Neutral Christmas Decor Ideas for Cozy Holiday Decorating
Come on over for our 2023 Christmas home tour, a virtual open house featuring inspirational neutral Christmas decor ideas. Let’s embrace festive simplicity and warmth this holiday season!

It’s my favorite time of year, and this is one of my favorite blog posts to write each Christmas season!
I love that I get to open our doors to you in a virtual open house, so you can get a look at our home styled for the holidays.
It’s always fun to get a sneak peek into someone else’s home to see how they’ve decorated it for the holidays. I’m one of those people that likes to look inside homes as we drive by them at night coming home from dinner or Christmas shopping to see what magical scenes unfold behind the glowing windows.
Is that weird…does anyone else do that?!
There’s something magical about the glow of lights and the inviting ambiance that instantly makes any home feel cozy & warm during the holidays.
Our Christmas home tour this year just might be my favorite. I’ve realized a holiday home is not just about the decorations. It’s about the memories we create and the joy we share.

As you virtually stroll through our home; envision laughter around the Christmas tree, the aroma of holiday baking coming from the kitchen, and cozy moments spent on the couch with Christmas movies playing on the tv.
I’ve poured my love for this season into our home, hoping to inspire your own festive creativity. Whether you’re a fellow decor enthusiast or just looking for ideas to make your home feel extra special this Christmas, I hope this blog post gives you loads of ideas!
Let’s get into the Christmas spirit…

Neutral Christmas Style
This year, I’ve chosen to embrace natural simplicity as the basis for our Christmas decorating.
The focus is on creating a cozy, inviting atmosphere with neutral colors and elements inspired by the beauty of nature.
You’ll find in our home, a blend of warm whites and creams that bring a sense of comfort & tranquility. Along with some faux & fresh greenery with the subtle charm of gold accents.

Every detail has been curated to enhance the natural beauty of the season.
It’s an aesthetic that captures the essence of winter without sacrificing the warmth that makes this, the most wonderful time of the year.
Neutral Christmas Decorations in the Entryway
Let’s get this cozy Christmas tour started with our entryway…

Our entryway is tiny. It’s just big enough for someone to come in and take their shoes and coat off, so the decor here has to be simple in order for this space to be functional.
Luckily, I have a shelf above the coat hooks that I get to play around with.
To keep with a neutral color palette of our Christmas decor I added just a couple of natural pieces here.
I’ve had these two baskets for years, and had a vision of them hanging here in our entryway. So, Mr. ERH hung them with command strips (which have become my best friends) to not ruin the wallpaper in our entryway.

I then added a little faux greenery inside each basket for a little texture and pop of color.
I’ve been obsessed with bottle brush trees this season, so naturally I placed a few of those on the shelf and a one inside the larger basket for a little whimsy.
pro Tip
- Nestle a few of your bottle brush trees inside of tea cups, allowing the bristles to spill over the edges. This not only gives your bottle brush trees a stylish makeover but also adds a touch of nostalgia when you use a vintage tea cup or one that has special meaning to you.

We also hung decorative snow shoes on the beadboard to which I added a fresh greenery and my favorite stripped ribbon that I’ve used throughout our home this Christmas season.

I hung this floral framed artwork to the opposite wall of the shelf and hooks. It’s not necessarily a Christmas print, but I loved how the gold frame popped against the wallpaper for the holidays.

Our entryway opens right into the kitchen, so let’s head there next!

Neutral Holiday Decor Ideas in the Kitchen
Those of you who have been here for a while know the kitchen is where I spend most of time when I’m at home, which means it’s my favorite place to decorate.

I always start decorating our kitchen for any season by updating the decor pieces on our open kitchen shelf first.
Our entire first floor is open, so our kitchen shelf sets the tone for not only the kitchen decor but the whole downstairs.

When I received this faux hemlock garland with pine cones in the mail, I knew it needed to be the focal point of our kitchen shelf.
It’s one of the most realistic faux garlands I’ve ever owned and was perfect for our simple, natural, neutral Christmas decor.

To the shelf with the garland, I added a vintage ironstone pitcher filled with wooden kitchen utensils, and a group of taper candle holders with these LED candles.
pro Tip
- Whether arranging candles, vases, or any group of items; opt for sets of three or five for an aesthetically pleasing and visually captivating display. The balance of odd numbered arrangements adds depth and intrigue.
Above the green garland we hung a basket with a plate inside. Then, I finished that with the same green striped ribbon from our entryway.
On the hanging pegs below the shelf I hung seasonal kitchen towels and one of my favorite purchases this year, a white Santa pitcher.

The little tree on the kitchen counter adds another pop of green and I think the wicker basket is so cute and cozy!

I also purchased these white Santa mugs which I placed on a vintage scale on the console table we have in our kitchen.

For a little more festive cheer in the kitchen, I added small evergreen wreaths to the backs of our kitchen counter stools.
This was a Christmas decoration I tried last year and absolutely loved it. It was a no-brainer to add them to our kitchen chairs again!

The area behind our kitchen stove also received some holiday spirit with a small evergreen wreath and a green plaid flour sack towel.

Don’t forget to decorate your refrigerator too!
I made DIY vintage plate magnets for the side of our fridge and hung a sheet of Christmas music for a festive touch.

Now, let’s continue the tour into the living room!

Christmas Living Room Tour
Of course the focus in our living room is the Christmas tree!

Last year, we had a flocked Christmas tree in our living room.
This year, I wanted to take a simpler approach when it came to our family Christmas tree.

We put up this faux noble fir Christmas tree and I absolutely love it! It’s simple with lots of room for ornaments between the branches.

I decided to keep the ornaments on the tree minimal with a few battery operated candles sprinkled throughout, and of course Christmas ribbon.

You may have noticed the curtains behind the Christmas tree. Can you believe I made those out of tablecloths?!
I always have such a hard time finding curtains I love that don’t cost a fortune. Making my own is not only a great way to save money but I’m able to achieve the exact look I want.

Our built-in bookshelves are always a focal point in our family room. But in all honesty, I didn’t do much with them for the holidays.
I simply hung a wreath on the section of bookshelves between the window seats, then added a few candles & greenery to the top shelf on either end of the built-ins.

I like to keep the focus of the bookshelves on the books, so less is always more when it comes to decorating our living room shelves.
A cozy living room for the holidays would not be complete without throw pillows and throw blankets!
pro Tip
- Invest in pillow covers or throw pillows that you can easily remove the pillow cover. Pillow covers are a cost effective and storage friendly solution. It’s a simple way to switch up the look of your living space without the need for storing the entire pillow. Also, pillow covers are easy to remove and wash providing a practical solution for keeping your decor fresh & inviting.
These soft accents not only enhance the comfort of the living room but also provide an opportunity to introduce textures and colors which is so important for a cozy holiday feel in a neutral home.

Opt for a neutral palette like greens, tans, and creams. And different textures like boucle, chunky knits, sherpa, and wool to infuse your space with coziness and warmth for the winter season.
