Do you have something that you always feel the need to stock up on?

For me, it’s frozen corn, frozen peas, and baker’s twine.

Why frozen corn and peas?

I honestly couldn’t tell you why.

I think I just feel better knowing they’re in the freezer for whenever a chicken pot pie craving hits or a last-minute dinner needs some sort of vegetable.

Now baker’s twine, I do use quite a bit during the holiday season for gift wrapping and tags, but I always end up with extra rolls tucked away in my ribbon drawer that seem to collect year after year.

So instead of letting them sit there until next Christmas, I decided to turn them into something cozy.

And that’s how these twine Christmas trees came to be.

They’re quick to make, require just a few materials, and add a nostalgic touch to your holiday decor.

If you love simple DIY Christmas projects like me, I think you’re going to love these (and the fact that you can finally use up some of the twine you’ve been collecting).

What You’ll Love About This Holiday Craft:

  • They’re budget-friendly and use inexpensive materials.
  • The red and white twine adds a classic Christmas look.
  • Twine trees are lightweight and easy to move around when decorating.
  • Each one turns out a little different, which makes them feel cozy and extra special!

Supplies You’ll Need to Make a DIY Cone Christmas Tree

To make your own twine trees, you’ll want to grab…

The supplies you'll need to make DIY twine trees include styrofoam cones, baker's twine, hot glue, scissors, and star shaped cookie cutters.
  • White Styrofoam Cone: This forms the base of the tree and come in a variety of sizes. I used 4.75″ x 17.9″, 3.8″ x 11.9″, and 3.7″ x 8.9″ styrofoam cones for this DIY.
  • Red & White Bakers Twine: Gives the tree its classic, nostalgic Christmas look but you can use any color twine you like. To cover all 3 cones, I used about 1 1/4 rolls of twine (each roll was 656 feet long).
  • Hot Glue Gun & Glue Sticks: To secure the twine as you wrap and to attach the star toppers.
  • Small Star Shaped Cookie Cutters: The perfect tree topper and adds a subtle vintage touch.
  • Scissors: For trimming the twine.

01

Attach the Twine

Start at the bottom of your styrofoam cone. Add a small bead of hot glue around the base of the cone and press a single strand of the baker’s twine into the glue to secure it.

02

Wrap the Styrofoam Cone

Wrap the twine around the cone, working your way upward. Keep the twine snug and somewhat close together as you go, adding a tiny dab of hot glue every so often to keep it from slipping.

COZY TIP: There’s no need to stress about perfection here, uneven wrapping makes the tree look even cozier.

03

Secure the Top

Once you reach the top of the cone, trim the twine, and secure the end with a little hot glue.

04

Add the Star Topper

To finish, hot glue a small star shaped cookie cutter to the top of each tree. I love how the metal star give the tree a vintage feel.

Helpful Tips

  • Start at the bottom of the cone and work your way up. It makes wrapping the twine easier.
  • Pull the twine just enough so it lays flat against the cone without digging in.
  • Don’t stress about perfect spacing. The imperfections add charm and make the trees feel handmade.
  • Mix cone sizes for a collected look. Using a few different heights will make your display more interesting.

DIY Bakers Twine Christmas Tree Frequently Asked Questions

What kind of bakers twine works best?
Classic cotton twine works best because it wraps smoothly and holds its shape well. While red and white gives a traditional Christmas look, you can use any color baker’s twine you like to match your decor.

Can I use different sizes of cones?
Yes! I used three different sized styrofoam cones to create a cozy Christmas vignette. Mixing different heights adds visual interest and will make your display feel more collected.

Do I have to use cookie cutters for the stars?
Not at all. You can use wooden stars, metal star ornaments, or even skip the topper entirely.
