I probably get the itch for fall decorations long before most people.

It’s not that I wish for summer to end or for fall to come any sooner, but sometime mid-July, I start to crave the coziness of autumn’s deeper colors and warmer textures.

Even if you’re not a huge fan of fall, you must admit that there is something inherently cozy and comforting about the season from the scents of cinnamon & apples to the sights of amber colors & worn metals.

But instead of jumping straight to the typical pumpkins and leaf garlands when I start decorating in August, I like to find more subtle and timeless ways to slowly incorporate the essence of fall into our home.

In this blog post, I’ll show how you can begin decorating for fall without the obvious fall decorations. Items like tarnished silver pieces, amber glass bottles, and wicker baskets can easily create an autumn-inspired atmosphere.

By focusing on these understated touches, you can achieve sophisticated fall decor that feels warm, inviting, and perfectly seasonal without relying on the more obvious fall decorations.

When to Decorate for Fall

This is one of the most popular questions when it comes to decorating your home for fall.

The answer…there is no “right” or “wrong” time.

It’s completely up to you and what feels best for your home and lifestyle.

Some people wait until the first official day of autumn or October 1st, while others begin incorporating fall touches as early as mid-August.

Personally, I like to start adding subtle elements as early as the beginning of August, gradually building up the cozy ambiance as the temperatures begin to drop.

Whatever you decide, decorate for fall when you feel inspiration strike.

It doesn’t matter if it’s August, September, or October!

The Foundation of Fall Decor

Before we dive into specific examples of subtle fall decorations, let’s first talk about setting the foundation. Or, the base upon which you will continue to grow your decor throughout the fall season.

The Three Base Elements:

  1. Neutral Color Palette
  2. Cozy Textures
  3. Seasonal Flowers & Foliage

Let’s break down each of these elements into a little more detail…

Neutral Color Palette

Neutral colors serve as the perfect backdrop for fall decor. They provide a versatile and timeless base.

A neutral color scheme with shades of cream, beige, and taupe create a cohesive aesthetic that complements the warm tones of fall, while also making it easier to swap out more colorful accents seasonally.

For instance, you can easily incorporate bright orange pumpkins, rich burgundy florals, or deep green throw blankets knowing that your neutral backdrop will support and highlight these seasonal touches.

Cozy Textures

Texture adds depth & interest to your decor. It’s the secret ingredient to a cozy home.

There are a million ways to add to your texture to your decor, but some easy examples are items like chunky knit blankets, soft wool throws, boucle pillows, and linen curtains.

Natural materials like wood, wicker, and marble are a great way to add a warm, rustic touch to your decor too.

pro Tip
  • Don’t be afraid to mix & match different materials like chunky knits, soft velvets, and woven baskets to create a rich, inviting atmosphere. Layering textures adds depth and warmth, giving your fall decorations a cozy feel.

Seasonal Flowers & Foliage

Why are seasonal flowers and foliage an essential fall element?

Because they are the pieces that will add a touch of nature to your decorations, and fall more than any other season is all about celebrating the beauty of nature.

Flowers and foliage are an easy way to bring the warm colors & textures of the outdoors in.

And here’s the thing…you don’t need to spend any money on these natural elements.

Simply gather what you have around you.

Think fallen leaves or branches, acorns, pine cones, wildflowers, or pampas grasses.

All of these things can be used as decorations on their own, or made into arrangements, fall wreaths, or other DIY projects.

Choose a Fall Color Scheme Instead of Decorating With a Theme

We already talked about having a neutral color scheme as the foundation for your fall decorations, however it’s also important to decide on the fall colors you’ll be decorating with instead of committing to a “theme”.

Will you be adding pops of reds, yellows, blues, greens, or purples to your decor?

Or will you stick with completely neutral colors?

I typically like to choose three colors that complement each other and work well with my neutral base.

By focusing on cohesive fall color schemes, it makes it very easy to find and incorporate various decor accents that enhance the overall look & feel of your space.

Examples of Fall Color Palettes

  • Deep Burgundy, Mustard Yellow, Forest Green
  • Burnt Orange, Cream, Chocolate Brown
  • Rust, Sage Green, Navy Blue
  • Plum, Gold, Ivory
  • Terracotta, Olive Green, Slate Gray
  • Cranberry, Pumpkin, Taupe
Fall color scheme examples include shades of red, yellow, orange, green, blue, and purples.

Warm Metals Like Tarnished Silver

Summer decorating is all about keeping the house feeling cool, but for fall, it’s all about making the house feel warm & cozy again.

One of the ways I like to begin adding warmth back into our decor is with metals like tarnished silver.

I added a silver teapot, goblets, and bowl to our kitchen hutch.

It’s got that well-loved look that complements the autumnal palette and is perfect for adding a touch of vintage charm to our kitchen decor.

Look for old silver trays, candlesticks, silverware, or bowls at your local thrift stores or antique shops. They are pretty common items to find when thrifting and they aren’t very expensive.

Tarnished silver isn’t the only warm metal that works great in fall décor…

  • Copper: It’s my other favorite fall metal to decorate with. Copper has a rich, warm tone that pairs beautifully with autumn colors.
  • Brass: Brass is huge this fall! It offers a timeless, classic appeal.
  • Gold: This classic metal is perfect for adding a touch of sophistication and warmth to your home decor.
  • Antique Pewter: Antique pewter combines a slightly darker, aged look with a warm undertone.

Amber Glass Bottles

Amber glass bottles are a great way to add rich, warm tones to your decor without screaming “Hey, I’m decorating for fall!”.

Vintage amber glass bottles are a great way to add warm fall colors to your decor.

Besides their beautiful, rich color they also add character and a sense of history to your decor.

Each amber glass bottle has its own unique shape and subtle imperfections which adds visual interest wherever you decide to place them.

I always like to think about what might have been inside the glass bottles, how the bottles once sat on the shelves of an old apothecary or drug store, and who might have bought the bottle and used it in their home.

What are amber glass bottles?

Amber glass bottles are containers made from glass that has been tinted with a rich, warm amber hue. This coloring is achieved by adding iron, sulfur, and carbon to the glass during production. Historically, amber glass bottles were commonly used for storing medicines, oils, and other substances that needed protection from light. The amber tint helps filter out harmful UV rays, preserving the contents inside and preventing spoilage or degradation.

Wicker Baskets

Baskets are a versatile and functional addition to your decor all year long, including fall.

Their natural texture and warm tones make them perfect for adding coziness to any space.

You can fill baskets with seasonal items like apples, pinecones, acorns, or small pumpkins and display them on your kitchen counter or dining room table.

Use them to store and display blankets and throw pillows in the living room, making it easy to grab a cozy layer when the temperature drops.

In the entryway, wicker baskets are great for organizing scarves, hats, and gloves, keeping your seasonal accessories organized and within reach.

Essentially, wicker baskets help declutter spaces while adding a touch of fall charm.

Place them on shelves or under tables to store books or magazines.

Their beauty and functionality make wicker baskets an important element in creating a welcoming and organized aesthetic.

Fall Scented Candles

If you want cozy fall vibes…burn a fall-scented candle.

It does the trick almost instantaneously.

Nothing evokes the feeling of autumn like the scent of spiced apples, cinnamon, warm vanilla, or pumpkin spice.

How can I make my home smell like fall without using traditional fall scented candles?

My favorite way to get the house smelling like fall without a candle is by simmering a pot of water with cinnamon sticks, cloves, and orange peels on the stove.

You can also make and display your own homemade potpourri.

Make homemade potpourri with pine cones and cinnamon sticks instead of burning a fall-scented candle.

Note: Don’t forget to decorate using all of your five senses, including the sense of smell. Fall scented candles not only enhance the visual appeal of your space but also fill it with the comforting aromas of autumn, making your home feel even more inviting and cozy.

Cozy Textiles

Textiles are essential for creating a warm and inviting fall atmosphere.

They add layers of comfort to your space, making it feel snug and welcoming as the weather cools.

Start with plush throw blankets.

Chunky knits and soft wools are perfect for draping over sofas and armchairs, inviting you to curl up and relax.

Throw pillows are another easy way to update your space without obvious fall decor.

Make your living room the coziest place with throw pillows and blankets.

To start decorating for fall, I like to use neutral pillow covers that have a little more texture to them like linen, boucle, flannel, or tweed to make the couch feel extra cozy.

These accent pillows are a great way to freshen up your couch or sofa for fall.

Don’t overlook your rugs and drapes too.

I know our house feels so much warmer with wool or cotton rugs on our wood floors.

And, updating your drapes from summer to fall is a simple way to refresh your space for the season.

I like to transition from lightweight, airy fabrics to richer, more textured ones.

Books & Cookbooks

Books and cookbooks are perfect for adding warmth and personality to your fall decor.

They not only serve a functional purpose but also enhance the cozy, inviting atmosphere of your home.

Start by styling your coffee tables, shelves, and side tables with stacks of books.

Vintage books can be the focal point of your fall decor.

I like to choose books with rich, autumnal covers or those that feature fall-inspired themes.

Classic novels, seasonal literature, and well-seasoned cookbooks can all contribute to that warm, lived-in feel.

Cookbooks are particularly fitting for the fall season.

I don’t know about you, but the cooler season means more cooking and baking in our house.
