Is your kitchen feeling a little boring or looking a little drab?

I might just have the answer for you…citrus fruit.

Lemons, limes, oranges, and grapefruits are not just delicious and refreshing to eat, but their vibrant colors can easily transform the heart of the home into a warm, uplifting space.

Now, if you’re like me and are not a big “themed” decor person, don’t worry.

This blog post is not about adding citrus or lemon decor to every aspect of your kitchen.

The reality is you don’t need to go overboard with citrus motifs to achieve a bright and cheerful kitchen. In fact, I find less is more as a good guiding principle.

During the warmer months of the year, I like to subtly incorporate citrusy elements in various ways that complements the existing decor in our home because it feels cozy, yet fresh.

There are simple and easy ways to give your kitchen a fresh look using citrus like lemon-scented candles, a decorative bowl of fresh fruit, or citrus themed dish towels

Let’s explore some other ideas to easily freshen up your kitchen using citrus fruit!

Citrus & Lemon Kitchen Decor Ideas

I’m a big proponent of functional decor, especially when it comes to the kitchen.

In my opinion, why settle for purely decorative items when you can blend style with utility?

That’s where I think citrus-themed decor really shines. Every element serves a dual purpose; to beautify the space and enhance its functionality whether it’s a bowl of lemons or a citrus themed tea towel.

Display Fruit Bowls & Baskets on Your Kitchen Countertop

Let’s start with one of the simplest yet most effective ways to introduce citrus decor into your kitchen, displaying fruit bowls and baskets on your kitchen countertop.

Not only are these vessels practical for storing your favorite fruits, but they also double as centerpieces that add a pop of color to your counter, kitchen table or dining table.

I love the rustic touch this wicker basket adds to our kitchen but you can also use a wire basket or a ceramic bowl that complements your kitchen’s color scheme to hold & store fruit.

Fruit bowls and baskets are a great way to keep your produce fresh and easily accessible, and they’ll serve as a reminder to incorporate healthy, vitamin rich citrus into your diet.

If you’re not a fan of storing fresh citrus on your kitchen counter (Mr. ERH loves to keep his oranges cold in the fridge), you can still achieve the look by using faux fruit.

Great-looking fake lemons, limes, and oranges can be arranged in a bowl or basket just like the real thing, without the worry of spoiling fruit.

Here’s a few tips & tricks for displaying citrus fruit on the counter or on a table…

  • Mix and match different types of citrus fruits to create a vibrant display.
  • Experiment with varying heights by placing some fruits directly on the countertop and elevating others on a tiered tray or in a decorative bowl with a pedestal.
  • Arrange citrus fruits in clusters or groups rather than scattering them randomly. Grouping fruits together creates a cohesive look instead of it looking like clutter.
  • Incorporate decorative elements such as fresh green leaves, flowers, or decorative accents like a woven placemat underneath the fruit bowl.
  • Rotate the real lemons regularly to ensure they stay fresh and visually appealing.

Burn Citrus Scented Candles for Ambiance & Aroma

Citrus decor doesn’t get much easier than lighting a citrus scented candle!

Lemon-scented candles create an inviting atmosphere in your home.

These candles not only make your kitchen feel cozy, but they also fill the air with the invigorating fragrance of lemons, limes, oranges, or grapefruits.

The other great thing about citrus scented candles in the kitchen is that they can help mask cooking odors that might linger.

Simmer a Lemon Infused Stovetop Potpourri

While I do love burning candles, sometimes I like to freshen the air in our home with a lemon infused simmer pot.

To create a simmer pot, start by slicing a couple of fresh lemons into thin rounds. Place the lemon slices in a pot and fill it with water until the yellow lemons are submerged.

Then, add a few sprigs of fresh rosemary or thyme for an extra aromatic boost.

Next, bring the water to a gentle simmer over low heat. As the water heats up, it will release the fragrant oils from the lemon and herbs, filling your kitchen with the most delicious fresh, citrusy scent.

You can customize your stovetop potpourri by adding other aromatic ingredients such as chamomile, cinnamon sticks, cloves, or even slices of ginger. Experiment with different combinations until you find the perfect scent for your home.

Once your potpourri is simmering away, let it continue to infuse your kitchen with its delightful aroma for as long as you like. Just remember to keep an eye on the water level and add more as needed to prevent it from drying out.

Incorporate Citrus Themed Linens Into Your Kitchen Decor

Kitchen linens are the ultimate in practical kitchen decor. They serve functional purposes but also offer an opportunity to inject personality and style into your space.

However, you do want to be careful when choosing a citrus theme linen.

While they can add a vibrancy to your kitchen, it’s important to strike a balance to avoid overwhelming your space with an abundance of lemon or orange prints.

Start by selecting linens in citrus-inspired colors like soft yellows or greens. These colors will brighten your kitchen and create a cheerful aesthetic.

Pro Tip: Avoid overwhelming your kitchen with too many citrus motifs by mixing them with neutral colors and patterns or using them as accent pieces rather than the main focal point.

Incorporate lemon motifs in subtle ways, such as through small prints or embroidered details, rather than choosing large, bold patterns that may dominate the space.

When it comes to specific linens, think beyond just tea towels and consider other options like tablecloths, placemats, and oven mitts

Mix and match different citrus-themed linens to add depth and visual interest to your decor. This will help keep your kitchen’s decor from looking too “citrusy”.
