Ever since I took down the paper garland I made for Valentine’s Day (if you don’t remember that you can see it in this post), this spot in our kitchen has felt so bare.

It’s funny how quickly you get used to those small seasonal touches that make a home feel festive and cozy.

With Easter just a couple of weeks away and spring slowly (and I mean slowly) making its arrival, I thought it was time to bring in a little bit of seasonal charm.

I got to work on a new spring DIY with a character that could not be more charming or nostalgic in my opinion…Peter Rabbit!

For me, Peter Rabbit always brings back childhood memories of my mom reading Beatrix Potter stories to my sister and I before bed.

Peter Rabbit was one of our favorite characters along with Hunca Munca, Mrs. Tiggy Winkle, and Jemima Puddle-Duck.

Do you remember those too?!

There was something comforting about those stories, each one filled with woodland adventures, tiny teacups, and mischievous little animals in aprons and bonnets.

So, to add a little spring decor to our kitchen along with some cozy nostalgia, I created this DIY Easter garland.

It’s simple, inexpensive, and easy for you to create with a free printable garland template that you can download, print, and hang in your home.

Let’s hop to it and get crafting!

Step One: Print & Cut Out the Pennants

The first step is to download and print the floral pennant template.

Email subscribers can do this in our Freebies vault (make sure to use the password that was emailed to you). If you’re not an email subscriber, you can sign up here.

Once you’ve printed the templates on cardstock, carefully cut out each individual pennant using sharp scissors.

Step Two: Add Peter Rabbit Embellishments

Next, you’ll be adding circle shapes to each pennant to make them stand out.

Print and cut out the circle Peter Rabbit templates from the download onto card stock.

Now, take a square foam sticker and attach it to center of the circle outline on the front of the pennant.

Take one of the circle cutouts, center it on the circle outline on the pennant, and press it down lightly to ensure the circle sticks securely.

Step Three: Assemble the Garland

Now it’s time to assemble your garland!

Take a piece of string or bakers twine (the length will depend on how long you want your garland to be) and lay it out flat.

Make sure to leave about 12″ on other end of the string for tying a small loop for hanging.

Before attaching the pennants, cut out two small triangles at the top of each one. This will help ensure that when you fold over the top flap, no part of the back of the pennant will show from the front.

Next, create a fold along the dotted line at the top of each pennant. This fold will help secure the pennant to the string and give it a clean, finished look.

After folding, attach each pennant to the string by taping the folded flap over the string.

You’ll want to leave some space between each pennant to allow them to hang freely.

Continue folding and attaching all your pennants along the string until you’ve reached your desired length.

Step Four: Finish the Spring Garland & Tie Ribbon on Both Ends

Once all of your pennants are attached, it’s time to finish your garland.

Take the twine and tie it into a loop on either end, creating a secure space for hanging.

For an extra bit of charm, I tied yellow gingham ribbon around both ends of the garland but feel free to use whatever ribbon you like or that matches your spring color palette.

Tips
  • For clean and precise cuts, make sure to use a sharp pair of scissors. This will help you avoid jagged edges and will give your garland a neat, professional look.
  • Experiment with the spacing between the pennants for different effects. Closer spacing will give you a fuller look, while wider spacing creates a more airy feel.

How long will it take me to make this DIY paper garland?

The project is a fairly quick one!

Depending on your skill level and how detailed you want to get, it should take about one hour to complete, and that includes cutting, assembling, and decorating.

FAQs

Cardstock works best because it’s sturdy and holds its shape nicely, especially when hanging. But if you don’t have any on hand, regular printer paper will work too. Just know that the garland will be a little more flimsy.

It definitely helps to have a color printer to get the full effect of the printable template design. But, if you don’t have one, you can print in black and white for a vintage feel.

No, you don’t have to use the foam stickers if you don’t want to. The foam stickers are simply a way to add dimension and make the gingham circles stand out a little more on the pennants. If you want a simpler look or don’t have foam stickers on hand, you can always glue or tape the circles directly onto the pennants.

How long should my garland be?

The length of your garland depends on where you plan to hang it and how much space you want to fill.

To get the exact length you want, measure the area where you plan to hang the garland and add about 12″ of extra length on both ends to create loops in the string for hanging.
