It might seem too early to be thinking about Christmas, BUT October is the month that I begin to hunker down and prepare.

For me, starting early means less stress and more time to truly enjoy the holiday season.

Instead of scrambling at the last minute to get everything done, I like to break everything down into smaller tasks, making the lead up to Christmas feel just a little bit more relaxed and intentional.

By getting a head start, I can take my time planning a budget, stocking up on supplies, and thinking through how I want to decorate.

Plus, early preparation gives me the chance to actually enjoy the little things that make the holidays special, like cozy movie nights, baking Christmas cookies, or spending time with family.

When the holiday season arrives, everything feels more effortless, and I can truly appreciate the magic of Christmas.

If you’re looking to make your holidays less stressful and more enjoyable, here are 15 easy steps to prepare your home for the most wonderful time of the year.

When should you start preparing for Christmas?

When it comes to the time in which you should begin preparing for Christmas, there’s no right answer.

Some people thrive on the last-minute hustle, while others prefer to plan well in advance. Think Christmas in July.

Personally, I’ve found that October is the perfect time to start preparing. It gives me the breathing room to get organized, enjoy the process, and avoid the holiday rush.

By starting early, you can plan your budget, make a list of supplies, and begin thinking about your decor at a more leisurely pace.

Early preparation allows you to spread out tasks over several weeks, so you’re not overwhelmed by trying to do everything at once during the holidays.

That said, the best time to start preparing for Christmas really depends on your schedule and how you like to approach the season.

If you’re someone who loves the idea of a relaxed holiday season filled with cozy moments, preparing ahead of time can make all the difference.

But even if you’re more of a November starter, or even a December planner, the key is to find a balance that works for you.

How to Get Your Home Ready for Christmas

By preparing your home for the holidays ahead of time, you can enjoy the warmth, togetherness, and festive spirit of the season without the added stress.

Here’s a step by step guide to help you get ready…

Plan a Budget

This is probably the most important step when it comes to planning ahead, establishing a budget.

Determine how much you want to spend on decorations, gifts, food, and activities, and break it down into categories to keep everything organized.

This helps prevent overspending and ensures that you can enjoy the season without financial stress or credit card debt.

Be realistic about what you can afford and prioritize the things that matter most to you.

Is that hosting a big holiday dinner, buying meaningful gifts, or creating a cozy, festive atmosphere in your home?

Sticking to a budget also allows you to look for sales and deals ahead of time, so you can shop smart and save where possible.

Once your budget is set, track your spending throughout the season to avoid any surprises.

10 Tips & Tricks for Holiday Budgeting

  • Set a Realistic Budget: Be honest about what you can afford to spend.
  • Create a Gift List Early: Make a list of everyone you plan to give gifts to, and set a spending limit for each person.
  • Track Your Spending: Keep a record of everything you buy (spreadsheet, budgeting app, or writing it down). This will help you stay accountable and prevent overspending.
  • Take Advantage of Sales: Start shopping early and look for sales during major shopping events like Amazon Prime Big Deal Days, Black Friday, or Cyber Monday.
  • Use Cash Back or Rewards Points: If you have credit cards with rewards or points, consider using them for your holiday purchases. This can save you money or give you discounts on future purchases.
  • DIY It: Save on decorations and gifts by making them yourself (more about this in a few minutes).
  • Limit Spending: It’s easy to get caught up in buying fancy wrapping paper, cards, or expensive holiday decorations. Limit non-essential spending by reusing items from previous years or choosing less expensive alternatives.
  • Start a Holiday Fund: Think about starting a holiday savings fund in January. You can set aside a small amount each month, so by the time Christmas comes around, you have a dedicated fund to draw from.
  • Secret Santa or Gift Exchanges: This is something we started with Mr. ERH’s family many years ago, and it’s been a god send! Gift exchanges allows everyone to give and receive a gift without the pressure of buying for every single person.
  • Plan Ahead for Next Year: Many stores offer deep discounts on holiday items right after Christmas. It’s a great time to stock up on Christmas decorations, holiday wrapping paper, and other essentials for the following year.

Stock Up on Supplies

Take stock of your current decorations and supplies before hitting the stores.

This will help you avoid buying duplicates and make sure you only purchase what you truly need.

Go through your holiday decor, gift wrap, and other seasonal essentials to see what’s in good condition and what might need to be replaced or replenished.

When stocking up, don’t forget about the less obvious supplies too like gift bags, tape, gift tags, and ribbon for gift giving.

If you plan on hosting holiday gatherings, stock up on paper goods, candles, and serving items you might need for entertaining.

By planning ahead you’ll be able to avoid the holiday rush and you won’t be scrambling to find those last minute items once December arrives.

Plus you’ll be able to take advantage of sales, which means you’ll get the best deals on everything from ornaments to lights.

Declutter Your Living Room

Our living room is where we place our Christmas tree, so this room, out of all the rooms in our home, gets the most attention during the holiday season.

With the tree and other Christmas decorations, it’s easy for this space to feel cluttered if it isn’t tidied up beforehand.

So before the decorations come out, take some time to declutter and simplify your living room.

I like to start by removing any non-essential items that won’t contribute to the holiday aesthetic.

Clear off surfaces like coffee tables, shelves, and mantels to make room for seasonal decorations.

You may also want to temporarily store everyday decor to avoid overcrowding your space.

The goal is to make your living room feel cozy and festive, while still being functional and clutter-free for the Christmas season.

Choose a Color Scheme for Your Christmas Decorations

One of the easiest ways to create a cohesive look for your holiday decor is by choosing a color scheme.

Selecting a specific palette for your Christmas decorations can help tie everything together.

It doesn’t matter if you prefer traditional reds and greens, classic metallics, or a more neutral palette, having a color palette will give your home a unified, festive feel.

Neutral Christmas decorations in the living room for cozy holiday decor.

To start, consider the overall style you want to create in your home.

  • Do you want the classic look of Christmas with vibrant colors like reds, golds, and greens?
  • Maybe you like a winter wonderland vibe with whites, silvers, and cool blues?
  • Or do you love rustic decor with neutral colors like cream, beige, and natural elements with pops of greenery?

Once you’ve chosen your colors, apply the scheme consistently across your home.

Use it for your Christmas tree ornaments, garlands, wreaths, throw pillows, and even your gift wrap.

Incorporating your color palette into small details elevates your holiday decor and make your home feel thoughtfully put together.

But here’s the thing I want you to remember…even if you already have a collection of Christmas decorations, don’t feel like you need to start from scratch.

You can work with what you have by mixing and matching pieces within your chosen scheme or adding a few new items to refresh the look to reflect your personal style.

Decorate Strategically

My philosophy when it comes to decorating our home for Christmas or any season for that matter is, less is more.

Instead of filling every corner of your home with Christmas decor, focus on decorating strategically to create a balanced and inviting atmosphere.

Careful placement of your decorations can help highlight key areas of your home without making it feel overcrowded or chaotic.

Start by identifying the main focal points of your home, places where decorations will have the biggest impact.

Focal Points to Think About When Holiday Decorating

  • Living Room: Make your Christmas tree the centerpiece of the room. Arrange other decorations like stockings, garlands, or throw pillows to complement the tree.
  • Entryway: Use a festive wreath on the door to welcome guests. Create a small display on a console table with seasonal decor, like a few candles or a decorative wooden dough bowl filled with ornaments or pine cones.
  • Kitchen: Incorporate holiday tea towels, a festive tablecloth, or a centerpiece with seasonal fruits and greens. Display holiday decor on countertops or shelves.
  • Dining Room: Use statement pieces such as a table runner or a centerpiece to add holiday decor without cluttering the table. Think about adding seasonal plates or festive place settings.
  • Bedrooms: All you need are a couple of subtle touches like a cozy blanket or a small tree with twinkle lights to create a cozy holiday atmosphere.
  • Bathrooms: Hang seasonal hand towels and add a small arrangement of greenery or a holiday candle to the counter.

Distributing decorations evenly throughout your home will give you a cohesive look without cluttering any one area.

Above all, functionality is key.

Your decorations should enhance the space while still allowing for everyday use and comfort.

How can I decorate my home without feeling overwhelmed?

Focus on one area at a time and choose a color scheme that ties everything together. Start with your most used rooms and decorate strategically to avoid clutter. Incorporating simple, meaningful decor rather than overloading your space will help keep your home feeling cozy.

Send Christmas Cards Early

There’s no reason why you can’t get a head start on your Christmas cards before December!

Stuff the envelopes, address and stamp them in advance so you can easily drop them in the mail once the holiday season begins.

PRO TIP: Many printing companies (Tiny Prints is one of my favorites) offer services where you can select or customize your holiday cards, and for a little extra fee, they will handle printing, addressing, and mailing directly to your recipients. This means you can enjoy beautifully designed cards without the stress of writing addresses or making trips to the post office.

Set the Mood With Scents

One of the most powerful ways to create a cozy, festive atmosphere in your home during the holidays is through scent.

The right fragrances can instantly evoke the warmth and joy of the season, making your home feel inviting and comforting.

The smell of fresh pine, orange, cinnamon, or baking cookies have a unique way of setting the mood and enhancing your home decor.

One of my favorite ways to get our home smelling like Christmas is by simmering a holiday simmer pot with seasonal ingredients like oranges, cinnamon sticks, and star anise on the stove.

Another great option is lighting candles with seasonal fragrances like pine, vanilla, or spiced apple.

I like to place them in areas around our home, such as the living room, kitchen, and entryway, so that every corner smells like Christmas.

And don’t underestimate the power of baking!

The scent of freshly baked cookies is another great way to fill your home with festive aromas.

From gingerbread to sugar cookies, the smell of something sweet coming out of the oven adds warmth and nostalgia to the holiday season.

Homemade Christmas Gifts

If you plan on gifting homemade Christmas gifts, this is one thing you can easily check off your list well ahead of December!

Making personalized gifts allows you to infuse your love and creativity into each creation, making them extra special for your friends and family.

Make a Wrapping Station

Creating a designated wrapping station is a great way to streamline the gift wrapping process.

When you have everything organized in one spot, you’ll save yourself time and hassle.

Start by selecting a spot in your home, such as a spare room, a corner of your living room, or even a large table.

You want to make sure the spot you choose has enough room for you to spread out your supplies comfortably.

Next, gather all your wrapping supplies…

  • Wrapping Paper: Stock up on 3-5 coordinating designs and colors.
  • Gift Bags: These are great for oddly shaped gifts or when you need to wrap something quickly.
  • Tissue Paper: To fill gift bags or boxes.
  • Tape and Scissors: Keep a reliable tape dispenser and a good pair of sharp scissors within reach.
  • Ribbons and Bows: These embellishments will elevate your gifts and give them that “wow” factor.
  • Tags or Labels: Pre-printed tags or blank ones you can personalize help identify the gift recipient easily.

I personally love to wrap gifts, but I do know that I’m in the minority!

So, if gift wrapping is not your favorite activity, try playing some holiday music on the radio or turn a holiday movie on the tv while you work, to make the process more enjoyable.

You’ll be surprised at how this can turn the task into a relaxing activity, while also helping you get into the holiday spirit.

Wrap Gifts as You Buy Them

One of the simplest and most effective strategies for managing holiday gifts is to wrap them when you bring them home.

I find that this approach reduces stress and the overwhelming task of wrapping all the presents in one sitting.

Instead, you can tackle it gradually, making it feel more manageable and less daunting.

It’s easy to misplace or forget about gifts hidden away in closets or under beds, but wrapping them right away keeps them visible and ensures you remember what you’ve purchased.

Stock the Pantry

As the holiday season approaches, it’s important to do a quick audit of your pantry and make sure it’s stocked with the essential items that will help you prepare for gatherings, baking, and holiday meals.

By taking the time to organize and stock your pantry ahead of time, you’ll save yourself stress and trips to the grocery store.

Glass jars with ironstone scoops on kitchen countertops for baking and cooking.

Assess what you currently have on hand. Check expiration dates and dispose of any expired items, making space for new supplies.

Next, create a list of pantry staples that you frequently use during the holidays which might look something like this…

  • Flour
  • Sugar
  • Baking Powder
  • Baking Soda
  • Chocolate Chips
  • Cinnamon
  • Nutmeg
  • Nuts
  • Chicken/Beef/Vegetable Stock
  • Marinara Sauce
  • Jam & Jelly
  • Canned Vegetables
  • Rice
  • Pasta
  • Beans
  • Vegetable Oil
  • Olive Oil

Organize your pantry by grouping similar items together and placing frequently used items at eye level for easy access.

Clear containers or labeled bins can help keep things organized and visible, making it easier to find what you need when you’re in a rush.

Get Your Holiday Baking Done Ahead of Time

The holidays just aren’t the holidays without delicious sweet treats…right?!

Christmas cookies, I’m looking at you!

One of the best ways to ensure that you can enjoy all the holiday flavors without the stress of baking during the busiest time of the year, is to prepare your treats ahead of time and freeze them.

Start by selecting which recipes you want to make for the holidays.

It could be traditional gingerbread cookies, chocolate fudge, or a classic pumpkin pie. By compiling a list of things you want to make, it will help you stay organized.

Once you’ve gathered your recipes, set aside dedicated baking days.

This allows you to streamline the process and take advantage of the time you’ll be spending in the kitchen.

After baking, allow your treats to cool completely before freezing.

Properly packaging your baked goods is key to maintaining their freshness and flavor.

Use airtight containers or resealable freezer bags, and label them with the name of the treat and the date it was made. This helps you keep track of what you have on hand.

When you’re ready to enjoy or gift your treats, simply thaw them in the refrigerator or at room temperature, and they’ll be just as delicious as the day they were baked.

Plan for Hosting

Hosting during the holiday season can be one of the most rewarding experiences however, it can also be stressful if you’re not prepared.

Start by deciding on the type of event you want to host like an intimate dinner party, a festive brunch, or a larger holiday celebration.

Once you have your vision in mind, create a guest list to determine how many people you’ll be accommodating.

This will help you plan the space, seating arrangements, and food quantities.

Then, set a date and time for your gathering.

Be sure to communicate this with your guests well in advance so they can mark their calendars.

Holiday entertaining and Christmas parties are a great way to gather with friends and family for the holidays.

Once you have a date, you can begin to plan the menu.

Consider dishes that can be prepared ahead of time, such as casseroles, desserts, or appetizers, to ease your workload on the day of your Christmas party.

Next, think about your table setting and decor.

Planning your holiday table in advance allows you to use items you already have on hand.

You can incorporate festive elements such as candles, greenery, and holiday themed dinnerware to create a cozy atmosphere.

If you have specific decorations you want to use, prepare them ahead of time.

Don’t forget about entertainment!

Planning activities or games can keep your guests engaged and add an element of fun to your gathering. Holiday trivia, a cozy movie marathon, or a fun gift exchange are a couple of ideas that everyone will love.

PRO TIP: Create a checklist to keep yourself organized in the days leading up to the event. Include tasks like grocery shopping, cleaning the house, setting up the decor, and preparing dishes. Breaking it down into manageable steps will help you stay on track and make the process feel less overwhelming.

Schedule Out Holiday Activities

Christmastime is filled with excitement and joy, but it’s also a season that’s packed with activities.

To fully enjoy the most wonderful time of the year, it’s essential to plan out your holiday activities ahead of time.

By organizing your schedule, you can ensure that you don’t miss out on traditions (many fun activities have a tendency to sell out during the holidays) while also avoiding the last minute rush.

Start by making a list of your must-do holiday activities.

This might include attending local holiday events, visiting a Christmas tree farm, creating a hot chocolate bar, or hosting family gatherings.

Consider your family’s traditions and what activities bring your family joy. Prioritize these activities so you can focus on the most meaningful ones and allocate time for them in your calendar.

Once you have your list, create a holiday calendar.

Include important dates such as parties, family visits, and any personal traditions you want to continue.

By visualizing your schedule, you can see how much time you have available for spur of the moment activities or last minute get-togethers that may arise.

Don’t forget to involve your family in the planning process!

Discuss your holiday activity list with them and invite input on what they’d like to do.

That way everyone feels included and excited about the season, making it easier to coordinate schedules and share responsibilities.

Finally, allow for flexibility in your plans.

The holiday season can be unpredictable, and sometimes plans may need to change.

By keeping a flexible mindset and being open to adjustments, you can fully embrace the season while still enjoying the activities you’ve planned.

Set Aside Time to Enjoy The Christmas Season

To end this blog post I think it’s important to point out that amidst the hustle and bustle of holiday preparations, don’t forget to carve out time to simply enjoy the season.

With all the planning, decorating, and shopping, it can be easy to lose sight of the true spirit of Christmas.

Setting aside intentional moments for relaxation and celebration is key to experiencing the magic of the holidays.

Simple activities like a cozy night in with loved ones, watching your favorite holiday movies, or participating in festive traditions are what make the season special.

Also, don’t hesitate or feel guilty about taking breaks.

Allow yourself some downtime to recharge. Enjoy a cup of hot cocoa by the fire, take a walk to admire the holiday decorations in your neighborhood, or curl up with a good book for the afternoon.

These moments of peace can help you feel grounded and remind you of what the season is all about.

Embrace the imperfections of the holiday season, and focus on the laughter and joy shared with loved ones.
