September is apple season.
The apple orchards around our home are now open for pick-your-own season, and the apples on the apple tree in our yard are ready for picking.
Mr. ERH picked some just yesterday!
There’s something about this time of year that makes apples feel like fall.
Or maybe it’s fall that feels like apples.
Either way, pumpkins get all the attention come October, but in September?
It’s all about the apple.
And I love it!
Apples are one of the most versatile fruits…sweet or tart, baked or fresh, in a pie or on a plate.
They can pretty much do it all.
Not to mention they look beautiful just sitting in a bowl, which as I’m sure you know, is basically my favorite kind of decorating.
Effortless and edible?
Um, yes please.
So, I’m rounding up a few of my favorite fall apple recipes and decorating ideas to help you embrace the fall season whether you’re picking apples at an orchard, your own backyard tree, or grabbing a bag from the grocery store (nope, there’s nothing wrong with that).
Let’s bring a little of that orchard charm inside this autumn!

Bowl of Apples

This is about as simple as fall decorating gets, but a pop of red always makes a statement.
Fill a rustic bowl, wooden dough bowl, or a vintage dish with fresh red (or green) apples and place it on your kitchen counter, dining room table, or entryway console.
Fall Simmer Pot

One of the easiest ways to make your home smell like fall is with a simmering pot.
Think of it as natural potpourri that bubbles away on the stove, filling your kitchen with the most inviting autumn scent.
For fall, add a sliced apple, an orange, a handful of cloves, a few cinnamon sticks, and a splash of vanilla to a pot of water.
Let it simmer gently on the stove, and before you know it, your whole home will smell amazing!
Dried Apple Slices

Dried slices of apple are one of those versatile natural decor elements for fall.
They’re beautiful strung as garlands, tucked into wreaths, or simply displayed in a jar.
Plus, they smell amazing while they dry.

Homemade Potpourri

Once you’ve made your dried apple slices, you can mix them into a batch of homemade potpourri.
It’s one of my favorite ways to make the house smell like a cozy autumn day without even turning on the oven.
All you need are your dried apple slices, dried orange slices, cinnamon sticks, whole cloves, pudka pods, star anise, and pine cones.
Mix everything together in a bowl, and just like that you’ve got a natural potpourri that looks as good as it smells.
Individual Apple Pies

If you’re craving apple pie but don’t want to bake a full one, this single-serve apple pie recipe hits the spot.
This apple shaped handheld pie is quick, cozy, and perfect as an after-school treat or dessert after dinner.
Fall Sangria

This sangria tastes like autumn in a glass.
Made with apple cider, fresh sliced apples, and a spoonful of apple butter (yup, apple butter!), it’s sweet, crisp, and super cozy.
It’s a great drink for any fall gathering because it warms you from the inside out.
More Creative Ways to Use Apples This Fall
Because you can never have too many apple ideas, here are a few more creative ways to bring this versatile fruit into your home…
- Apple Nachos: One of my kids favorite snacks when they were little! Layer apple slices on a plate and drizzle with caramel, then sprinkle with mini chocolate chips, nuts, or granola.
- Apple Centerpiece: Hollow out apples to use as mini vases for mums or tea light holders.
- Apple Pancakes or Waffles: Fold diced apples and cinnamon into batter for a cozy fall breakfast.
- Apple Place Cards: Tie a tag to the stem of each apple and use them at the table for fall gatherings.
- DIY Apple Wreath: Attach faux apples on a grapevine wreath base for an autumn decoration.
- Apple Galette: A rustic dessert that’s easier than pie but just as impressive.
- Apple & Cheese: Set out apples with cheddar, brie, or gouda for a simple appetizer.
