Why You’ll Want to Decorate With Ribbon for Christmas
Decorating with ribbon during the holidays is more than just a great way to add color and texture.
It’s a way to bring warmth, elegance, and a personalized touch to your home.
Ribbon can completely transform a space, elevating even the simplest decor into something that feels festive and thoughtfully curated.
I’ve been known to tie ribbon on just about anything…as long as it isn’t moving! Well, Eleanor may have been subjected to my craziness a time or two.
Adding ribbon is one of the quickest ways to give new life to classic holiday pieces like wreaths, garlands, and trees.

But, I think my favorite aspect of ribbon lies in its versatility.
It can be shaped, layered, and arranged for any aesthetic, from a rustic look to a more luxurious, refined style.
You can drape ribbons in soft, cascading lengths for a whimsical effect, tie them into bows for a pop of charm, or layer different textures and widths to create visual interest and depth in your decor.
And because it’s available in a wide variety of colors, patterns, and materials it’s easy to find ribbon that complements any color scheme or decor style.
If you’re looking to save a little money this Christmas, ribbon is also an affordable answer to adding a high-end look to your holiday decorating.
It has a big impact with a small cost, whether you use a little or a lot, making it ideal for decorating on a budget.
What Type of Ribbon is Right for My Holiday Decor
Choosing the right ribbon for your holiday decor is all about finding materials, colors, and textures that reflect your personal style and the look you want to create.
With so many varieties available, from classic satin and velvet to rustic burlap and plaid, there’s a ribbon for literally every home and aesthetic.
Here’s some ideas to help you pick the perfect ribbon to match your style.
Just don’t forget that it’s completely ok to mix & match styles, it’s one of my favorite ways to decorate!
If your home has a traditional or classic look, consider rich velvet ribbon or satin ribbon in timeless holiday colors like deep traditional red, greens, and golds.
These ribbons have a smooth texture and refined finish that bring elegance to your decor.
I personally love satin ribbons (you’ll notice a lot it in our decorations this holiday season) for their beauty and ease of use.
For a modern and minimalist style choose understated ribbons in neutral colors like ivory, silver, or soft gray and choose materials with clean lines, such as grosgrain or silk.
Metallic ribbons in silver or champagne tones also work well, adding a festive touch without overwhelming the minimalist aesthetic.
If your style leans rustic or farmhouse natural materials like burlap, jute, linen, or plaid ribbons are perfect.
These ribbons bring a down-to-earth, cozy vibe to your holiday decor and pair well with natural elements like pine cones, fresh greenery, and wooden accents.
And for those of you that love a vintage inspired look, consider ribbons in muted jewel tones or rich burgundy and forest green, with patterns like block print or lace for an antique feel.

Tips for Choosing the Perfect Christmas Ribbon
- Choose Coordinating Ribbon: For a balanced look, aim for 3 different ribbons that complement each other in color and style. Start with one solid color ribbon that acts as an anchor and foundation. Then, add two patterned ribbons like plaid, stripe, or gingham. This combination of ribbon lets you create a layered effect that feels polished.
- Opt for Varying Widths: When it comes to ribbon, varying the widths throughout your decorations creates visual interest and makes each one stand out.
- Consider Your Color Palette: Think about the colors you’re already using in your holiday decor and select ribbons that complement them.
- Mix Textures for Depth: Ribbons come in a wide variety of textures (velvet, satin, burlap, linen). Incorporating different textures within your three ribbon selection will add depth and a dynamic, layered effect to your decor.
What about wire-edged ribbon?
Wired edge ribbon is a popular choice for holiday decorating because it holds its shape which can make it great for creating structured bows and polished loops that stay put. However, I’ll admit that wired ribbon isn’t my personal favorite (so we won’t be talking much about it in this blog post). I prefer a more relaxed, floppy bow that adds a touch of softness to my decor. Non-wired ribbon gives a slightly undone, cozy look that I just love. So, if you enjoy a casual, effortless vibe like me, a non-wired ribbon
is the way to go!
Where to Find Affordable Ribbon for Christmas Decor
Finding the right ribbon doesn’t have to break the bank, and there are plenty of places to find beautiful options at an affordable price.
You might be surprised to learn that my go-to ribbon resource is Amazon.
They offer a wide variety of ribbon styles, patterns, and colors in longer lengths, which is perfect when you’re using the ribbon for multiple spaces throughout your home.
Michael’s, Hobby Lobby, The Dollar Store, Etsy or your local craft store are also fantastic options for Christmas ribbon.
Etsy is where I found the Noel printed ribbon that I’ve used in our Christmas decorations the past 4-5 years.
Don’t forget to save your ribbon once the holidays are over so that you can use it year after year!

PRO TIP: If your Christmas ribbon from previous seasons has a few wrinkles, a hair straightener can be your best friend! Gently run the straightener over the ribbon on a low heat setting to smooth out any creases. This trick works especially well for wider, non-wired ribbon, giving it a fresh, clean look without needing to replace it.

Ribbon on the Christmas Tree
Adding ribbon to your Christmas tree is an easy way to elevate its look.
One of my favorite ways to use ribbon is by tying bows on individual branches. This method is simple yet impactful, creating a classic, polished look.

Tie bows in various spots around the tree, spacing them evenly (as possible) for a balanced look.
I like to mix different ribbon widths or textures for added dimension and interest on the tree.
Another way to incorporate ribbon on your Christmas tree is by wrapping it around the tree.
Start at the top and work your way down, gently tucking the ribbon into the branches as you go for a cascading, spiral effect.
You can also use ribbon to create a tree topper.
Gather a long length of ribbon and tie it into an oversized bow at the top of your tree. Let the ends cascade down the sides for a dramatic effect.
Can I use ribbon to hang Christmas ornaments?
Yes, ditch the boring ornament hook! I think using ribbon to hang Christmas ornaments is a much cuter way to display them. Choose a ribbon that complements your decor and cut it to your desired lengths. Thread the ribbon through the ornament’s hook, tying it into a simple knot or bow, then drape the ribbon over the tree branches.

Use Simple Ribbon to Hang Artwork
Ribbons can turn everyday artwork or framed photos into something extra special for the holidays.
To hang the artwork on a mirror in our sitting room, we simply attached a length of ribbon to the top of the art frame and then hung it from the top of the mirror frame with a small nail.

I just love how it adds a pop of color and makes the artwork feel a little more festive…don’t you think?!

Hang Garlands With Festive Ribbon
For a charming twist on traditional garland hanging, use a wide ribbon as the hanger.
You can drape garlands across fireplace mantels, doorways, banisters, or peg hooks, then tie ribbons to secure each end or at intervals along the length of the garland.

Adding a bow or loose knot at each tie point gives the garland a soft, romantic feel and makes it feel more like a statement piece in the room.
For example, the orange garland hanging in our kitchen adds warmth to the space, but to make it stand out a little more I used a wide, burgundy gingham ribbon tied in floppy bows to secure it.

The ribbon not only holds the garland in place but also brings in a pop of seasonal color to an otherwise neutral spot.

PRO TIP: Play with ribbon colors that contrast with the greenery, like gold or reds, to make your decorations stand out.
Tie on Lamps
An easy way to add a festive touch to your decor is to tie a small bow on your light fixtures.
Have you done this before?
If not, take a length of ribbon and tie it in a bow around the base of the lamp’s neck. That’s it!
This little detail is perfect for spaces where you want a touch of Christmas without going overboard.

Add Christmas Ribbon to Wreaths
Christmas wreaths are a versatile holiday decoration that can easily add festive cheer to any area of your home.
While the front door is the most common place to hang them, think about other ways to use them like indoors.
A beautiful way to display smaller wreaths is by hanging them from the backs of kitchen or dining room chairs.
It amazes me how doing this in our own kitchen changes the entire look and feel of the space!
Using a length of ribbon, secure each wreath by tying a bow or knot at the top and around the chair.

Wreaths can also be placed in windows, over mirrors, on cabinet doors, peg rails, or on interior doors to bring a bit of greenery into every room.
Tie Ribbon on Anything & Everything
Ribbon can be tied on just about anything and everything for the Christmas season!
Your imagination is your only limitation.
A simple bow tied with holiday ribbon can transform everyday items into something special for the holidays.

Here are a few ideas…
- Vases & Candle Holders: Add a small bow around the base of your vases or candle holders.
- Framed Photos or Mirrors: Tie a ribbon around the corner of frames or mirrors.
- Cabinet & Drawer Pulls: Wrap ribbon around cabinet handles, drawer pulls, or even around door knobs.
- Glass Jars or Treat Containers: Tie bows around jars filled with holiday treats or ingredients.
- Kitchen Utensils: Tie a quick bow around wooden spoons, spatulas, or serving utensils.
- Christmas Presents: Use ribbon to create beautiful bows on your holiday gifts.
These little festive details are fun to create, instantly brighten up any room, and can be easily removed after Christmas which makes it a simple way to spread holiday cheer all throughout your home.

How to Make a Decorative Bow With Ribbon
Here’s my step-by-step tutorial on how to create a cozy, relaxed, floppy bow…
(You can also check out this Instagram reel for a short video tutorial on how I tie ribbon into simple bows.)
Step One: Choose Your Ribbon and Length
The first step is selecting your favorite ribbon and cutting the right length for wherever you’re using it.
For a standard bow with long tails, about 60 to 72 inches is usually a good length, but you can adjust this depending on how large you want your bow to be.
Step Two: Create the First Loop
Hold the ribbon in your hands, leaving a long tail on one side. Create a loop by crossing the longer tail over the shorter piece.
This initial loop is similar to the starting point when tying your shoelaces.
Step Three: Make the Second Loop
With the loop you just created, use the longer tail to form another loop, just like you did before.
Cross this new loop over the first loop to form an “X” shape with the ribbon.
Step Four: Tuck & Pull
Now, take the new loop that you just created and tuck it under the first loop.
Pull it through the gap where the loops cross, just as you would when tying your laces.
Step Five: Tighten the Bow
Gently pull on both loops to tighten the bow. Adjust the loops and tails to make them even.
Step Six: Trim the Tails
Finally, trim the end of the ribbon tails to your desired length.
Cut the ribbon ends in a “V” shape for a more polished finish.
