A few nights ago as I was scrolling Facebook Marketplace, I came across a vintage rattan bag with a stitched American flag across the side of it.

It stopped me mid-scroll.

The bag was cute, darling, charming…all the adjectives that pass through my mind when I see something that screams cozy cottage.

Unfortunately, it was also sold.

Dang you FB Marketplace, why are you showing me cute things that are already sold?!

Sigh.

And as with most things I fall in love with, once I saw it, I couldn’t stop thinking about it.

But the more I thought about that Americana bag, the more I realized I probably had everything I needed to recreate the look myself.

A woven rattan bag from my closet and a small vintage-inspired flag leftover from a recent DIY were all I needed to create a similar look.

Now here’s the funny part…what started as inspiration from a sold out Marketplace find, quickly turned into an easy patriotic decorating project.

I just love when that happens!

The door basket I created took less than 10 minutes to make, cost next to nothing because I used items I already owned, and adds the perfect touch of cozy Americana charm to our home.

So, if you’re looking for an easy way to decorate for summer don’t search Facebook Marketplace.

Instead, I’ll show you how to recreate the look yourself using a few simple items you probably already have in your closets or craft stash.

Why You’ll Love This DIY Americana Door Basket

  • Literally takes less than 10 minutes to make.
  • Uses simple, affordable materials. Everything I used to make this came from my craft closet.
  • Easy to customize with different baskets, flowers, or ribbons.
  • Can be displayed throughout the entire summer season.

If Door Baskets Aren’t Your Thing…

I get it! Wreaths might be more your style. This 5 minute summer wreath is simple, affordable, and adds just the right amount of red, white, and blue to your front door.

Supplies You’ll Need to Make a Summer Door Basket

Position the small American flag where you want to adhere it on the hanging bag.

To make your own patriotic basket you’ll need the following materials…

  • Woven Rattan Bag or Basket: The base for this craft project. I used a floppy woven bag to create a relaxed cottage look but you could use a more structured rattan basket if you like.
  • Faux Hydrangeas: You’ll tuck these inside your basket for that classic summer cottage feel. I used white but you could also use blue hydrangeas or a combination of both.
  • 4″x6″ Vintage-Inspired American Flag: I had a couple of coffee stained flags leftover from the flag garland I made a couple of weeks ago, so I used one of those for this DIY.
  • Hot Glue Gun and Glue Sticks: To secure the flag to the basket.
  • White Satin Ribbon: To hang the basket from your door or you can just tie it to the basket for decoration.
  • Door Hook or Wreath Hanger: For hanging your basket on any door.

How to Make a Quick & Easy DIY Patriotic Door Basket in Less Than 10 Minutes

I promise you this craft project is easy!

Here’s exactly how I made this door basket…

Use a hot glue to attach the American flag to the front of the hanging door basket.

Step One: Start by positioning the small American flag horizontally across the front of your rattan bag. Once you’re happy with the placement, use a hot glue gun to secure the flag to the basket.

Fill your DIY Patriotic hanging door basket with faux white hydrangeas for a classic Americana look.

Step Two: Insert the faux hydrangeas into the opening of the basket, arranging them how you like. Don’t worry about making them look perfect. This project looks best when the flowers feel loose and natural.

Tie white satin ribbon at the top of the hanging basket for a more whimsy.

Step Three: Cut a generous length of white ribbon and tie it around the basket handles. Leave the ribbon slightly loose and relaxed and let the tails drape naturally for a more cottage-inspired look.

Step Four: Hang your basket on an interior door using a wreath hanger or over-the-door hook. Fluff the flowers one more time, that’s it!

Helpful Tips

  • Choose a floppier basket as opposed to a more structured one for a relaxed cozy cottage look.
  • White hydrangeas keep the arrangement timeless and classic.
  • When using faux flowers, bend and shape the stems before arranging them to create a more natural appearance.
  • Vintage-inspired flags feel cozier than bright, modern flags.
  • Don’t overthink the ribbon. The more relaxed it looks, the better.
  • Because this basket uses faux florals and hot glue, you’ll want to keep it inside your home or in a covered entryway rather than hung in direct sun or rain.

So don’t worry if you don’t have faux white hydrangeas or a floppy bag, here are a few ideas to make it your own:

  • Swap the hydrangeas for other summer florals. Faux daisies, Queen Anne’s lace, chamomile, geraniums, delphinium, or wildflowers would all look beautiful.
  • Use a different basket. If you don’t have a woven rattan bag, you could also use a market basket, hanging wall basket, or a canvas tote bag.
  • Change up the ribbon. White ribbon keeps things classic, but red gingham, ticking stripe, or even a simple strip of torn fabric would add lots of charm.
  • Create a vintage look. Tea or coffee stain the flag before assembling the basket for an aged appearance.
  • Use real flowers from your garden. Fresh hydrangeas or other garden blooms can make the basket feel extra cozy. Just make sure there is a way to give them water inside the basket.
  • Skip the flag altogether. This hanging bag would still make great summer front door decor with just flowers and ribbon.
  • Coordinate with your home’s style. Choose flowers, ribbon, and basket colors that complement your home decor.

Frequently Asked Questions About This DIY Patriotic Door Basket

What kind of bag works best for a DIY patriotic door basket?
A rattan bag or wicker basket works best because the texture adds a natural, cottage charm that complements the hydrangeas perfectly.

Can I attach the flag to the bag any other way besides hot glue?
Hot glue is my go-to because it’s quick and holds well, but there are a few other ways to attach your flag depending on what you have on hand. Command strips or double-sided tape will work if you want something a little more temporary. If you know how to sew, you could also hand stitch the flag directly onto the bag. And if you’d rather skip the attachment altogether, simply tuck the flag stick down into the arrangement between the florals and let the flowers hold it in place naturally.

Can I use other faux flowers besides hydrangeas?
Hydrangeas are my personal favorite because they scream summer to me, but this project works with just about any faux florals you love. Faux geraniums, daisies, chamomile, or a mix of wildflowers would all look gorgeous with a patriotic flag. Just stick to red, white, and blue tones to keep the patriotic theme going.

How do I hang this patriotic door basket on my door?
The easiest option is to use an over-the-door wreath hanger. You can also hang the basket from a wreath hook (which is what I did) or door knob.

Can this door basket be hung outside?
I’d recommend keeping this one indoors or under a covered porch rather than hanging it in direct sunlight or rain. The hot glue can soften and release in high heat, and prolonged moisture isn’t great for faux florals or wicker either. If you have a protected entryway or covered front porch, you’re good to go, just avoid spots where it will get direct sun or get rained on.

What holidays can I use this door basket for?
Hang it up for Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, Labor Day, and quite honestly throughout the entire summer season. Its simple Americana style makes it feel timeless rather than holiday specific.
