Tips for Cooking & Baking With Strawberries
Working with fresh strawberries in the summer is definitely one of life’s little joys, but there are a few things to keep in mind to make the most of them in your recipes…
- Don’t wash until ready to use. Strawberries are like little sponges, they soak up moisture quickly. Wait to rinse them until just before using to keep them from getting mushy.
- Let them shine. When strawberries are in season, they don’t need much fuss. A sprinkle of sugar, a drizzle of honey, or a squeeze of lemon juice can enhance their flavor without overpowering it.
- Use a paring knife or straw to hull. To easily remove the green tops, use a small paring knife or poke a straw through the bottom of the berry to pop the hull out.
- Freeze extras. Have too many berries? Hull them, slice (if you want), then lay them flat on a baking sheet
to freeze before transferring to a freezer bag or airtight container. You can use them for a strawberry smoothie, strawberry scones, or strawberry muffins. - Macerate for extra sweetness. Toss sliced strawberries with a spoonful of granulated sugar and let them sit for 10–15 minutes. The sugar draws out the juices, creating a sweet syrup.
- Not just for dessert. Don’t forget, strawberries pair beautifully with savory flavors too! Try them in salads or on a charcuterie board.
Can I use frozen strawberries in these recipes?
Yes, for some of these recipes like sangria or mocktails, frozen strawberries work just fine.
They’re especially handy for drinks since they double as ice!
For recipes where texture matters, like the trifles or strawberries and whipped cream, fresh is always best.
