Why You’ll Love These Cinco de Mayo Flower Arrangements

Supplies You’ll Need to Make Mini Cinco de Mayo Flower Arrangements
The materials you’ll need to make a Cinco de Mayo centerpiece is simple, just fresh flowers in vibrant colors and a few tin cans from your pantry.
That’s all there is to it!
The Flowers

When choosing flowers for your Cinco de Mayo arrangements, you want to choose flowers in bold colors like red, yellow, purple, and orange.
These colors reflect the fun aesthetic of a Mexican fiesta!
You’ll also want to mix in a few different textures like florals with smooth petals, a few with spiky leaves, and maybe something a little wispy or feathery so the arrangements look more interesting.
These are the flowers I used that can easily be found at Trader Joe’s or in the florist section at your local grocery store…
- Chamomile
- Craspedia
- Gerber Daisy
- Veronica
- Ranunculas
- Pea Shoots
- Green Dragon Aster
- Purple Filler Flower
The amount of flowers you’ll need will depend on the amount of arrangements you make and the size of the cans.

The Tin Cans

One of my favorite things about this idea is how flexible it is, you can literally use whatever you have on hand.
Any size tin cans will work for these Cinco de Mayo decorations.
You can keep things simple with all the same size, or mix a few different size cans together for a more collected look.
I used a mix of small, medium, and large cans and grouped them together in the center of our island, and honestly, I love how it turned out.
It feels a little more relaxed and less “perfect,” which if you know me, is the look I’m always going for.
As for what to look for at the store, just think about the canned ingredients you’d normally use for a Cinco de Mayo meal.
They double as the perfect vessels for your arrangements.
A few options…
- Enchilada Sauce
- Chipotle Peppers
- Pinto or Navy Beans
- Hominy
- Canned Tomatoes
- Diced Peppers
- Refried Beans

Step One: Clean the Cans
Start by making sure your cans are clean and ready to use.
Before you do anything, remove the label (instructions on how to do that in step 2) so you can easily wash the inside.
Give each can a good rinse with warm, soapy water and let them dry completely.
Step Two: Carefully Remove the Labels (Without Ruining Them)
To reuse the labels, you’ll want to take them carefully off the cans.
You can try peeling them off, but they can tear pretty easily.
The method I found works the best is to take a utility knife and cut straight up the back of the label.
Once it’s cut, gently pull the label off and set it aside.
Step Three: Reattach the Labels
After your cans are clean and dry, it’s time to put the labels back on.
Wrap each label back around the can and secure it with a small piece of tape along the back seam.
It doesn’t have to be perfect, once the flowers are in, you won’t notice it at all.
Step Four: Add Water and Flowers
Fill each can with water, then start adding your flowers.
Mix different colors and textures as you go.
This is what gives the arrangements that fun, collected look without feeling too structured.

Step Five: Adjust as You Go
As you’re arranging, turn the can every so often to check all sides.
This helps you fill in any gaps and keeps the arrangement looking full from every angle.

Step Six: Style and Enjoy
Once your arrangements are done, group them together or spread them out.
Add them to your kitchen island or dining room table, anywhere that could use a touch of Cinco de Mayo!

Helpful Tips
- Don’t overthink the flowers. Grab what looks good at the store. The mix of colors matters more than the exact types of flowers.
- Mix heights for a fuller look. Cut some stems shorter and leave others taller so the arrangement feels a little more natural and less stiff.
- Keep it a little imperfect. These actually look better when they’re not perfectly arranged.
- Use what you already have. If you don’t have enough flowers, fill in with greenery from your yard or even mix in a few faux stems.
- Check all sides before calling it done. Give the can a quick turn as you arrange so it looks full from every angle.
- Change the water daily. Since these are small containers, the water can get cloudy quickly. A quick refresh helps your flowers last longer.
- Group instead of going big. A few smaller arrangements grouped together always feel more intentional than one large centerpiece.
