its own moment.
By the time you finally bring out the ornaments, there’s a sense of anticipation and joy that only comes from not rushing into things.
It’s like waiting to open presents, the build-up is half the fun!
There is a practical reason, too.
If you’re a fan of fresh greenery, holding off until December means your garland, wreaths, and tree will look their best all the way through Christmas morning.
Helpful Tips for Deciding When to Decorate
- Check Your Calendar: If December is shaping up to be packed with holiday parties, shopping trips, school concerts, and family gatherings, consider starting earlier so you can enjoy the decorating process without feeling rushed.
- Decorate When You Have Time: Sometimes the “right” time has less to do with tradition and more to do with your schedule. If you know you’ll be traveling in December or hosting guests right after Thanksgiving, work your decorating around those events.
- Do it in Layers: You don’t have to do everything all at once. Try easing into the season by starting with twinkle lights, candles, or a cozy wreath in November. Then, add your bigger pieces like the Christmas tree or mantel garland closer to December.
- Do What Feels Right: At the end of the day, there are no hard rules. If putting up your tree the day after Halloween makes you happy, go for it. If waiting until December 15th feels more special, that’s perfect too. The “right” time is the one that brings the most joy and coziness to your home.
Frequently Asked Questions

Not at all! Many people start in early November, especially if they want more time to enjoy their decorations.
When do most people decorate for Christmas?
In the United States, the weekend after Thanksgiving is the most popular time.
How long should Christmas decorations stay up?
Traditionally, until January 6th (Epiphany), but many pack things away on New Year’s Day. Again, no rules here. I actually put our decorations away the day after Christmas.

I love that Susan!
I used to always wait until after Thanksgiving, because we host the whole family at our house for Thanksgiving. Then it was always stressful to get everything put away and Christmas put up in time to really enjoy it. A few years ago, I decided I was going to go ahead and do Christmas decorations before Thanksgiving. Everyone enjoyed it. Now I go ahead and decorate for Christmas early, but I leave Thanksgiving tablescapes.
