Cozy and Nostalgic Christmas Home Tour 2024
sharing is caring!
Welcome to our Christmas home tour 2024! You’ll find cozy decor, nostalgic touches, and festive inspiration to make your home feel magical this holiday season.

The most wonderful time of the year is here, and I couldn’t be more excited to share Christmas around our home.
Every year, I love to open our doors to you for the holidays and share how we’ve transformed our spaces to reflect the magic and warmth of the season.
It always amazes me how Christmas decor can instantly make a home feel more inviting, nostalgic, and filled with love.
This year, I focused on creating a cozy and timeless atmosphere, blending vintage inspired pieces with sentimental touches and plenty of warmth with natural elements and lots (by lots, I mean lots) of ribbon.
I also took a slight step away from my typical neutral decor and embraced a bit more color this holiday season.
Subtle pops of burgundy and greens are sprinkled throughout, adding festive charm while still maintaining the cozy, timeless feel I love.
These touches, paired with natural textures like fresh greenery, wooden accents, and soft textiles create a layered look that feels not only elegant but inviting too.
As we journey through each room, I hope you’ll find inspiration for creating your own cozy retreat this holiday season.
So without further ado, let’s get this Christmas tour started!

Christmas Decorations in the Kitchen
We’ll start this home tour in the kitchen because it’s the heart of our home and the first space you step into when you walk through the door.
Whichever season I’m decorating our kitchen for, I like to make sure it remains functional, while also adding just the right amount of charm and seasonal touches.
For the holidays, that means incorporating festive decor that doesn’t get in the way of everyday tasks like cooking or baking but still brings a sense of the holidays to the space.

Open Kitchen Shelves
On our open kitchen shelves I wanted to keep things simple but meaningful.
I hung framed recipes on the wall, each embellished with a delicate satin burgundy bow for a festive touch.

Below the recipes, I stacked white vintage dishes to create a timeless and classic display.

On the pegs beneath the open shelf, I draped a dried orange garland tied with gingham ribbon, with charming white Santa mugs hanging in between.
I kept our glass canisters on the counter below the open kitchen shelf and just swapped the mugs in the canisters for vintage green transferware ones for a little pop of color.

How can I make a dried orange garland?
All you need are fresh oranges, a sharp knife or mandolin, parchment paper, and twine or ribbon for stringing. Slice the oranges evenly, dry them in the oven at a low temperature, and then string them together. I’ve got the full step-by-step instructions and helpful tips in this blog post to help you make your own dried orange garland.
Kitchen Countertops
I honestly didn’t add much to our kitchen counters for the holidays.
One of the easiest updates I made was tying a bow around the lamp we already had on the counter.
It instantly added festive cheer without any extra effort at all.

Next to the stove, I arranged two ironstone pitchers filled with our everyday cooking utensils, which not only keeps them within easy reach, but also adds that timeless, collected feel.

To complete the vignette, I placed a small piece of vintage inspired holiday art.
These small, thoughtful details prove that you don’t need to go overboard to create a space that feels like the holidays.
pro Tip
- Designate specific zones for everything you use daily in the kitchen, such as a tray for oils and spices near the stove or a basket for mail and keys. Regularly evaluate what’s on your countertops and store away anything you don’t use frequently. Adding decorative but functional items, like a cake stand or a utensil holder, can also keep things tidy while adding a little decoration. A clean countertop not only maximizes your workspace but also allows your holiday decorations to shine.
Kitchen Hutch
This was the first Christmas with this hutch in our kitchen, and I had so much fun decorating it for the holidays!
Again, I wanted to keep the look simple yet inviting, so I started by arranging Christmas village pieces on one of the shelves, mixing in some seasonal touches like bottle brush trees and old & new kitchen linens.

To add warmth, I placed a couple of woven baskets, old books, and a few glass jars filled with cinnamon sticks, cloves, and dried oranges.
One of my favorite additions this year was the apron I made for the bottom of the hutch.
I stumbled upon the perfect fabric with a beautiful, festive pattern at the fabric store and hot glued it (because I have no idea how to sew) into a simple apron to give the hutch a cozy, homemade touch.
You might have noticed the curtain above the kitchen sink matches the hutch apron! Yes, I made both!

I just love how it adds a little extra charm and a sense of warmth to the space.
On the top of the kitchen hutch, I draped a garland of greenery with a cream paper tree garland woven throughout, and then a satin ribbon tied in the middle.
The combination of vintage finds, greenery, and holiday accents makes this space feel nostalgic, yet still very much a part of our home today.

Kitchen Chairs
Finally, just like I have the past couple of years, I hung small evergreen wreaths with burgundy ribbon on the backs of our kitchen chairs.
The deep red ribbon adds another pop of color to the kitchen and ties in beautifully with the other holiday accents throughout the space.

I love how the little wreaths bring a cozy, natural feel to the chairs, making the kitchen feel even more inviting for holiday meals and gatherings.

Tips & Tricks for Christmas Decorating in the Kitchen
These simple yet thoughtful ideas will help you create a cozy, inviting kitchen that’s ready for the holiday season in no time…
- Keep it Simple & Functional: Prioritize practicality by adding small, festive touches like a ribbon on an existing lamp or a seasonal vase without overcrowding surfaces.
- Use Everyday Items in a Creative Way: Transform regular kitchen items into holiday decor like placing cooking utensils in seasonal containers like vintage pitchers, or adding greenery or pinecones.
- Incorporate Greenery: Use garlands, wreaths, or vases filled with fresh or faux greenery to bring a natural Christmas vibe to your cooking space.
- Create a Hot Cocoa or Cookie Bar: Set up a station with mugs, marshmallows, candy canes, and treats to create a cozy and interactive holiday experience. You can see the hot chocolate bar I created in this blog post.
- Hang Seasonal Dish Towels: Swap out everyday kitchen towels for holiday ones with festive prints like plaid or block print.
- Add Holiday Art: Decorate walls with Christmas themed art or framed holiday recipes to personalize your kitchen.
- Incorporate Vintage Pieces: Display old mixing bowls, cookie cutters, or holiday mugs for a nostalgic, charming feel.
- Use Ribbons: Tie ribbons to literally anything and everything to add a festive touch.
- Keep Countertops Clutter Free: Choose statement pieces like a small holiday centerpiece or a festive tray to keep surfaces clean and functional.

Bathroom Christmas Decor
The next stop around our home is our downstairs bathroom which is located right off of the kitchen.

I don’t normally decorate our bathrooms for the holidays, but this year I couldn’t resist adding a few Christmas touches.
When I had a leftover eucalyptus garland that I hadn’t used elsewhere in our home, I decided it would be perfect for the bathroom.

I draped the garland across the mirror, which brought in a fresh, natural element that I thought was so pretty.
I also swapped out our regular white towels for green ones.
And you can’t update a bathroom without a holiday scented candle to fill the space with the warm, inviting fragrance of cinnamon and pine.

Decorations in the Sitting Room for the Holidays
Between our kitchen and living room is the sitting room.
It’s an oddly shaped room and essentially serves as a walkthrough, but that doesn’t mean it can’t have a few festive touches to make it feel special during the holidays, right?!

Since it’s a smaller space, I like to keep the decor minimal, but cozy.
I basically added Christmas embellishments to what was already in the room.
To start, I swapped out the pillows on the swivel chairs for some that have a festive, seasonal feel.

The candle sconces on the wall behind the chairs got a little update with simple greenery and ribbon.

But the highlight of the sitting room is the cozy pellet stove and the fireplace mantel.

Here I layered three evergreen garlands to create a full and lush look.
To add a bit of sparkle and texture, I wove in a mercury glass ornament garland, a ceramic snowman garland, fairy lights, and then tied bows using gingham ribbon on either end of the garland.

I placed a long candelabra on the mantel for ambiance and hung knit scalloped edge stockings to complete the look.

Tips & Tricks for Holiday Decorating in an Oddly Shaped Room
If you have an oddly shaped room in your home similar to our sitting room, here are a few tips and tricks on how to decorate it for Christmastime…
- Emphasize Focal Points: Highlight key areas like a mantel, a window, or a corner that naturally draws attention.
- Work With the Space: Instead of fighting the shape, embrace it! Use smaller decor pieces like tabletop trees, lanterns, or candles that fit comfortably within the room’s layout without overwhelming it.
- Keep It Minimal: Less is often more. Choose a few impactful decorations rather than overcrowding the space.
- Use Vertical Space: Make use of walls with wreaths, hanging garlands, or sconces decorated with ribbon and greenery.
- Focus on Cozy Textures: Swap out pillows, throw blankets, or rugs for ones in warm, cozy textures.
- Stick to a Cohesive Palette: A consistent color scheme helps unify the space and makes it feel more intentional, even if the layout is unconventional.

Christmas Decorations in the Living Room
The final stop on this Christmas home tour is our living room, the coziest space in our home and where we gather most during the holiday season.

Living Room Dresser
Right between the sitting room and the living room is a wooden dresser that serves as a natural transition point between the two spaces.
For the holidays, I dressed it up with a few simple yet festive touches that tie into the rest of our home’s Christmas decor.

To bring continuity, I hung a vintage inspired print on the mirror using the same burgundy satin ribbon featured in the kitchen, bathroom, and sitting room.
This small detail helps to unify the decor throughout the house.

On top of the dresser, I arranged a combination of honeycomb paper trees and bottle brush trees in varying heights and sizes. I think combining the different trees adds texture, nostalgia, and holiday charm.
And for a final little pop of color, I tied burgundy ribbon to one of the knobs on the dresser.

The Christmas Tree
No Christmas home tour is complete without showcasing the heart of the holiday decor, the Christmas tree!

When the kids were little we always had a real Christmas tree.
One of our favorite traditions was packing up the family, driving to a nearby Christmas tree farm, and spending the afternoon searching for the perfect evergreen.
The smell of fresh pine filling the house was magical, and the entire experience created some of our most cherished family memories.
But now that the kids are older, the thrill of cutting down a Christmas tree with their parents has diminished, so we’ve transitioned to using an artificial tree.

This is the second year we’ve displayed this artificial king noble fir Christmas tree, and I love it!
The tree is on the sparser side, which I actually prefer. It allows the ornaments to shine and creates a more open, airy feel.
I’ve decorated it very simply with new and old ornaments of all shapes & sizes along with loads of ribbon.
The twinkling lights and ornaments of our Christmas tree bring such a cozy warmth to the family room especially on those cold, dark days of December.

Living Room Couch
Just like in the sitting room, I swapped out the regular throw pillows for a mix of plush, textured pillows in shades of cream and green which tie in with the rest of our Christmas decor.

The cozy layers instantly make the sofa feel like the perfect place to curl up with a warm drink on a chilly winter evening.
To add a little more texture and pattern, I draped a quilt over the back of the sofa. The soft fabric brings an extra layer of warmth and visual interest to the space.

And after years of having the same artwork on the wall above the sofa, I decided it was time for a change.
This year, I swapped out the regular artwork for a beautiful Christmas Eve tapestry.
The rich colors and festive scene add a timeless, nostalgic touch to the room, completing the holiday look and making the living room feel even more special.

Bookshelves
When it came to decorating our bookshelves for the holidays, I wanted to keep the books as the focal point.
They’re such an important part of the room’s overall aesthetic, so I didn’t want to distract from them too much.
To add just a small amount of holiday charm, I placed a vintage soup tureen full of faux greenery on the top shelf of both ends of the bookshelf.

Tips & Tricks for Living Room Christmas Decorations
- Focus on Texture: Layer different textures to create a warm, inviting atmosphere.
- Add Meaningful Decor: Incorporate sentimental or personal items like family heirlooms, vintage ornaments, or framed holiday photos.
- Have a Focal Point: The Christmas tree is typically the centerpiece of the living room during the holidays. Keep the decor around it simple and complementary so it remains the star of the show.
- Balance Festive & Functional: Decorate in a way that enhances the space without overcrowding it.
- Embrace Nature: Add in natural elements like greenery, pine cones, dried oranges, or wreaths.
- Use Color Wisely: Stick to a color scheme to create cohesion.

Hi Liz! I actually made those curtains with fabric I found at Joann’s Fabric. I’ll add the link the fabric I used here: https://www.joann.com/p/beige-sylvan-cotton-canvas-fabric/19505296.html
P.S. I don’t know how to sew, I made them using hot glue!
Heidi, your home is lovely! The curtains above your kitchen sink really caught my eye and I’d appreciate learning where you got them. Thanks!
