The kitchen is the heart of the home and during the holidays, it definitely earns that title.

It’s where some of the coziest Christmas memories are made from baking cookies to sipping hot cocoa while the snow falls outside.

There’s flour on the counter, Christmas music playing in the background, and maybe a few too many “taste tests” happening (for quality control, of course).

But decorating your kitchen for Christmas doesn’t have to mean turning it into Santa’s workshop or spending a fortune.

You honestly don’t need much to make your kitchen feel festive.

With a few intentional touches, some greenery, and a little creativity, you can create a cooking space that’s warm, inviting, and merry without cluttering your surfaces.

Because your kitchen needs to work just as much as it needs to look pretty.

The goal here isn’t perfection, it’s about simple decorations that make you smile every time you walk in.

So before you break out the tinsel, let’s dive into easy Christmas kitchen decor ideas that will bring all the cozy holiday charm without breaking the bank or adding any stress to your to-do list.

Things to Keep in Mind Before You Start Decorating Your Kitchen for Christmas

Through the years I’ve seen a lot of beautifully decorated kitchens for the holidays on Pinterest and Instagram.

You’ve probably seen them too.

You know the ones where every square inch is covered in garland, twinkle lights, and a small army of ceramic Santas.

And while they are lovely, I can’t help but wonder, where do they actually cook?

Or put down a cutting board?

Or make dinner without knocking over a reindeer?

As much as I love a beautifully decorated space, I love a functional one even more.

Your kitchen should work just as well as it looks, especially during the holidays when it becomes the busiest room in the house.

Keep these things in mind before you start decking your halls…

Remember Practicality

You still need space to chop veggies and roll out dough.

Stick to decor that adds charm without taking over your countertops like hanging wreaths, garlands, or decorations on shelves.

Use Everyday Items as Decor

Truly one of my favorite ways to decorate!

You don’t need to buy anything special, just use what’s already in your kitchen.

Display wooden spoons in a crock with a sprig of pine, fill a cake stand with cookies, or drape a festive tea towel over your oven handle.

I find that the simplest, most useful things are often the most beautiful.

Embrace What You Already Have

Before adding anything new, look around your home.

A spool of ribbon, a few extra ornaments, or leftover greenery can easily make their way into the kitchen for free.

In the Kitchen, Less is More

A bowl of fresh oranges, a simple evergreen wreath, or a candle near the sink can bring plenty of Christmas cheer without making your kitchen feel chaotic.

Add Warmth

You shouldn’t be worried about creating a Pinterest worthy holiday kitchen.

Your Christmas kitchen decorations should be more about making your home feel inviting for the people who actually live there.

tips to remember

  • Keep it practical.
  • Use everyday items as decor.
  • Embrace what you already have.
  • Less is more in the kitchen.
  • Add warmth.

1. Swap Everyday Towels for Holiday Ones

Christmas dish towel hanging on oven handle for functional holiday decor in the kitchen.

One of the easiest ways to make your kitchen feel festive is by simply switching out your dish towels.

Look for timeless patterns like gingham, stripes, or embroidered trees that complement your everyday style and that you’ll love pulling out year after year.

2. Bring Your Dishes Out of the Cabinet

If you’ve been saving those Christmas dishes for “special occasions,” this is your friendly reminder…this is the special occasion!

Don’t let them hide behind cabinet doors all season long.

Bringing your festive plates, platters, and serving bowls out into the open instantly adds coziness to your kitchen.

Stack them on open shelving, display them in a hutch, or set a few out on your counters to use every day.

COZY TIP: If you have a favorite Christmas plate or platter, lean it against your backsplash or set it on a small stand. It doubles as decor and keeps your prettiest pieces front and center where they can be enjoyed.

3. Hang Small Wreaths on Kitchen Chairs

Simple Christmas decoration in the kitchen with small wreaths and ribbon.

A small detail but you’ll be surprised at the big impact.

Hanging mini wreaths on the backs of your kitchen chairs adds Christmas charm and ties the kitchen together without taking up any counter space.

I like to use small faux evergreen wreaths tied to our counter stools with ribbon that matches our Christmas color scheme.

A few other ways to use small wreaths in the kitchen..

  • Hang them on cabinet doors using ribbon (just make sure they don’t block the handles or swing when you open them).
  • Layer one over a kitchen window, either alone or with a linen curtain.
  • Set a small wreath flat under a candle or bowl on your countertop or kitchen island for a quick holiday centerpiece.

4. Use Candlelight Wherever You Can

Flameless candles on an open kitchen shelf for cozy kitchen Christmas decorations.

Nothing says cozy quite like candlelight at Christmastime.

The soft flicker instantly makes your kitchen feel warm and welcoming even if there’s a sink full of dishes nearby.

Place flameless candles on open shelves, windowsills, or anywhere you can’t have an open flame.

I like to set a timer so they automatically turn on as the sun goes down.

If you’re using real candles, stick to safe spots like the kitchen table or island, away from cabinets or anything that might accidentally catch fire.

5. Frame Holiday Recipes

Framed recipe is ready for hanging on your kitchen wall or propping on your kitchen island.

Instead of keeping your favorite recipes tucked away in a drawer or recipe box, display them as part of your home decor.

It’s practical and sentimental.

Prop up a handwritten recipe from your mother or grandmother on a stand or frame a page from a cookbook or a recipe from a magazine.

Not only does it add a personal touch, but it also makes your kitchen feel nostalgic which is something that’s hard to buy in a store.

6. Display Christmas Cookbooks

Another fun (and functional) way to decorate your kitchen for the holidays is by putting your Christmas cookbooks on display.

They add instant color, warmth, and personality…plus, you’ll be more likely to actually use them when they’re within reach.

Stack a few on your counter, open shelving, or a sideboard.

I even like to leave one open to a favorite holiday recipe for that styled-but-lived-in look.

If you don’t have dedicated Christmas cookbooks, use any that have covers with rich reds, deep greens, or vintage illustrations.

7. Create a Hot Cocoa Station

Ultimate hot chocolate bar with a homemade hot chocolate recipe.

Creating a hot chocolate bar in your kitchen is an easy (and adorable if I do say so myself) way to add warmth for the holidays.

You don’t need much space to do this.

Just a small tray, cake stand, or corner of your countertop will do.

Gather your essentials like cocoa mix, marshmallows, candy canes, and a few favorite mugs.

Arrange everything neatly in jars or canisters, and add a spoon for stirring.

8. Display Your Favorite Christmas Mugs

DIY framed recipes for kitchen wall art in the heart of the home.

If there’s ever a season to show off your mug collection, it’s Christmas!

From vintage finds to the ones your kids made in art class, holiday mugs add personality to your kitchen.

And they’re practical, which makes this one of the easiest decorating ideas of all.

COZY TIP: Don’t just display your mugs, use them! Tuck them into large glass jars filled with sugar and flour for easy scooping.

9. Print and Hang Free Christmas Art

Christmas art in a gold frame and gingham mat on the kitchen countertop for the holiday season.

Decorate your kitchen for free with Christmas printable art.

I have plenty of Christmas designs (in this post) that anyone can download, print at home, and then pop into a frame.

You can hang them on the wall, lean them against your backsplash, or clip them onto a clipboard or cutting board for a casual look.

My favorite part is that when the season’s over, you can swap them out for something new with no storage required.

10. Swap Out Your Soaps

Trade your regular dish and hand soap for scents like peppermint, pine, or cranberry to make every single day feel festive.

11. Display Fresh Fruit on the Counter

Basket of apples on kitchen island countertop for quick and easy holiday decor.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again.

The simplest decorations are the prettiest, and fresh fruit is proof of that.

A bowl of oranges, pomegranates, or red and green apples adds natural color and festive charm to your kitchen without feeling overdone.

Arrange fruit in a wooden dough bowl, vintage colander, or woven basket on your kitchen countertop.

You can even mix in a few sprigs of greenery, pine cones, or cinnamon sticks for extra texture and holiday fragrance.

COZY TIP: Try studding oranges with whole cloves for an old-fashioned touch that smells amazing.

12. Fill Jars With Holiday Treats

Use glass jars or canisters in different shapes and sizes to showcase holiday treats like candy canes, peppermints candies, gumdrops, or homemade cookies.

If you want a more natural look (which is what I wanted here) try mixed nuts, dried oranges, or cinnamon sticks.

Arrange a few jars together on a tray, shelf, or in a corner of your countertop for fun display that doesn’t take up much space.

13. Make a Christmas Simmer Pot

Winter stovetop potpourri recipe to add coziness to your home through your sense of smell.

If there’s one thing that can make your kitchen feel like Christmas faster than anything else, it’s the smell.

simmering pot (sometimes called a stovetop potpourri) is one of the coziest ways to fill your home with that warm holiday scent we all know and love.

All you need is a pot, some water, and a few simple ingredients like orange slices, cinnamon sticks, cranberries, and rosemary.

Let it simmer gently on the stove, and before long your kitchen will smell absolutely incredible!

COZY TIP: Old oranges or apples work perfectly in a simmer pot. You can also transfer your simmering pot to a small slow cooker to keep it going all day long without worrying about the stove.

14. Incorporate Dried Oranges

Vintage style Christmas decor for the most wonderful time of the year.

There’s something timeless and cozy about dried oranges around the holiday season.

Their warm color, subtle scent, and classic charm make any kitchen feel festive.

String them together into garlands, make ornaments, tuck a few into a wreath, or place in a jar for a pop of natural color.

You can even tie one to a gift tag or around the neck of a jar or bottle for a handmade touch.

15. Display a Christmas Collection

Use simple ribbon to create a simple bow for holiday cheer in garlands throughout your home.

Collections tell stories and Christmas is the perfect time to show off the ones you have and love.

Grouping your favorites together brings personality to your kitchen whether it’s vintage cookie cutters, holiday tins, or gingerbread houses.

Arrange them in a vignette on a tray, in a hutch, or along open shelving.

The key is to keep it simple.

Stick to one theme or color palette so it feels collected and not cluttered.

16. Elevate Your Kitchen Decorations With Ribbon

Christmas wreath tied to wooden kitchen chair in a cozy cottage kitchen.

When in doubt, just add ribbon.

Seriously!

It’s such a great way to elevate your kitchen without buying a single new decoration.

A spool or two can really go a long way.

Where to Tie Ribbon in the Kitchen:

  • Tie it to small wreaths on chairs.
  • Wrap around glass jars filled with treats, cocoa mix, or baking staples.
  • Around utensil crocks or pitchers.
  • Loop through cookie cutters and hung as simple ornaments or garland.
  • Tie around candles or the base of a small lamp.
  • Around a stack of cookbooks.

17. Bake Your Favorite Christmas Cookies

Christmas monster cookie recipe for holiday comfort food.

Is it even the holidays without the scent of cookies baking in the oven filling your home?!

It’s cozy, nostalgic, and puts everyone in the holiday spirit even if there’s flour on the floor and powdered sugar floating through the air.

Whip up a batch of your family’s favorites whether that’s sugar cookies, peanut butter blossoms, or monster cookies that disappear faster than you can bake them.

18. Display Baked Goods

Cozy gingerbread house cake using a Nordic Ware bundt pan.

Make your kitchen feel like Christmas by displaying homemade treats like a gingerbread house bundt cake, a stack of cookies, or a pie cooling on the counter.

Place them on a cake stand, a wooden board, or under a glass cloche to make them look extra special.

Your kitchen will smell incredible and feel warm and welcoming.

19. Add a Little Christmas Greenery

Christmas garland with pine cones on a kitchen shelf with an ironstone plate.

Nothing brings life to a kitchen like fresh or faux greenery.

It adds texture, color, and that classic Christmas scent (if using real).

Just a few sprigs can make your kitchen feel fresh and festive.

Drape garland over your windows, along open shelving, or across the top of your range hood.

You can even tuck small bits of greenery into pitchers, mugs, or jars.

20. Tabletop Christmas Tree

Maybe you want that magical Christmas tree feeling in your kitchen, but you don’t have the space.

A small tabletop tree can be a great solution.

Tuck one into a crock, pitcher, or vintage tin and place it on your counter, island, or kitchen table.

Keep it simple with twinkle lights, dried orange slices, tiny ornaments, or leave it bare for a natural look.

21. Put Out a Bowl of Christmas Potpourri

Homemade Christmas gift idea for hostess gifts or neighbor gifts.

A bowl of homemade potpourri will bring warm fragrance to your kitchen (no simmering pot required).

Use a shallow wooden bowl or vintage dish and fill it with dried orange & apple slices, cinnamon sticks, cloves, star anise, and pine cones that have been mixed with essential oils.

It looks beautiful and gives off that cozy, spicy holiday scent every time you walk by.

Christmas Decor to Avoid in the Kitchen

Remember your kitchen shouldn’t just look pretty for the holidays, it needs to function properly too.

Hey friend! What can I help you find?

Search our entire site!

Here are a few things I recommend skipping when decorating your kitchen…

  • Anything glittery or shedding. It might look magical at first, until you’re finding glitter in your food three weeks later.
  • Oversized decor that eats up counter space. If you have to move it every time you cook, it’s not worth it.
  • Scented candles near food prep areas. This actually doesn’t bother me, but if you have a sensitive nose, competing smells might be too much.
  • Real greenery too close to the stove. It dries out quickly and becomes a fire hazard very quickly.
  • Electrical decor near the sink. Keep lights, cords, and plug-in decor safely away from water.
  • Excessive themed items. You don’t need Santa salt shakers, reindeer spoon rests, and an elf butter dish. (Unless it’s your thing!)

Christmas Kitchen Decorating Frequently Asked Questions

How can I decorate my kitchen for Christmas on a budget?
Start with what you already have! Add ribbon, a few sprigs of greenery, and swap your dish towels or soap for something festive. Reuse items like jars, baskets, and cutting boards to create cozy vignettes without spending a dime.

What colors work best for Christmas kitchen decor?
Classic red and green will always feel festive, but don’t be afraid to lean into your home’s everyday color scheme. Neutrals, gold, copper, and forest green all create a warm and timeless holiday look that blends beautifully with your existing decor.

How do I decorate my kitchen without cluttering it?
Focus on vertical and non-work surfaces like shelves, backs of chairs, or windows. Hang mini wreaths, display a few mugs, or add garland over the sink instead of filling up your counters.

What should I avoid when decorating my kitchen for Christmas?
Skip anything glittery or oversized that gets in the way of cooking. Avoid real greenery near the stove or open flames, and keep candles and lights away from water or food prep areas. (Make sure to check out the “Christmas Decor to Avoid” section above for more tips!)

When should I start decorating my kitchen for Christmas?
There’s no right or wrong time! Some people start the weekend of Thanksgiving while others wait until after December 1st.

What are some easy Christmas kitchen decor ideas I can do in an afternoon?
