After years of decorating our home with neutral colors for Christmas, I was so excited to add a little color this year.

Not just any color, but that classic Merry Christmas red.

My red holiday decorations that hadn’t seen the light of day in a really long time, finally made their way out of storage.

Red ornaments, kitchen linens, ribbons, Santa mugs, and a few other favorite pieces instantly gave me those cozy nostalgic feelings that quite honestly, I hadn’t felt in our Christmas decor in a long time.

That was really the guiding light I used to decorate our home for the holidays this year.

I wanted to bring back that classic Christmas feeling with pops of red, without it being bright and over the top.

Our kitchen felt like the perfect place to start.

Adding a few red accents here not only changed how the space looked, but how it felt too.

So, I’m sharing a few of my favorite red cottage Christmas decorating ideas that will bring that same cozy, holiday charm into your own home.

Let’s decorate!

Simple is Key to Adding Red Christmas Decorations to a Cottage Kitchen

When it comes to decorating with red, a little goes a long way especially in a cottage style kitchen.

Instead of filling every corner with bright color, I focus on small touches that easily blend with the rest of our home’s neutral color scheme.

Red and white ticking stripe curtains above the kitchen sink, a few vintage ornaments in a bowl, or red ribbon tied in a bow can make your kitchen feel festive without going overboard.

These little details draw the eye and create warmth, but still let the charm of the kitchen itself shine through.

Think of it like this…you don’t want your kitchen to scream Santa’s workshop.

The decorations should be more of a gentle holiday whisper.

Things to Remember

  • Start small. Dish towels, ribbons, or mugs make a bigger impact than you might think.
  • Mix in neutrals. Red feels richer and more balanced when paired with creamy whites and warm woods.
  • Think in layers. Add pops of red through textiles, fresh greenery, and accents rather than one large statement piece.
  • Let it feel lived in. Cottage style is about comfort and character, not perfection. Mismatch adds charm.
  • Repeat the color. A few touches of red throughout your kitchen helps the space feel cohesive.

Remember Functionality When Decorating Your Kitchen

It’s easy to get carried away when you’re decorating your home for the Christmas season, but don’t forget that the kitchen still needs to function.

Instead of cluttering every surface, I try to decorate with intention.

I choose pieces that are both beautiful and useful.

For instance, red mixing bowls that double as serving dishes, a cookie jar for storing cookies, or a stack of pretty linens that are ready for holiday baking.

Keeping your counters clear and decor purposeful, helps your kitchen feel cozy and lived-in without getting in the way of everyday tasks.

Red Apples Aren’t Just for Your Fall Decorations

Incorporate red apples into a simple garland for rustic charm for Christmas time.

Who says apples have to disappear once autumn ends?

Their deep red color feels just as festive at Christmas time as it does in the fall.

I tucked a few faux red apples into a simple evergreen garland on our open kitchen shelf.

I love the rustic charm they brought to this space.

It’s a simple touch, but adds a great mix of color and coziness.

Apples are one of those timeless, inexpensive accents that pair beautifully with greenery and wood tones, which makes them perfect in a cottage Christmas kitchen.

COZY TIP: Don’t stop with apples! Fresh or faux pears, pomegranates, cranberries, and oranges also work beautifully in Christmas decor.

Swap Your Kitchen Towels

An easy and inexpensive way to add Christmas cheer to your kitchen is by swapping out your dish towels.

It’s literally the simplest change, but it instantly freshens up the kitchen and can tie your whole color palette together.

I hung red striped towels on our hanging pegs below our open kitchen shelf to complement the pops of red throughout our kitchen.

They add that cozy, classic cottage feel without being overly themed.

I also like to drape one over the oven handle and keep a few neatly folded by the sink.

  • Napkins
  • Pot Holders & Oven Mitts
  • Aprons
  • Chair Cushions or Seat Pads

Tie Ribbon to Anything & Everything

Red velvet ribbon tied to a simple wreath on the back of kitchen counter stools.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned over the years as a home decorator, it’s that ribbon can make anything look festive.

It’s a great way to add Christmas charm to your kitchen, and you can never really go overboard with it.

Red velvet ribbon was by go-to this year.

I used it to tie small wreaths to the backs of our kitchen counter stools.

This single detail really made our kitchen feel a little more dressed up for the holidays.

The soft texture of the velvet added warmth, and the red color ties in with the rest of my cottage Christmas decor.

Display Santa Mugs or Other Christmas Collections

Scrubbed pine china hutch decorated for Christmas time with santa mugs, greenery, and red flowers.

Santa mugs are so very nostalgic.

So if you have a collection of Santa mugs, get them out of the cabinet and display them proudly!

Line them up on an open shelf in your china hutch, group a few together on a tray beside your coffee maker, or fill one with candy canes.

They add personality and playfulness to the kitchen while still feeling timeless and cozy.

And if Santa mugs aren’t your thing, you can still use this idea with other Christmas collections like cookie tins, holiday plates, or vintage cookie cutters.

Collections have a way of telling your home’s story, and Christmas is the perfect time to let those cherished pieces shine.

Consider Updating Your Curtains for the Holidays

Cozy cottage style kitchen decorated with simple and inexpensive Christmas decorations.

Now I know this one might seem unexpected, but curtains can completely change the feel of your kitchen for Christmas.

Swapping out linens or adding greenery might be a no-brainer, the right curtains can bring just as much warmth and coziness to the space.

I swapped the curtain above our kitchen sink for a pair of red ticking stripe cafe curtains, and I was amazed at how such a small change transformed the look of the room.

If you don’t want to invest in new curtains (mine were less than $23 for two panels), you could also make your own cafe curtains using kitchen towels, hang wreaths on your windows, or drape a garland above your windows for a really simple seasonal update.

Decorate With Natural Elements Like Red Berries

Red berries are simple, timeless, and add that cheerful pop of red that is so classic this time of year.

Tuck a few real or faux sprigs into evergreen garlands, simple wreaths, or a bit of greenery in small vases for just the right amount of Christmas color and texture.

And the best part is that you don’t need many.

A few stems here and there go a long way in creating that cozy, collected cottage feel.

COZY TIP: Mix red berries with other natural elements like pine cones, cedar clippings, or dried oranges for a layered, organic look.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I decorate my kitchen for Christmas without making it feel cluttered?
Keep your decorations simple and purposeful. Focus on areas that naturally draw the eye like open shelves, the sink area, or your stove, and add just a few festive touches. Think greenery, kitchen towels, ribbon, or a small collection of mugs. Functional decor always keeps things from feeling overwhelming.

How do I add red to my kitchen without it feeling too bold?
Use red in small doses! A ribbon here, a towel there, a sprig of berries, or a few ornaments tucked into greenery is enough to make your kitchen feel festive without overpowering your neutral palette.

What colors pair well with red in a cottage kitchen?
Red looks beautiful with soft neutrals like cream, warm white, taupe, natural woods, brass, and evergreen. These colors help tone down the brightness of red and keep the overall look cozy and classic.

What are some inexpensive ways to decorate a kitchen for Christmas?
Use what you already have. Kitchen towels, ribbon, greenery from your yard, faux fruit, mugs, cookie tins, or red cookware can transform your kitchen without buying anything new.

How can I decorate a small kitchen for Christmas?
In a small space, think vertical instead of horizontal. Add a simple garland above a window or shelf, hang a wreath on a cabinet door, switch out towels, and display a few festive mugs. Small, little touches make a big impact without taking up counter space.

What’s the best way to make a kitchen feel cozy for Christmas?
Layer in warm textures, twinkle lights, and natural materials. Add a small lamp to the counter, light a seasonal candle, swap in cozy linens, and incorporate greenery.

How can I add red Christmas decor to my kitchen if I love a neutral color scheme?
Keep it subtle with velvet ribbon, berries, or one patterned towel can be enough to bring in the holiday cheer while staying true to your love of neutrals.

  1. Beautiful touches as usual. I just can’t get myself to try red even though each summer I tell myself I’m going to try it this year. It looks beautiful with the subtle touches you’ve added. I think I could do that!

A bit off subject, but what color are your kitchen cabinets? My kitchen is quite small and all white at the moment, but I’m wanting to paint at least the bottom cabinets another color and I think the color you’ve used would work well in my space. TIA!
