Now that Labor Day weekend is behind us, it is now socially acceptable to start decorating for fall…right?

Asking for a friend.

You know I’m just kidding because I started the fall decorating process in August!

I like to ease into the fall season slowly so by the time September rolls around, our home already feels a little cozier, even if the temperatures outside haven’t quite caught up yet.

I’ll start with the simple things like switching out pillow covers, simmering a pumpkin spice simmer pot on the stove, or bringing in a few dried hydrangea blooms.

Little by little, the layers add up and suddenly our home feels ready for crisp mornings and cozy evenings.

And that’s what I want to share with you in this post.

How you can create that cozy fall feeling in your home without spending a dime.

Nope, you don’t need to load up your shopping cart with seasonal decor you might find at the big box stores.

Tempting, I know from experience.

With a little creativity and some resourcefulness, you can bring the beauty of autumn into your home for free.

Yes, free.

From shopping your own home to using what nature generously gives us this time of year, there are countless ways to make your spaces feel warm and inviting on a budget.

In fact, I think those no-cost touches often end up being the most meaningful because they’re tied to your story and surroundings.

Can I really decorate for fall for free?

You might be asking yourself, “Is it really possible to decorate my home for fall without spending anything?”

And the answer is, 100% yes!

Decorating for free is all about a change in your perspective.

Instead of thinking about what you need to go out and buy, start looking at what you already have with fresh eyes.

Hey, that rhymed!

That plaid scarf tucked away in your closet? It can double as a table runner.

A stack of books with brown, red, tan, or green covers? Perfect for adding autumn color to a coffee table.

A basket sitting empty in the pantry? Fill it with pine cones or branches for a seasonal display.

Nature also does a lot of the heavy lifting this time of year.

Leaves, branches, hydrangeas, apples, acorns, pine cones…these are all “decorations” that cost nothing but bring a lot of autumn charm into your home.

When is the Best Time to Put up Fall Decorations

There’s really no right or wrong time to start decorating for fall, it’s more about when it feels right for you. Some people wait until the official start of autumn in late September, while others (like me!) begin adding touches in August so the season lasts a little longer.

Shop Your Home First

Before you think about adding anything new, take a look around the rooms you live in every day.

Often, the pieces you need to create that cozy fall feeling are right in front of you, it’s just a matter of seeing them in a new light.

Moving things from one room to another, styling them differently, or simply layering them with intention can completely change the atmosphere.

When you shop your home first, you not only save money, but you also give yourself the chance to enjoy what you already have in a fresh, seasonal way.

Decorate With Natural Elements

One of the easiest (and completely free) ways to bring fall into your home is to lean on the beauty of nature.

Autumn practically decorates for us.

The colors, textures, and shapes that appear outdoors this time of year can instantly make your home feel warm and inviting.

Bringing those natural elements inside not only creates a cozy seasonal aesthetic, but it also makes your home feel connected to the rhythms of the season.

But the best part of decorating with the help of Mother Nature?

It don’t cost a thing!

The outdoors provides endless options for decorating whether gathered from your yard, a nearby trail, or your own garden.

Natural Elements Great for Fall Decor

  • Colorful Fall Leaves
  • Pinecones or Acorns
  • Tree Branches or Twigs
  • Dried Flowers, Grasses, or Wheat
  • Apples, Pears, Pumpkins, or Gourds

And if you love changing your decor multiple times throughout the season like I do, printables make it easy to swap out art whenever you want a new look, mix and match designs, or even rotate them between rooms.

It’s a budget-friendly trick that makes your home feel fresh and cozy without requiring a trip to the store.

Cozy Up With Textiles

One of my favorite things to do when the weather starts to cool is to pull out the thicker, cozier fabrics that have been tucked away all summer.

Eleanor loves that too.

Free fall decor ideas include adding cozy throw pillows to your couch in the living room.

There’s just something about draping a heavier throw across the couch or layering a quilt at the foot of the bed that makes you feel snug as a bug.

Now, it’s important to note that you don’t need to run out and buy all new throw pillows and blankets to get that cozy autumn look.

Instead of purchasing brand-new pieces, try swapping out pillow covers.

They’re usually more affordable than throw pillows, and you can rotate them seasonally without taking up much storage space.

Another option is simply layering what you already own.

Bring that extra blanket out of the bedroom, fold a quilt at the end of the couch, or pile pillows together for an inviting look.

And when it comes to choosing textures, think about what feels cozy to you.

Soft flannels, nubby knits, boucle, and warm neutrals instantly create that sense of comfort I think we all crave in the fall.

Mix in patterns like a plaid, gingham, block print, or herringbone for extra character and texture.

More About me more fall decor

Simmer a Stovetop Potpourri

Decor is more than just what you experience with your eyes, it’s also about how a space feels and how it smells.

The right scent can transform a room just as much as a new pillow or wreath, and in the fall, nothing sets the mood like a cozy simmer pot simmering away on the stove.

Make your whole house smell amazing with this fall simmer pot recipe.

All you need is a pot of water and a few items you probably already have in your kitchen.

The beauty of a simmering pot is its flexibility.

You can use what you already have on hand and still create that unmistakable fall fragrance.

Try adding things like:

  • Apple Slices
  • Orange Slices
  • Cinnamon Sticks
  • Whole Cloves
  • Star Anise
  • Vanilla Extract

Let it simmer on low, and before long, your home will smell like an autumn afternoon.

So cozy!

Other Ways to Make Your Home Smell Like Fall

  • Candles – Light your favorite fall scents like pumpkin, apple, or warm vanilla.
  • Dried potpourri – Place in bowls or sachets for a subtle, long lasting scent. You can make your own using my recipe.
  • Freshly Baked Goods – Nothing beats the natural aroma of pies, breads, or cookies straight from the oven.

Add Sentimental Pieces

Sometimes the coziest fall decor isn’t found in a store or pulled from a storage bin…it’s tucked away in the things you already treasure.

It’s the pieces tied to memories that give your home character and make it truly one-of-a-kind.

It could be a quilt that’s been passed down in your family, a photo from a favorite autumn outing, or a handmade craft from years past.

These sentimental touches remind you of the people and moments that matter most, and they make your space feel layered with love and history.

DIY Fall Flower Arrangements

It’s a amazing how a vase of flowers lifts the mood of a room, and in the fall, arrangements take on a whole new character.

The colors get richer, the textures more layered, and the beauty feels a little more rustic and wild.

Even the simplest bouquet of seasonal stems can bring that unmistakable autumn charm indoors.

What I love most is how accessible fall arrangements can be.

Maybe it’s a handful of blooms clipped from your garden, branches collected on a walk, or dried stems you’ve saved from summer.

They don’t need to be formal or fussy.

The imperfect, “gathered from nature” look is what makes fall flowers so special.

  • Dried Hydrangea Blossoms
  • Branches With Colorful Fall Leaves
  • Seeded Eucalyptus or Other Fragrant Greenery
  • Wildflowers Like Goldenrod or Asters
  • Ornamental Grasses for Texture and Movement
  • Branches With Berries for a Pop of Color

If You Can DIY it…Do it!

If you see something you love in a store or online, pause before adding it to your cart and ask yourself, “Could I make a version of this with what I already have at home?”

More often than not, the answer is yes!

And the beauty of doing it yourself is that you’ll end up with something unique, tailored to your style, and filled with a little bit of your own creativity.

DIY doesn’t have to mean complicated or perfect.

It can be as simple as repurposing a jar into a vase, crafting a candle ring from things in your yard, or printing out artwork to slip into a frame.

Those handmade touches are often the ones that stand out the most because they carry a sense of thoughtfulness that store-bought decor just can’t replicate.

Fall Baking and Cooking

We talked earlier about how your sense of smell is an important part of a cozy fall home, and that includes your sense of taste too.

Free fall decor ideas in the kitchen with an apple pie on the kitchen counter and bowl of apples.

Few things feel more comforting than enjoying flavors that are tied to the season like warm apple desserts, pumpkin spiced everything, hearty soups, and breads fresh from the oven.

These little moments in the kitchen do more than feed your family, they create memories and fill your home with the kind of coziness that no candle or blanket can match.

And…the food you prepare can become a part of your seasonal decor.

A loaf of bread cooling on the counter, a pie waiting on the windowsill, or even a pot of chili simmering away on the stove all contribute to the autumn atmosphere.

It’s practical, delicious, and one of the simplest ways to celebrate the season without spending a dime.
